Dear Parents

We have ended 2019 on a high note this year with

the school achieving the BCA Green Mark Gold

Award which affirms schools for their green

and conservation efforts.

As a nation, we are levelling up our environmental

conservation efforts and Frontier is also giving our

best to save Mother Earth. I am thankful to my

staff and pupils who have made excellent efforts

to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Refuse.

We hope that our parents will also partner us to

reinforce such learning in their children at home

so that there is consistency in the inculcation of

the essential values.

There will be some changes in the school timings

as well as expectations for school attire in 2020

which had been communicated via a letter (hard

and soft copies) sent out on 1 Nov 2019. I urge

parents to refer to the letter and make the

necessary arrangements for their children in

2020.

Principal’s Message

Parents who have placed their orders would have also received the Year Book 2019 based on

the theme of “Reaching for the Frontiers of Tomorrow”. The Year Book which has captured the

significant highlights as well as meaningful moments in 2019, will serve as a great memento for

Frontierers, especially our P6 graduates. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the

school’s Publicity Team led by Ms Jacyntha and with special mention to Mr Muhd Ali who is the

coordinator for the Year Book.

Whilst it has been another year of abundance and blessings, we look forward to the coming

holidays when we can all rejuvenate and recharge for our new journey ahead in 2020. Here’s

wishing all an enjoyable and fruitful bonding!

Used Textbooks Donation Drive

As part of our environmental conservation efforts, Frontier will be carrying out a donation drive for

used textbooks.

The school has partnered NTUC FairPrice organisation for its 36th edition of the FairPrice Share-

A-Textbook project to recycle used textbooks. Textbooks should be in decent condition without

torn pages and free of defacement.

Do join us in this donation drive by sending the textbooks to the

school’s General Office before Friday, 22 November 2019.

Recipients of Edusave CHaracter Award (ECHA) and Frontier Character Award (FCA) 2019 The Edusave CHaracter Award (ECHA) and Frontier Character Award (FCA) are given to deserving pupils

who have excellent character, demonstrate strongly the school values and exhibit a high level of civic

consciousness. The ECHA is an award by the Ministry Of Education (MOE) which seeks to recognize

Singapore Citizens, while the FCA is a school-based award which seeks to affirm pupils who display

outstanding character excellence.

The school has put in place a structured and rigorous process of nomination and selection, and is pleased

SwimSafer and CCA Matters 2020

P3 SwimSafer 2.0 Programme

The P3 SwimSafer 2.0 Programme for 2020 will be carried out during stipulated Physical

Education lessons within curriculum time. More details will be provided early next year.

P3 Structured Co-Curricular Activities

Structured Co-Curricular Activities (SCCA) expose our Primary 3 pupils to bite-sized modular

experiences across the various CCA domain areas, before they select and join a CCA. SCCA for

Primary 3 pupils will take place only in Term 1, 2020 on Mondays or Fridays, starting 13 January

2020.

To provide pupils with more time to ease into their selected CCAs and undergo richer CCA

experiences over Primary 3 to 6, Primary 3 pupils will make their CCA selection after the CCA Fair

to be held at the end of Term 1. More information will be provided in 2020.

NUS High School National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore The NUS High School National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) 2019 is an annual

national competition organized by the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science since 2006.

Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Annual Mathlympics Selected Primary 5 pupils took part in the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Annual

Mathlympics in Semester 2. The competition aims to enhance pupils’ interest and passion in

Mathematics. We are proud to announce that two pupils achieved the Bronze Award in the

qualifying round.

We would like to congratulate our Frontierers for putting in their best in the competition.

Youth Illustrator Award

The Young Illustrator Award is an annual Art

Competition organized by Meridian Secondary

School. It aims to promote the love of doodling and

drawing among youths, and to provide a platform for

young artists to showcase their talents to a wide

audience. This year’s competition challenges youths

to come up with brilliant and original ideas that show

fresh interpretations to a given theme.

An estimated 1300 entries were submitted from over

220 schools, and our Frontierer, Liu Xinquan Cara,

from 6 Loyalty 4, has emerged as one of the top six

finalists. Congratulations Cara for the excellent work

done!

Karya Minda Kreatif Composition Writing Competition The Karya Minda Kreatif Composition Writing Competition is a national level competition

organised to provide an opportunity for pupils to showcase their writing talent in the Malay

Language, and at the same time, encourage creative and fun learning of the language. Five

Primary 5 pupils entered this competition and managed to clinch the Silver and Bronze awards.

Overseas Chinese Youth Creative Writing Competition

Some Primary 4 pupils took part in the Overseas Chinese Youth Writing Competition after the Amitofo

Care Centre (ACC) “Love Chinese, Inspire Life” school exchange programme. In this programme,

some African pupils from ACC were invited to interact with our Frontierers during Racial Harmony Day

in July. They shared their aspirations and their passion for learning the Chinese Language.

After the programme, an overseas essay writing competition was organised for pupils to pen their

thoughts on how they were motivated to master the Chinese Language. More than 2500 students from

different countries participated in this competition. Three of our pupils have done us proud by

achieving the 2nd

prize in this competition. Congratulations Frontierers!

The JeWel Challenge

The JeWel Challenge was organised by Jurong West Secondary School on 7 November 2019 for

Primary 6 pupils from schools in the West Zone. The aims of the challenge are to enable the pupils to

apply linguistics, scientific and mathematical concepts to solve problems in fun and innovative ways.

Two teams of four represented the school to take part in the Challenge. Team Pluto had done the

school proud by emerging the Overall Champion while Team Uranus was the 2nd runner-up for the

Mathematics segment! Congratulations to our Frontierers for their wonderful teamwork displayed!

Three Fairy Tale Analogies for Children

As a parent, have you ever been in a situation where you tried to explain a concept to

your child, only to receive a blank look? You may have read on the internet the importance of

teaching your child about cyber wellness, but have always wondered how to go about

educating your child on it?

Teaching the concept of cybersecurity can be daunting. Why do we need passwords?

What is a phishing email? What is a digital footprint? These are some questions that

your young child might ask you one day, and it is best that you are prepared with how to

answer them.

Storytelling can be a useful way to teach an abstract concept to a young child.

Researchers have shown that storytelling is a fun and relatable way for children to grasp

complex concepts and terms. In this article, three fairy tale analogies - Three little pigs, Snow

White and Hansel and Gretel - are used to teach children all about cybersecurity. Adopting

good cyber hygiene to protect against cyber criminals are good habits that can be instilled from

young!

Are you projecting your stress on your child? All parents want the best for their child. However, unrealistic expectations can affect a child’s mental wellbeing. Dr Irena Kit, lecturer and psychologist at the National Institute of Education (NIE) who is also a mother of an 11-year old son, shares five tips on how managing a child’s stress begins with managing our expectations as parents.

1. Avoid comparisons

Comparing a child with others not only adds more stress to the entire family, it is also not practical. What other people do is beyond our control, as we can only focus on ourselves. Helpful comparisons focus on the child’s current effort against their past efforts. This helps to track and acknowledge the child’s hard work and improvement.

2. Acknowledge efforts, celebrate successes

Some parents consider “Bs are the new Fs” that is, any grade less than A is considered a failure. Though this expectation might not be communicated, children can pick up on parents’ negative vibes, which can hurt the child’s self-esteem and confidence. They not only feel saddened, but also feel guilty about disappointing their parents. Parents should instead, motivate their child by acknowledging efforts and small successes.

3. Choosing a school based on your child’s needs

Parents can be overzealous in shaping the lives of their children, from the subjects they take to the schools they attend. Yet, a popular or top school may not always be the best option. The right school is a school that has a culture and environment parents are comfortable with and one that fits the needs and interests of the child.

4. Grades are not the only source of stress

Parents should be aware that they need to help their kids navigate difficulties with friendships too, not just in grades. Chatting with the child to find out what is happening in their lives is critical.

5. Let your child explore

Parents play many roles in their children’s lives – from caregiver to counsellor. But perhaps one of the hardest is learning when and how to let go.
