Vision Statement

Incarnation Parish is a Roman Catholic community centered around the Lord Jesus, a living sign of hope to all that the Word made flesh dwells among us. His presence and love is encountered in all areas of our life together, especially in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in Sacred Scripture and in the Sacraments. We seek to make the Lord's presence and love known through service and edu-cation, through evangelization and through con-tinual conversion and renewal in Him. We entrust our life together and our sharing in the mission of Christ to the protection and intercession of Mary, Mother of the Lord and our Mother.

Tithe & Collections

We encourage all parishioners to try as best as possible to keep their weekly commitment. Those who are not di-

rectly effected financially by these circumstances are in-vited to consider increasing their offering.

Offerings may be mailed to the parish office or dropped through the mail slot of the front door

of the parish office. Thank you for your tremendous generosity.

“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!

From the Pastor’s Pen

On “Low Sunday” I was feeling rather low myself as sometimes the Sunday after Easter is called. The term Low Sunday developed from the reality that the celebration of the Sunday after Easter is nothing at all like the celebrations on Easter Sunday. I was feeling low because it seemed at the time that there has been little difference between Sundays and Weekdays, Lent and Easter, Feast Days or not. It would be silly if not hazardous to pretend that this period is taxing on everyone to varying degrees. This is the reality. This is our reality. After participating on the TV in several of the Divine Mercy observations I went online and ordered some face masks. Just a few cloth ones to have so that I can comply with the governor’s recent executive order. Medical officials also said that mask use might become part of the “new normal.” As I placed that I order I began to think about what the “new Normal” might be. As a student in Rome I flew a lot during those years and I can tell those who are not aware but air travel was a lot easier before September 11, 2001. The current or new procedures were implemented because of the need for greater safety. But it is significantly more extensive and different on many levels “The New Normal.” I expect that there will be new customs at Mass and other gatherings when we return to the Altar and Parish Life in general. While I will wait for the civil and ecclesial authorities to tell us more precisely in the future, I can put 2 and 2 together and think what some of those possibilities on my own. It will be something that we will all learn and adopt together. Together is exactly what we are all yearning for. Together is the very essence of the Church. The word “Church” comes from first the Greek and then the Latin words for “Gathering.” Remember the Church is not a building but a People. We the Church use churches to gather. Those of you who have been parishioners for decades here might recall when Mass was celebrated in the lower church or even in the school auditorium. The point is that being together even if it is a little different, a little safer is still better than being apart. Mindful that we will be together again is how I was able to raise my spirits on Low Sunday. To be quite honest anticipating gathering with you all around the Altar in our country church. Jesus did not offer the gift of Resurrection only to His Mother, or to Peter and the Apostles. Jesus offered Resurrection to all His followers who believe in Him and who gather together on Sunday, the day of His resurrection. Thus we look for that new day when we will join together again. The new day, the new normal—the constant Mystery and Message.

Below is a copy of the Angelus. Even though the Regina Caeli replaces it during Eastertide it still might be a prayer that we say as the People from Incarnation no matter where we find ourselves over these coming days and weeks.

The Angelus

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived by the Holy Spirit. Hail, Mary . . .

V. Behold, the handmaid of the Lord. R. Let it be done to me according to your word. Hail, Mary . . .

V. And the Word became Flesh. R. And dwelled among us. Hail, Mary . . .

V. Pray for us O holy Mother of God R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts; that as we have known the Incarnation of Christ your Son by the message of an angel, so by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of the Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

If ever there was an “Official Prayer of Incarnation Parish” the Angelus would surely be it. Prayed morning, noon and night by lay people, it sanctifies the day by recalling the Incarnation just as the monks and nuns did by singing the psalms in chapel. The custom of stopping and praying the Angelus began in the 1300s. Town folk would pause three times a day when the church bell tolled sanctifying all that was done by remembering the Incarnation. Our chimes ring each day at 8AM, Noon and 6PM. I hope if you hear them you will continue the practice of pausing in prayer. There certainly is plenty to pray about these days and it is important to remember each other no matter where we find ourselves. Wishing everyone a Blessed Easter! May the Power and the Peace of the Risen One Prevail in Our Hearts and in Our World. God Bless! The Lord is Risen. It is true! He has appeared to Simon!

LIVING LIGHTS. Securing an Annual Living Light Vo-tive Candle to Honor a Loved One, Remember a Special Intention, or Mark a Milestone is a contin-ual and wonderful way to celebrate sentiments and offer intercessions of remembrance, hope and grat-itude. Two wall mounted electric candle stands now hang in our church on either side of the newly

restored and expanded Saints’ Shrine. These unique and inviting candles are made of real wax with electrified illu-mination to insure your Living Light burns brightly throughout the year. A plaque displaying the name of your loved one, your intention, or your milestone will be mounted before your Living Light Votive Candle. Plaques will remain for the year you have secured your Living Light and may be renewed or rededicated for additional 12 month periods. In addition to its rightful place before your Living Light in the Saints’ Shrine, your Loved One, Special Intention, or Milestone will also be included in the Living Light Section of the Parish Website. See the blue brochure by the church doors or contact the rectory for more info: 718-465-8534.

The Shepherd Speaks

The Risen Shepherd goes in search of all those lost in the labyrinths of loneliness and margin-alization. He comes to meet them through our brothers and sisters who treat them with respect and kind-ness, and help them to hear his voice, an unforgettable voice, a voice calling them back to friendship with God. - Urbe et Orbi (Message to the City

and to the World) Easter Sunday April 16, 2017 St. Peter’s Square

Prayer during a Pandemic May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our chil-dren when their schools close remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips remem-ber those that have no place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. During this time when we cannot physical-ly wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen

HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS

Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia Second Sunday of Easter, 19 April 2020

Last Sunday we celebrated the Lord’s resurrection; today we witness the resurrection of his disciple. It has already been a week, a week since the disciples had seen the Risen Lord, but in spite of this, they remained fearful, cringing behind “closed doors” (Jn 20:26), unable even to convince Thomas, the only one absent, of the resurrection. What does Jesus do in the face of this timorous lack of belief? He returns and, standing in the same place, “in the midst” of the disciples, he repeats his greeting: “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:19, 26). He starts all over. The resurrection of his disciple begins here, from this faithful and patient mercy, from the discovery that God never tires of reaching out to lift us up when we fall. He wants us to see him, not as a taskmaster with whom we have to settle accounts, but as our Father who always raises us up. In life we go forward tentatively, uncertainly, like a toddler who takes a few steps and falls; a few steps more and falls again, yet each time his father puts him back on his feet. The hand that always puts us back on our feet is mercy: God knows that without mercy we will remain on the ground, that in order to keep walking, we need to be put back on our feet. You may object: “But I keep falling!”. The Lord knows this and he is always ready to raise you up. He does not want us to keep thinking about our failings; rather, he wants us to look to him. For when we fall, he sees children needing to be put back on their feet; in our fail-ings he sees children in need of his merciful love. Today, in this church that has become a shrine of mercy in Rome, and on this Sunday that Saint John Paul II dedicated to Divine Mercy twenty years ago, we con-fidently welcome this message. Jesus said to Saint Faustina: “I am love and mercy itself; there is no human misery that could measure up to my mercy” (Diary, 14 September 1937). At one time, the Saint, with satis-faction, told Jesus that she had offered him all of her life and all that she had. But Jesus’ answer stunned her: “You have not offered me the thing is truly yours”. What had that holy nun kept for herself? Jesus said to her with kindness: “My daughter, give me your failings” (10 October 1937). We too can ask ourselves: “Have I given my failings to the Lord? Have I let him see me fall so that he can raise me up?” Or is there something I still keep inside me? A sin, a regret from the past, a wound that I have inside, a grudge against someone, an idea about a particular person… The Lord waits for us to offer him our failings so that he can help us experience his mercy. Let us go back to the disciples. They had abandoned the Lord at his Passion and felt guilty. But meeting them, Jesus did not give a long sermon. To them, who were wounded within, he shows his own wounds. Thomas can now touch them and know of Jesus’ love and how much Jesus had suffered for him, even though he had abandoned him. In those wounds, he touches with his hands God’s tender closeness. Thomas ar-rived late, but once he received mercy, he overtook the other disciples: he believed not only in the resurrection, but in the boundless love of God. And he makes the most simple and beautiful profession of faith: “My Lord and my God!” (v. 28). Here is the resurrection of the disciple: it is accomplished when his frail and wounded humanity enters into that of Jesus. There, every doubt is resolved; there, God becomes my God; there, we begin to accept ourselves and to love life as it is. Dear brothers and sisters, in the time of trial that we are pres-ently undergoing, we too, like Thomas, with our fears and our doubts, have experienced our frailty. We need the Lord, who sees beyond that frailty an irrepressible beauty. With him we rediscover how precious we are even in our vulnerability. We discover that we are like beautiful crys-tals, fragile and at the same time precious. And if, like crystal, we are transparent before him, his light – the light of mercy – will shine in us and through us in the world. As the Letter of Peter said, this is a reason for being “filled with joy, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials” (1 Pt 1:6).

THE RESURRECTION OF

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST “The Lord is truly risen, alleluia!” According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1169… “Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the "Feast of feasts," the "Solemnity of solemnities," just as the Eucharist is the "Sacrament of sacraments" (the Great Sacrament). St. Athanasius calls Easter "the Great Sunday" and the Eastern Churches call Holy Week "the Great Week." The mystery of the resurrection in which Christ Jesus crushed death, per-meates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him.” Mark 16:1 declares the fact of the resurrection by affirming, “When the Sabbath was over…” indicating the symbol of human cyclical mortal time that has passed in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, from the tomb. Mary Magdalene and the women disciples of our Lord come to the tomb to complete the ritual of burial, but they are greeted by angels, who announce to them the good news of not an ‘end’ but of a ‘new beginning,’ a new begin-ning in human life and history: “Why do you seek the liv-ing one among the dead?” (Luke 25:5). The tomb, the end of human life and hope becomes the source of the fullness of new life and redemption since the resurrection of the Lord Jesus is the foundation of our new life of faith. Saint Paul proudly affirms: “…if Christ has not been raised, then empty [too] is our preaching; empty, too, your faith” (1 Co-rinthians 15:14). The resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is His victory over the forces of evil, sin and death; it is the death of death. It is the real historical event of God’s intervention in human life and history in a definitive way. It is the object of our faith. The veracity of the proclamation that guides our faith in the historical, real even of the Lord’s resurrection is the emphasis of the angelic pro-nouncement: “He is not here” (Matthew 28:6; Mark 16:6; Luke 24:6). The Lord is no longer in the tomb. He is alive! He walks with us along our pilgrim way, strengthens, en-courages and consoles us in the Sacraments of Holy Moth-er, the Catholic Church, and leads us to eternal life with Him. May the Blessed Virgin, our Mother intercede for us! Amen.

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman Peo-ple, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may re-turn to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.
