■ What are the most common cold induced illnesses/injuries?

» Hypothermia When body heat is lost faster than it can be replaced. Body tem-perature drops less than 95°F. Occurs in very cold temperatures.

» Frostbite Caused by freezing of the skin and underlying tis-sues. Typically affects the extremities particularly the feet and hands.

» Trench Foot Caused by prolonged exposure to wet and cold temperatures. To prevent heat loss the body constricts blood vessels which leads to loss of circulation and skin tissue damage.

■ How can cold stress be prevented?

W Dress Warm W Stay Dry

W Keep Extra Clothing Handy

W Drink warm sweetened fluids (no alcohol)
