Innovative lighting technology for use in medicine: SCHOTT® IllumaMed makes the shortlist for the European Innovation Award

Stuttgart/Mainz (Germany), March 8, 2012 – SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging immediately made the shortlist for the newly introduced Innovation Award from the medical technology industry: The innovative lighting series SCHOTT® IllumaMed that combines innovative glass fibers with LED light sources was nominated for the MEDTEC EMDT Innovation Award in the category “Design Team of the Year in Medical Technology.” The award, currently the only European award in this field,will be presented during the MEDTEC Europe in Stuttgart.

MEDTEC Europe is the largest trade event in the field of medical device manufacturing. On the occasion of the exhibition in Stuttgart, the event organizer will be presenting the European Medical Device Technology (EMDT) Innovation Award for outstanding products and strategies in the field of medical technology. The jury’s main objective is to reward European companies in the medical technologyindustry for contributing to the promotion of better living standards and health all over the world. This is also SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging’s objective with its lighting strategies on functional and ambient lighting in the field of medicine.

With its SCHOTT® IllumaMed sidelight components, the company has developed an innovative technology and filed for a worldwide patent. This flexible contour lighting product combines fiber optic and LED components in a unique manner. It consists of high-quality step-index fibers into which light is coupled by LEDs. Thanks to a special production technique, the injected light emerges laterally from the fiber surface and shines homogeneously over the

entire length of the light path. Thanks to this technology,light can be applied in places in which illumination was extremely difficult in the past.

“Developing innovative solutions made of fiber optic and LED components that offer the best chances of curingpatients and improved working conditions for physicians and nurses was therefore our top priority,” explains Jörg Warrelmann, Business Manager for Medical at SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging. “We view the fact that we were successful with SCHOTT® IllumaMed and ended up seeing our product group make the shortlist for the EMDT Innovation Award as both recognition and an incentive,” he adds.

The spectrum of potential applications for advanced lighting concepts in medical facilities is vast. For instance,SCHOTT® IllumaMed components are capable of illuminating a magnetic resonance tomograph (MRT) to helpavoid claustrophobic reactions. As contour or line illumination, SCHOTT® IllumaMed is also ideally suited foruse with operating equipment, like tables, swivel arms, lights or supply units.

All those hoping to find the light at SCHOTT® IllumaMed will, in fact, find it at SCHOTT’s booth 6246 in Hall 6 at MEDTEC Europe in Stuttgart from March 13 to 15. The company will be presenting its lighting technology solutions for use in clinical applications at this event.
