FIRST DAY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

Monday 29 January 2018 - Years 1-12 will start on this day. All other dates are published in the student diary, which students will receive on the first day of term. Dates are also available on the School website.

Year 7 students are to assemble in the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) before 8:10am.

TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Buses to school and from school • Buses arrive at either Billa Road or Bodalla Crescent in the morning and depart from Billa Road (to Padstow only) or Bodalla Crescent at the end of the day.

Travelling by private car• Pick up and drop off is at Billa Road (top of school), NOT Bodalla Crescent.• Students are encouraged to catch the bus if at all possible because of traffic

congestion around the school.

SCHOOL OPAL CARDS

Students who live over two kilometres from Inaburra and who will be using public transport to get to and from school will need to apply for a School Opal Card. Apply online at https://www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/opal-for-school-students/. The student’s parent or caregiver will need to complete the application form. Opal Cards will be sent directly to your home address.

LATE TO SCHOOL / ABSENCE DUE TO ILLNESS OR MISADVENTURE

Any student who is late to school is to report to the Senior School office with their Student ID Card.

For all lateness and absences, the school will send an SMS to the mobile phone of the first mentioned contact on the student information sheet which parents completed and supplied to the school. The parent who receives this text message is then asked to reply to explain the absence. Once this is done no hand written note is required.

LEAVE FROM SCHOOL (ONE DAY OR MORE)

It is a requirement of the NSW Government that any student who will be absent from school for one or more days must apply to the School for Term Time Holiday Leave at least two weeks prior to the leave being applied for. The application forms are found on the Parent Portal and the School website - ‘Application for Term Time Holiday Leave’ and ‘Application for Exemption from Attendance at School’. Forward the completed and signed application to the Deputy Principal. If leave is granted you will receive a Certificate of Term Time Holiday Leave or a Certificate for Exemption from Attendance at School. An Exemption from Attendance is only approved for participation at an elite sporting event or other exceptional circumstances. If leave is taken and not applied for, or not approved, it will be recorded as ‘unjustified’.

PARENT PORTAL

At the beginning of the school year, new Year 7 parents will receive access to the Parent Portal (a letter with login details will be sent home). Inaburra uses the Parent Portal as the primary source of information for parents and we encourage parents to actively access the Parent Portal. Parents can view school reports and information about absences, excursions and other school events.

The school accumulates a significant amount of lost property. Please ensure that your child’s clothing has his/her name on it. You can buy a laundry marker and write his/her name on the labels of the blazer, jumper and PE gear. Alternatively, the school Uniform Shop sells printed name tags.

HOW TO WEAR THE UNIFORM

THE BLAZER & JUMPER (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)

SUMMER (Terms 1 & 4)• The blazer is only required to be worn on special occasions.• The jumper cannot be worn as the outer garment travelling

to and from school. WINTER (Terms 2 & 3)• The blazer must be the outer garment until after Home

Group in the morning and for travelling home in the afternoon. It must also be worn to assembly.

• The jumper may be worn as the outer garment during the school day, except at assembly.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE GIRLS’ HAIR• Must be completely tied up or back

YEAR 7 SCHOOL INFORMATION

SCHOOL TIMETABLE• Five period day. Each period is approximately one hour long (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). Periods are 50

minutes long on Tuesday.• Two week timetable. Week one of term = Week A timetable, Week two of term = Week B timetable, Week three of term =

Week A timetable etc. Sometimes a term may start on a Week B; however, this would be clearly indicated on the calendar. Students start with roll call in Home Group each morning. There is an extended Home Group on a Wednesday.

• Sport is on Tuesday from 12:25pm to 2:38pm.• Each student will receive his/her timetable on the first day of term. The timetable can also be found on the Student Por-

tal.

LEARNING GOALS AND REVIEW MEETINGS

• Inaburra places considerable emphasis on identifying and meeting the specific welfare and learning needs of students. At least once a semester every student from Years 7 to 12 completes a survey relating to learning issues such as how to improve academic grades, literacy needs and social needs. Every student is personally interviewed by their Home Group Teacher on what they wrote in the survey.

• Home Group Teachers then work with class teachers and the Learning Enrichment Team (see page 13) so that the specific learning needs of every student can be met.

• Parents are encouraged to write to their son/daughter’s Home Group Teacher to update them on their child’s particular needs. Alternatively they can call the teacher directly via the school switchboard on 9543 2533 or email: [email protected] Eg: [email protected]

ACHIEVING THE FUNDAMENTALS

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) is a government body which, among other things, outlines what is to be taught in all NSW schools. Inaburra complies with these standards. Students in Year 7 are required to study the following subjects:

• English• Mathematics• Science• D&T (Design and Technology)

• Learning Foundations• History • Geography • Biblical Studies

• PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education)

• Music • Visual Arts

Other than Biblical Studies and Learning Foundations, NESA writes a syllabus for each subject studied. The teachers at Inaburra write programs which reflect the syllabus requirements as well as seeking to achieve the specific aims and objectives of the school.

CLASS STRUCTURE

Students are placed in mixed ability groups at the start of Year 7. The school will begin academically streaming students in some subjects eg. Mathematics and English later in the semester. Questions related to the placement of students in a particular class should be directed to either the relevant learning leader (e.g. Faculty Learning Leader of English) or to Mr Bailey.

ASSESSING STUDENT WORK

Inaburra School emphasises assessment for learning. This means that student work is assessed and feedback is given on that work. Sometimes the assessed work may not receive a formal mark. For example, an English teacher may ask students to write a two paragraph analysis on a character in a novel. The teacher would then collect that work and write some comments on each student’s work. Some work, however, will be given a formal grade which is recorded on the school report.

Mr Bailey (Director of Curriculum) publishes the due dates of assessment tasks. A paper copy of the dates is given to the students as well as being posted on the Student and Parent Portals. This booklet also contains important key questions and answers about assessment tasks.

MERIT AWARDS

In the Senior School, merit awards are given to students to acknowledge attitude, effort and excellence. Awards are aligned and categorised according to the school’s motto “Faith, Knowledge and Love”. For each class, teachers will issue on average one award per ten students per week.• 15 merits = nomination for Principal’s Award• 3 Principal’s Awards = nomination for an Inaburra Pin that can be worn on the student’s blazer

Inaburra MedalIn Year 12, students can apply to their Year Advisor for award of the medal. Students need to have at least 2 Inaburra Pins (or the equivalent number of merit awards). Eligible students may be interviewed by the Principal who will determine whether the medal is awarded. Medals are presented at the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. If you have questions about merit awards, please speak to the relevant Year Advisor.

BRING YOUR OWN TECHNOLOGY (BYOT)

Please read the information about BYOT in the booklet provided.• Any electronic textbooks will be able to be accessed by students through the Inaburra

Learning Management System (Moodle)• Individual faculties will provide further guidance on the use of BYOT in their classes

MOBILE PHONE USE

Mobile phones are not to be used at school to send or receive personal phone calls or messages. Parents are requested not to call or message their child during the school day as this creates a stressful situation for a child who is caught between breaking School rules and answering their phone.

If a parent wishes to contact their child during the day they should ring Mrs Simmons at the Senior School Office: 9543 2533.

If your child falls ill during the school day, they are to go to the Sick Bay. Staff there will assess the child and contact parents if necessary. Students are not to contact their parents directly.If it is necessary for a child to contact a parent during the day, they may seek permission by going to the Senior School Office and speaking to Mrs Simmons.

AFTERSCHOOLSTUDY PROGRAMMonday to Thursday 2:40pm – 4:30pm A group that meets after school where students can come to get extra help with homework, studying or assessment tasks. Staff andtutors are available for help.

STUDY SKILLSWednesday morning Students have an extended roll call/Home Group.During this time the Home Group Teacher will check student diaries and provide assistance to students to help them be organised in their work. Help with Study Skills can be found at www.studyskillshandbook.com

GOAL: PROVIDING A PATH FOR SPORTING EXCELLENCE: REPRESENTATIVE SPORTAs part of our representative sport program, the school is an active member of the Christian School Sporting Association (CSSA) and Combined Independent Schools (CIS) pathways.

CSSA COMPETITION We compete strongly in the CSSA competitions in a number of sports including Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Football, Netball and Swimming.

SWIMMING

The Inaburra Swimming Carnival is held at the start of each year. It is a fabulous day to develop community connections and commence the pathway for our stronger swimmers. Students who finish in the top two in their age division progress through to represent the school in CSSA and CIS Competitions to State Level. Elite swimmers have the opportunity to represent Inaburra at the All Schools State Championships.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Inaburra Cross Country is a combined Junior and Secondary event held at the end of Term 1. The top four runners in each age division progress through to the CSSA event. At Inaburra, we also see the value in running for everyone. The School enters teams in events such as the Oatley Fun Run, Sutherland2Surf and the Sharks10 where students, teachers and parents participate and compete together.

ATHLETICS

The Inaburra Athletics Carnival is held in Term 2 each year. Successful athletes compete in CSSA and CIS Competitions to State level. Further representation is available through to the All Schools State Championships. The Pacific Games are held every four years.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Inaburra utilises qualified sports coaches to work with our sports teams in preparation for representative sport. Training and development squads play a significant role in developing team spirit, allowing students to acquire new skills, sharpen existing ones and enhance performance.

Participation in development squads is also open to students not yet competing at representative level who wish to further their skills. The focus in 2018 are development squads for those CSSA sports in which Inaburra competes, namely Basketball, Cricket, Football and Netball.

Other competitive teams take part in Inter-school or Gala Day competitions in the following sports:• Hockey (Girls and Boys);• Tennis (Girls and Boys);• Oztag (Girls and Boys);• Touch Football (Girls and Boys);• Volleyball (Girls and Boys);• Softball (Girls and Boys); and• Triathlon (Girls and Boys).

GOAL: INCREASING AWARENESS AND ENJOYMENT OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

There are many demands on a Year 7 student’s time. The school wishes to encourage physical activity to keep students’ bodies and minds fit and healthy. It’s a great way to spend time with friends, meet new people, feel good and break up long stretches of sitting and studying.

Being active every day can help:• improve heart health and fitness;• develop strong muscles, bones and good posture;• maintain a healthy weight;• improve concentration and memory;• learn new skills;• increase self-confidence;• reduce stress;• make and keep friendships; and• improve sleep.

GOAL: BUILDING COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Sport plays an important role in building the Inaburra community spirit through teamwork, persistence, resilience, even coping with injury. Inaburra holds intra-school competitions where students (and staff!) compete on behalf of their (home and year groups), including annual swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals.

GOAL: GLORIFYING GOD IN OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS AND TALENTS

At Inaburra, there are so many things to be thankful to God for. Our response is to glorify, and make known God more in our community, through our actions and attitudes in all aspects of life. Sport and physical activity is another excellent avenue to do this. Whether this is in the way we train and prepare (dedication, teamwork, innovation, respect) or in competition (in our respectful intereactions with officials or opponents, humility and generosity in victory or defeat, commitment to personal best) we at Inaburra aim to represent God well.

WEEKLY SPORTS PROGRAM

Inaburra students in Years 7-10 participate in our weekly sports program each Tuesday afternoon during normal school hours (12:25pm – 2:38pm).

All sports are played at local venues in the Sutherland Shire. Students are transported by bus to and from these venues under the supervision of Inaburra staff and coaches.

Sports rotate each Term, with students selecting their preferred options at the end of the previous Term. Some sports/activities have limited spots available due to venue size, staff ratios and student safety procedures.

Aquatic Awarenessand Skills

Representative teams will be selected by the coach (or coaching staff) after 2-3 trial sessions. Students who are not selected are encouraged to join the Development Squad in that sport, to continue to strengthen their skills and understanding of the game. Students in Representative Teams must uphold the Schools standards on and off the sports field at all times. Failure to do so will result in their place on the team be under review from the Sports Coach, Director of Sport, Year Advisor and Deputy Principal.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORTS PATHWAYS

There are a wide range of sports available for secondary students to pursue. Information for these will be posted on the sports noticeboard (next to the Senior Library), being updated each Tuesday.

DOWNLOAD THE APPKeen sports families are strongly encouraged to download the CSSA and CIS apps which have a wide range of sports information (dates, trials, upcoming events and rules).

NSW CSSA or CIS Individual trial nominations are available across nearly 20 sports. Inaburra students are welcome to nominate for individual trials in their chosen sport. There are strict deadlines with these associations that must be followed. For students and families interested in finding out more regarding specific sports offered, individual trials and other association information please go to the relevant websites:
