Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County

and Delaware County?

Celebrate with an Oneg

Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom, for example our next Friday night dinner? They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

Do we have a complete list of

your Yahrzeits? We send out a reminder letter each month. If

you don’t get one, we don’t have your Yahrzeit records up to date. Email the office with the name, relationship to member, and civ-

il date including year and we will add it

to our records.

Dear Congregants, While we usually have a

minyan during Sabbath services, there are times we miss.

It is especially disheartening when we miss and someone is

here to say kaddish. If you intend to

celebrate a Yahrzeit, please inform Rabbi Jacob and he will make telephone calls to ensure there. It would also be helpful if

you could bring members of your family or friends.

Thank you

Rabbi Jacob

“I’m Stepping Down” Effective June 30, 2016, after three years of serving as President of Congregation Or Shalom, I am stepping down. When I succeeded Fred Leibowitz in the summer of 2013, I originally planned to serve only one two-year term. However, when my term was set to expire last year, it was apparent that no one was ready to take my place, so I agreed to stay on. It is now a year later, and the time for transition has come. I have challenged the Board to find my replacement within or without its current ranks, and I am confident that they will rise to the challenge. When I look back at the last three years, there are several things that we have done that we should be proud of. We succeeded in finding a wonderful tenant for the first floor of our education wing, bringing in much needed revenue. We were successful in obtaining a line of credit from Meridian Bank to ease our cash flow. We took the bold step of moving away from the conventional dues and tuition system to a more flexible pledge system, something that is slowly happening at many synagogues across the country. And, we are optimistic about our budding religious school partnership with Congrega-tion Beth El Ner Tamid, which brings with it larger class sizes and increased education dynamics, benefitting both congrega-tions. We have also faced challenges. We had two transitions in the office manager position within one year. We had to fix our financial records and database system. We lost some congregants to moving away and, even more unfortunately, we lost some to passing away. On a more personal level, I did not succeed in my effort to institute a more robust committee system to help streamline the various operations of the synagogue. That was one of my main organizational goals when I took over, and I’m afraid I failed in that endeavor. There are so many people to thank for their help over the past three years. I’d list them, but I’m too fearful that I’d acci-dentally leave someone out. Let me close by saying that it has been a privilege to serve as President of Congregation Or Shalom, a place that’s been an integral part of my family’s life for more than 40 years. B’Shalom, Stuart Lurie

Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner

One of the challenges of every generation of Jews, is the transmission of our traditions m’dor l’dor, from generation to generation. we are justly proud of our religious school and the performances of our youngsters at their bar/bat mitzvahs. On that level, our focus on tefilah has paid off as our youngsters have often conducted most of the service in addition to the traditional maftir and haftarah. More important are the youngsters who have made their bar/bat mitzvah the beginning rather than the end of their commitment to our people. While I have been disappointed that so few attend our services on a regular basis, (there are and have been a few), I am proud of those who have chosen to continue their Jewish education. A number of our youngsters have joined CBENT and attend their high school program. When the time will come we will proudly welcome them to be confirmed in our synagogue. On this coming Shavuot, we will have our first confirma-tion in the past three years. We congratulate Adam Morrow and Zach Allon who have completed their program and will be confirmed during Shavuot. They represent our future. Please join us as we honor their commitment on Sunday morning June 12th

From the Education Director Na’ama Yarden

What have we achieved in our Religious School this year?

We had a fulfilling year of learning Hebrew, Torah, Holidays, prayers, music, Israeli dancing and Israel. This was the second year we had the separate classes for Israelis. Kachol-Lavan program is an important educational experience for Israeli kids who lives away from Israel. This year we more than doubled the amount of students we had. This is a great add on to our school as it brings more students under our roof, and provide opportunities to bring Israel closer to our hearts.

We celebrated all the holidays together, each holiday was celebrated in a different way, but the feel-ing of community was reinforced throughout all the events and our students have developed a strong sense of belonging and connection to each other and to their heritage and synagogue. A nice demonstration of it was last week, at our Lag BaOmer event, when all students played games together: younger and older, Israeli and Americans, boys and girls, parents and kids. The notion that Judaism is a community-oriented religion is an important understanding that we instill in our stu-dents.

Each of the grades had their Shabbat dinner, when the children proudly led services for the commu-nity. This special day represents the responsibility we want our students to take as members and leaders in the community. Responsibility, dedication and participation are all important to create a vibrant community and it all starts at a young age.

Every Sunday we got to learn also through music or dance. The havdalah services for our students and the holiday and Israeli songs were conducted by Morah Miriam Leshem. When we did not have music, we danced. The students know a lot of Israeli dances by now and I love seeing the energy and the singing while dancing. We teach our students that music and elevated spirit take a big part of Judaism. Every Sunday morning, the older kids participated in a shacharit service in the sanctu-ary and had music or dance after it.

The pace of the events kept us busy as the months flew by! We will hold our graduation ceremony in the sanctuary on Sunday, June 5, at 11AM. The whole community is invited to join us for a BBQ lunch following the ceremony.

Culture is best transmitted through authentic, engaging and enjoyable activities. The most effective learning is happening through experiential learning that enables students to think and act in creative ways. Our devoted teachers worked very hard to make every school day meaningful. We try to de-velop a significant program that supports each of our students in developing their own Jewish Identity.

FIRE PIT AND PATIO to be built at OR SHALOM!!

Hi, my name is Ari Bernstein.

I've been a member at Or Shalom, along with my family, since I was born, and I had my Bar Mitzvah here last year. I am currently working on my Eagle Project for Boy Scouts and have decided to make something for Or Shalom. I love fire.

It's always my favorite part of camping. I was so excited last year when someone brought a fire pit here to shul during one of the Hebrew School's Saturday night Hav-

dalah services. We all had a great time singing around the fire and making s'mores. Even the adults liked it. I wished we could have done that every week.

Fire and singing bring people together. With a brick fire pit, we can have fires more often, especially when we invite

prospective families to our synagogue. I think it is something our congregants will enjoy for a long time.

As part of my project, I have done all the planning and even got a permit from the Township. But I also need your help. I will need donations to help fund it, and later

I'll need volunteers to help build it. The total cost will be $1200.00. Any amount will help -$20, $50, $100 (or more)--

whatever you can contribute is appreciated.

Please send checks made out to Troop 45 to: Ari Bernstein, 501 Doral Circle, Berwyn PA 19312.

Thank you very much. Sincerely,

Ari

Sisterhood news

Thanks so much to Betsy Cohen for hosting our annual Sisterhood Closing Dinner! A big thank you, once again, to Julie Miller for helping with the Passover preparations in the kitchen and ordering the delicious Seder dinner. Thanks to LP and Ayalah Sorkin for setting up, and the Rabbi for leading such a fine Seder. It was a wonderful evening at the synagogue. I hope all of you can come to our annual Sisterhood Shabbat service on Saturday, June 4th. Please let Brenda Belkin or Betsy Cohen know if there is a pray-er you would like to lead, and let me know if you would like to help prepare the lunch. I also want to thank Laurie Katz, Julie Miller, and everyone who helped with the onegs and luncheons this year. As this year is coming to a close, I would like to remind you that I am still looking for someone to take over as Sisterhood President in the fall. I would be happy to help with the transition. And if you have any ideas for events, please contact me. We will have a book club meeting this summer; more info will be in the weekly emails. I hope to see you on June 4th! JEWISH ADOPTION AND FAMILY CARE OPTIONS

Nothing is more tragic than a family torn apart. When a child is removed from their family, they leave behind what they have known and take with them their fears, anger, hurt and insecurities. We believe that we can provide one less obstacle in the healing process by providing a child with a familiar cultural and religious environment. We

believe every child deserves a safe and loving home.

Monthly Foster Care/Adoption Orientation Meeting

Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a foster or adoptive parent is in-vited to join us on one of the following evenings for an informative meeting:

June 6th, July 11th, Aug 1st, Sept. 12th, Nov. 7th, Dec. 5th Time: 6:30 pm

Location: JAFCO 234 S. Bryn Mawr Ave., Ste. 100, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010

This orientation will give attendees a chance to gain a general understanding about the foster care and adoption process and ask any questions you may have.

Please share this flyer with everyone you know so that we can assure that all

children in our community have a safe and loving home.

Thank you for caring about the children in our community who need our love and

support.
