Test-Taking Tips• Go to bed early the night before the test. You will think more clearly

after a good night's rest.

• Read each problem carefully and think about ways to solve theproblem before you try to answer the question.

• Relax. Most people get nervous when taking a test. It's natural. Justdo your best.

• Answer questions you are sure about first. If you do not know theanswer to a question, skip it and go back to that question later.

• Think positively. Some problems may seem hard to you, but you maybe able to figure out what to do if you read each question carefully.

• If no figure is provided, draw one. If one is furnished, mark it up tohelp you solve the problem.

• When you have finished each problem, reread it to make sure youranswer is reasonable.

• Become familiar with a variety of formulas and when they shouldbe used.

• Make sure that the number of the question on the answer sheetmatches the number of the question on which you are working inyour test booklet.

Overview

The material in this booklet is designed to help you prepare for the North Carolina Algebra 1 End-of-Course Test (EOC).

It contains:

• a Student Recording Chart,

• the competency goals tested on the EOC,

• a Diagnostic Test,

• practice for each competency goal, and

• two Sample Tests.

How to Use This Book

Diagnostic Test This test will help you identify any weaknesses youmay have as you prepare to take the EOC. Once you’ve taken the test andit’s been graded, complete the Student Recording Chart that is found onpage iv. Mark an × in the square for each question that you answeredincorrectly.

Individual Practice You can use each student’s chart to determine whereextra practice is needed. Assign each student the appropriate StandardsPractice worksheet(s) from pages 17 to 64 in the Student Workbook.

Practice If you missed one or two of the questions for a particularcompetency goal, you could probably use some extra practice with thatgoal. The Student Recording Chart lists practice pages for eachcompetency goal. Complete the appropriate practice pages. If you areunsure about how to do some of the problems, you may want to refer toyour mathematics book.

Sample Tests After you have completed your practice worksheet(s),take the Sample Tests on pages 65 to 96.

14 A swim team is selling posters of rhododendron and other Appalachianwildflowers to raise funds. The scatter plot shows sales for the past 10 days. Which conclusion most accurately reflects the data?A The data show a strong negative

correlation, which means sales are rapidly declining at a predictable rate the longer the sale.

B A modest negative correlation indicates that fewer posters are beingsold as the sale continues, but it is difficult to predict the sales forany particular day.

C The line of best fit shows a decrease in sales of about 2.5 posters per day.
