“Cultivating the Spirit of Celebration & Laughter”

Our previous issue of “In Touch” had a theme that focused on protection from evil. We published examples of how some members of our congregation have dealt with personal trials that forced them to trust God in the face of darkness. Chip’s sermons have also helped us to look at “‘enemies of the heart” in which evil tries to reside in our spirit. Being human means being in constant warfare with our weaknesses. God wants us to turn away from evil in order to know the fullness of life. As Chip suggested, we should try to celebrate the good things that happen to others rather than feeling envy and jealousy. We need to “lighten up” and do whatever we can to find joy in our daily walk. In the “NIV Women’s Devotional Bible” we found an article that suits this topic. The author is Emilie Barnes. It’s titled “Celebrating Laughter”...”Laughter is a gift of God that brightens our good times and lightens the rough ones. Laughter even has a healing quality to it. People have recovered from serious diseases by learning to laugh each day. Even more people have regained courage to go on in painful circumstances when they were able to laugh. Proverbs 17:22 says that a cheerful heart is good medicine. Laughter can draw others to you and lighten your load in life. When you begin to laugh at life and at yourself you gain new perspective on your struggles. You begin to see a speck of light at the end of the tunnel. Life without laughter quickly becomes a breeding ground for depression, physical illness and a critical spirit. But a laughter-filled life unleashes the spirit of celebration.

So cultivate the spirit of celebration in your life by making room for laughter. Deliberately seek it out. Begin today as you smile at someone and find something worth laughing about. As the laughter permeates your life, the spirit of celebration will take root in your heart and you will discover the meaning of another proverb: “The cheerful heart has a continual feast” (Proverbs 15:15)

LAUGHTER

By Theda Williams

“Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” Victor Hugo

“When people are laughing, they’re generally not killing each other.” Alan Alda

A few nights ago I was lying out on a tube in Old Mission Cove gazing at the stars . . . and I was laughing . . . correction, I was cracking up. Perhaps you might not understand why—I guess maybe you just “had to be there.”

Okay, here are a few more details. There were five other people on the tube which was only designed for three or four, so we had to layer ourselves, hoping we wouldn’t sink. It was dewy and chilly so we had sleeping bags beneath us and over us. A line was attached from the tube to one of our boats, allowing us just enough opportunity to float about a bit as we gazed at the night sky.

We made up stories about shooting stars, airplanes, satellites and space stations . . . and we laughed. We sang stupid little songs that we had learned when we were young . . . and we laughed. We retold old stories with new embellishments . . . and we laughed. As we carefully and stiffly climbed off of the tube and settled in for the night, we were happy and fulfilled. Laughter does amazing things doesn’t it?

I don’t remember a lot of laughter in my home as I was growing up. I know that “silliness” was discouraged and I was taught that life was pretty serious business. And, even though there’s an artist’s painting of Jesus with his head thrown back, laughing, I have a hard time picturing it. I wonder if Jesus and his disciples told “knock-knock” jokes to each other or had little “inside stories” that they laughed about. I’ve just always had the feeling that things were always serious with Him. Did anyone ever dare to lighten the mood? I sure hope so.

When I observe the healing power of laughter in my life, I have to assume that it was part of God’s plan for us. I know that scripture talks about a “merry heart” as being a good thing, but it also talks about appropriate times to mourn and cry. I believe that it is not

difficult to find reasons to be sad, things to regret, or occasions to complain. Life just does that to us. The tricky part is to find or remind each other about our reasons for joy.

I remember twenty years ago, waiting in the lobby for my mother’s funeral to begin. Suddenly I heard raucous laughter coming from the bathroom. I was briefly startled, then comforted because that laughter indicated that my friends had arrived. There was healing power in their laughter. It reminded me that, although my world had changed, the constancy of God’s ability to turn mourning into joy would remain. Laughter not only brings us together, it is a witness to those around us.

Psalm 126:2 says, “Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’”

Celebration By Luan Jackson

Party time! We all love a party, but somehow, the concept of parties has become a problem in the church. Christians began to think that if we were not serious all the time....if we did not maintain a somber attitude....we were not true followers of Christ. It was taught that we were to "pick up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Christ.” I even heard a minister say that if we did not have splinters up and down our backs from the cross, then we were not living a true Christian life.

I disagree totally!!! I believe that Christ knew how to have a good time and throw a good party. Think of the feeding of the five thousand. Just imagine the fun picnic that was... and what about the wedding? Christ stayed until the end; he didn't leave early and go home.

I am not suggesting that we engage in "partying behavior,” but we certainly are free to laugh and to engage in social activities with friends and families.

I think we should start celebrations and make them rituals. What about having "special days"? It could be a celebration when a child learns the entire multiplication tables... we could celebrate Fridays and the start of family time with a living room picnic. Even cleaning can become a fun time with contests and winners and victory parties. Have a "special person red plate" and award a family member for some accomplishment. Hide small objects around the house and have your own treasure hunt. Invite someone from church to go home with you on Sunday....make a hobo stew or a stone soup...play dominoes.... Have theme nights like "Mexican" or "Hungarian"...study the country and teach your kids how to create a food associated with that theme. Invite people of all kinds to share what God has blessed you with.

MOSTLY, CELEBRATE.... Laugh and dance before the Lord with Joy! Praise the Lord with Gladness!

New member BETTY ANDERSON’S attendance at the Reformed Church began many years ago when, after graduating from Charlevoix High School, she married Frank Boss. Although Betty was brought up in the Roman Catholic Church, she and Frank began their life together as members of the Reformed Church when it was located out in the country.

Betty is the mother of Jackie Devine, Patricia Bruce (with whom she now lives), and a son Terry, deceased. She also has seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Family time has always given Betty much joy, but, in earlier years, she also loved riding horses and quiet time knitting.

Growing up, Betty worked for her parents who owned and operated the Parkside Restaurant. She continued to work in the dining room during her adult years. She and her husband Frank owned and operated the Silver Birch Motel. Since Frank was a builder, Betty and Frank spent time between Charlevoix and Florida, Arizona, and California, respectively. Two of Frank’s major projects were a Reformed Church in Arizona and The Tower of Hope for Dr. Schuler in California. Frank passed away in 1978.

Betty was married a second time to Dee Anderson who lived until 1995. A year ago Betty moved from California to live with her daughter in Ellsworth. She has returned to Community Reformed Church where she began her journey in the Reformed faith many years ago.

Kidzone!

Autumn is here and we are so excited to spend time with kids!

Sunday mornings, we gather at the 10:15 service

Wednesday Friends’ Club meets at 6:00 p.m. following the family meal.

On occasion, parents pick up their kids and ask, “Did you have fun today?” - a perfectly

reasonable question! We also understand that this question includes:

Were your emotional needs met today?

Was it engaging?

Did you learn about Jesus?

Was it age appropriate?

Was the lesson relevant?

Was the lesson applied to your everyday life?

Did they honor your learning style?

Did anyone make a personal connection with you?

Did you feel valued?

Did they honor your attention span?

Did you get to talk and share your thoughts?

Have you ever heard people say, "I'm not going to church...my parents made me go as a

child."? We realize that you don't have to "make" kids go where they enjoy being! Have

you ever heard, "I'm not going to Disney World because I was "made" to go as a child.”

We strive to create relevant environments for kids as we share the Bible stories and how

they all tie into Jesus. Our vision includes partnering with parents to help kids grasp the

big central picture of how their faith helps them in all areas of life. We truly seek your

feedback. Thank you for sharing your children with us!

putting it into practice. What would happen if every follower of Jesus took the Great

August Consistory Highlights

Jan Boss shared regarding spiritual formation. She updated Consistory on the fall plan for Adult

Education classes. She also shared about the ongoing impact and encouragement of The Safe Haven

Breakfast Club. There are a growing number of stories of how God is using this breakfast to help

people connect and experience love.

The Consistory heard an update regarding the work of the Facilities Improvement Team. They are

currently visiting other churches, checking out their sanctuary space, and collecting information

regarding possible options for CRC.

The Consistory also responded to the proposed new mission and vision statements including what

our specific focus would be in the next 5-10 years. The Consistory is in agreement that the content

of the mission and vision is correct, but the wording needs some work. Two members of Consistory

have volunteered to reword this proposal. The three main areas of focus are: discipleship,

community involvement and investment, and leadership development. The fall preaching series

will focus on these three areas.

Laughter….Endorphins….Fun... Did you know that Norman Cousins laughed his way out of an incurable disease? Blood pressure is reduced and stress hormones are diminished after merely 10 minutes of a good belly laugh. When is the last time you had a really good laugh? I'm not talking about the Ha Ha Ha superficial type laughter; I'm talking about laughing till you cry and your stomach hurts. The kind of laughter that makes you feel relaxed and peaceful. I have discovered that we rarely take time to laugh and most of us have forgotten how to see humor in our busy lives.

I was not raised with the ability to laugh. My family of origin was serious and goal oriented... I was told that we would have fun when the work was done; unfortunately, the work was rarely done. I realized that I was missing the blessing of laughter, but I didn't know how to acquire it. God knew I needed new training, so He sent me a daughter who saw fun in everything and who laughed regularly. She thought empty paper bags were fascinating and bugs were hilarious to watch. She taught me to laugh and to enjoy my life. Today, I regularly receive evaluations that include my sense of humor and how I made people laugh.

Laughter is the antithesis of sadness and depression. I routinely give my patients the assignment of laughing for 10 minutes every day. They can choose funny movies (I still think Lucille Ball is hilarious) or a funny book..... but they must laugh. Another assignment is to be a child....Choose a number, like 3 or 4, and act like a child of that age for a period of time. Children are easily amused and they don't have inhibitions of what should or should not be funny. Adults who can mimic this freedom find themselves released from their sadness for brief periods of time. This release then translates into a better supply of neurotransmitters and thus a less sad life.

All emotions come from the same center in the brain, and I believe that God created our brains. The Psalmist wrote, "I will praise the Lord because I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (139:14). Therefore, I believe that God gave us the capacity to laugh and enjoy life... He didn't intend for us to stifle that part of our minds. Be creative, warm, fulfilled, peaceful, and full of luxurious neurotransmitters. LAUGH.

My husband and I took a recent vacation with our son and daughter to the cottage where I spent most of my summers as a kid. We had amazing weather there on the shores of Lake Superior in the western U.P. Everyone agrees that the big lake is very cold but by August, one can usually enjoy a swim. Some people do the gradual walk in and others do the plunge. On one bright sunny afternoon, my husband and kids had gotten in the water. I had been lounging in the hot sun and suddenly the lake looked very refreshing. They began to yell and coax me to join them so I made up my mind to go in. I wanted to demonstrate my true “Yooper roots” and with SISU, was going to run in and dive under. Later my husband described the beginning of my run as if it was from a scene on the old t.v. series “Baywatch.” I had intended on making a graceful entry...but instead, the sand had an odd slope which caused me to lose my balance. I tripped and fell, fast and hard, face down in about six inches of water. I tried to get up but as I raised my head out of the water on my hands and knees, all of my hair had been washed over my face. Oh how embarrassed I was--realizing that all the people on the beach on either side of our lot had witnessed my mishap! I split my dripping hair so I could see and started laughing. My family was bursting as they tried not to laugh and my son asked “Mom, are you okay??” I couldn’t talk because I was laughing so hard. Once they saw that I wasn’t hurt, they all began to laugh, and laugh and laugh!!! My son Gunnar, in a moment of empathy said, “Mom, we’re not laughing AT you, we’re laughing WITH you!” With a skinned knee from the sand, I was able to find the humor in the moment which I will hear about until the day I die.

As I pondered our theme for this issue of In Touch, this experience came to mind. We all fall down from time to time. Being able to laugh at ourselves helps to soften the fall. I believe that humor is God’s gift to help us through tough situations. Often times, what seems like a terrible event is minor in the big picture. Whenever we make a mistake I have a feeling that God never laughs AT us. Instead he lovingly laughs WITH us!

Safe Haven - Free Breakfast Club Update by Joy Klooster

Our numbers at the breakfasts have been great this summer, averaging around 30. Newcomers are always joining the regulars. The relationships developed among the attendees and between the attendees and the volunteers are priceless. Smiles are contagious and friendships are formed. Conversations are rampant. God has truly blessed this ministry. We have an amazing group of volunteers who make the experience so worthwhile.

Save the date for the next Fair Trade Festival at Community Reformed Church. The event will be held on November 2, 2013. Contact Jan Boss if you are interested in being a vendor. Sign-up sheets will be available for volunteers on that day. Funds raised by the sale of pancakes and Fair-Trade coffee will benefit the Safe Haven Breakfast Club.

Donations of breakfast food items, paper products, time and money are always welcome. Thank you for all your support.

RCW Your RCW is very excited about the many events being planned for the women of CRC and our community. The first of which is “Secret Sisters Sundae Social” scheduled for October 7th at 7:00 p.m.

Secret Sister Ministry aims to glorify the Lord by lifting up your “Secret Sister” in Christ. We are to lift our Secret Sister up spiritually and mentally. Remember her birthday, anniversary and other special days and shower her with a token of love at least once a month. It’s not about material things but a way to show love toward your “Secret Sister” in Christ through prayer, or a card, letter or note to let her know she is being thought of. Your Secret Sister will be selected at the “Secret Sisters Sundae Social” and will be revealed at the “Spring Fling on May 5th.

Watch for more information on “Secret Sisters Sundae Social” and the many more opportunities to connect with the women of CRC and the community.

for these children – how can we do any less? Vicki Mullins, Director of Orphan Ministry, East-West Ministries International

On Orphan Sunday, Christians stand for the orphan. We are a people called to defend the

Orphan Sunday is November 3rd. This year we will celebrate by holding our service at the

Charlevoix Middle/High School at 9:30 a.m. The service will bring light to how God calls

each of us to care for the orphan and vulnerable child. Breakout sessions with more

********** Ellsworth residents, RAYMOND AND PATRICIA BRUCE, both grew up in Charlevoix. They were married in California, traveled and lived in a number of different states, and in the year 2000 cycled back to the “area they love,” northern Michigan.

While Ray is a retired master plumber and Pat, along with homeschooling her children, had a wholesale floral business in California, they are definitely not retired. A number of years ago, the Bruce family started building “gift crates” in their garage. This endeavor, which began as The Basket Company, has grown to become Mi Farm Market (recognized as part of Pure Michigan) where they sell food products, gift items, and gift arrangements. All of their products are from local farms, orchards, and crafters. Their growing business is available online, in Ellsworth and at the Traverse City Commons.

Their work serves as both a means of livelihood and a hobby. Ray and Pat like nothing more than spending time with family, and the Market is a family collaboration. Their four children—Shannon, Shad, Sheason, and Scotty—all live in the surrounding area. Ray and Pat especially enjoy spending time with their eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. They are looking forward to the birth of a second great-grandchild in September!

Ray and Pat have chosen to become members of Community Reformed because they appreciate Pastor Chip’s “wonderful sermons.” They come to us by transfer of membership from Safe Harbor Baptist Church.

********** Petoskey residents, MATT AND LAUREN WERTMAN, are parents to Graham (3 years) and Cora (14 months). They are excited to have moved

their family into a new home the end of June.

Matt grew up in Traverse City; then, he earned a Business Degree from Western Michigan University. Lauren graduated from Troy High in southern MI, but she summered with her family north of Harbor Springs. She attended Hope College where she earned a BSN (Nursing) degree. Both Matt and Lauren worked at Spring Hill Camp while in college; ironically, they did not meet there.

The two met when Lauren was working in the oncology department at Munson in Traverse City. They began their married life in T.C. but moved to Philadelphia where Lauren was employed at the Chester County Hospital and Matt worked as a property- insurance claims adjuster. Matt began his career with State Farm but is currently employed in the same position with Auto Owners. Lauren is busy being a stay-at-home mom.

The Wertmans wanted to return to northern Michigan, and their prayers were answered when Matt was able to transfer to the Petoskey area. They are happy to be close to family and love the outdoors and all the area’s fresh produce.

Following college, Matt spent five months hiking the Appalachian Trail. Besides hiking, he enjoys camping, swimming, boating, skiing and snowshoeing.

Lauren shares his interest in outdoor activities, adding figure skating and beginner gardening to her list. They especially enjoy spending time with family.

The Dhaseleers, friends of Matt and Lauren, invited them to CRC when they were church shopping. They enjoyed the people, church opportunities for growth, and Chip’s sermons. They felt “led to become a part of this church.” They have transferred membership from Covenant Fellowship, part of the Sovereign Grace Ministry, in Philadelphia.

********** Native son BARNEY WAY AND HIS WIFE KRIS, who grew up in Howell, Michigan are the parents of five daughters. Katie (Paul) Glotzhober is the mother of two children—Sophie (3 yrs.) and MacKenzie (10 months); Kari Way, a personal assistant to the developer of Bay Harbor and a similar property in the British Virgin Islands; Kim (Cyril) Jones, an expectant mom in October; Kandis Way, a student at the Grand Rapids Aveda School of Cosmetology; and Kelsey Way, a second year student at Northwood University in Midland.

Barney was in business with his father for a number of years. For the last fifteen years, he has been in partnership with Scott Boss at the Dry Harbour Marine.

Kris is employed at the Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center in Charlevoix.

Together, Barney and Kris enjoy the outdoors, especially boating, vacationing in Florida, and spending time with family. Individually, Kris enjoys running and baking while Barney prefers snowmobiling.

Kris and Barney felt they were led to Community Reformed where there is a “welcoming family feeling;” they already “know many of the members, “ and they “appreciate Chip’s sermons.” They also like the Wednesday night opportunities and fellowship. Kris serves on the RCW Board and helps with the Safe Harbor Breakfast

Club.

Barney and Kris are excited about becoming grandparents again in October. They have requested prayers for their son-in-law, Cyril, who serves in the U.S. Army and has left for Afghanistan for a six month-one year tour of duty.

********** While new member, TIMOTHY TROUPE, is not a native of Michigan, he has been a Michigander for a number of years. He met his wife, Laura Kemp, on the internet; their relationship prompted his move to Charlevoix. Tim has a twenty-one-year-old daughter, Holly, who lives in Philadelphia.

Tim grew up and graduated from high school in Pennsylvania. He earned a degree in medical lab technology from Alfred State College, a part of the New York University system. A job at Dow Chemical brought Tim to Michigan. Then, he returned to school, earning a BS in biology and chemistry at Central Michigan University. Next, he pursued studies in optometry at Ferris State University where he achieved his OD degree. Tim has worked as an optometrist for sixteen years at various locations throughout Michigan. Recently, Tim returned to school at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, studying/training to be a ship’s captain. His career plan is to continue working part time as an optometrist, perhaps alternating between months spent on land and sea.

Not surprisingly, Tim loves the outdoors. He especially enjoys kayaking, hiking, and biking but also likes to snowshoe, fish, and golf.

Tim says Laura’s beliefs led him back to church attendance while he was still living downstate, yet he found a “church family” with Laura here at CRC. Tim says the congregation is “positive and welcoming,” and he “learns a lot from Chip’s sermons.” Tim and Laura are members of a small group that really adds to the “family feeling.”
