Faced with 3 full members in the group stage (Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh), the Garamuts displayed some real persistence and talent to perform competitively in almost all matches. Their campaign began with Bangladesh, and PNG were confident of causing a minor upset. PNG won the toss and elected to bat, and after being reduced to 4 for 29, eventually reached a solid total of 191 from 46 overs. Tony Ura was the star with bat smashing 68, well supported by Captain Jason Kila (41) and Sese Bau (23). PNG gained enormous belief when they reduced Bangladesh to 4 for 77, and the match was certainly in the balance, before a patient partnership ended the match, Bangladesh reaching the target with 5 wickets in hand. After falling to Pakistan and the West Indies, where in both matches PNG were extremely competitive, the Garamuts moved in to the Plate Championship to decide upon final rankings for the tournament. Up against Afghanistan in the quarter final, PNG batted first and scored a healthy 9 for 173 from their 50 overs, with Sese Bau again amongst the runs (43) and wicketkeeper/batsman Steven Eno (55*) also contributing. Eno and Number 11 Timothy Mou (27*) had an extraordinary partnership of 73 to guide the Garamuts to a competitive total. In reply, Afghanistan were never in the hunt, falling to 5 for 40 early on before being dismissed for 143. The star for PNG was fast- bowler Raymond Haoda Junior, who grabbed 5 for 34 from his 10 overs, well supported by medium pacer John Boge Reva (3 for 34 from 10 overs). Unfortunately in the Plate Championship Semi Final PNG came up against a red-hot Bangladesh outfit, and were duly beaten comprehensively to move into the playoff for 11 th /12 th against Canada. After winning the toss and batting first, PNG made a superb start through openers Heni Siaka and Lega Tau, reaching 0 for 65, before a middle order collapse meant PNG reached a disappointing 145. In reply, Canada were also in trouble at 4 for 51 before steadying the ship and batting patiently to pass the Garamuts total in the final over, with just 5 balls to spare. While the Garamuts would not be satisfied with 12 th place, PNG represented the EAP region well and will no doubt be a stronger force next time around.

PNG Garamuts finish a commendable 12th in 2010 ICC U19 World Cup

The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Garamuts represented the EAP region well in the recent 2010 ICC Under 19 World Cup held in New Zealand in January 2010.

Samoa beat Fiji to qualify for the 2010 Pepsi ICC EAP Womens Cricket Trophy

The Samoan Womens National Team have defeated Fiji in a 3 match series to book a place at the 2010 Pepsi ICC EAP Womens Cricket Trophy to be played in Sano, Japan in May 2010. With torrential rain marring the first morning of the series, the likelihood of getting any play on Day 1 looked remote, but thanks to the outstanding drainage at the Samoa Gardens grounds, Match #1 eventually began at 3:00pm local time with a rain reduced 25 over match. Samoa won the toss and elected to bat, and with star players Mindy Hodgson and Regina Lilii batting well, reached a competitive 124 in 23 overs. Fiji began the chase confidently, with current South Australian representative Alicia Dean and former New Zealand National Squad member Losalini Vuetibau looking to score quickly. Losalini batted extremely well to make 57 before Fiji were bowled out just 6 runs short of victory. Match #2 did not live up to the high standards set in Match #1, with Fiji knocked over for a disappointing 38, Samoan bowlers Fou and Regina both picking up 3 wickets. In reply, Samoa reached the target without losing a wicket in just 6 overs. Samoa will now look ahead to the upcoming 2010 Pepsi ICC EAP Womens Cricket Trophy in Japan in May, in what looks to be an extremely evenly matched tournament. This tournament acts as a Global Qualifier with the winner progressing to the 2011 ICC Womens World Cup Qualifier. From there, the top 4 teams will progress to the ICC Womens World Cup to be held in 2013.

The ICC, Cricket Australia and the Australian Government to strengthen cricket in the Pacific The International Cricket Council (ICC), Australian Government and Cricket Australia (CA) have signed up to a partnership for capacity building and strengthening of cricket development programmes in the Pacific. ICC President David Morgan signed the agreement in Canberra at the Prime Minister's XI cricket match against the West Indians along with Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and CA Chief Executive James Sutherland. The partnership includes Australian Government support of up to AUS$1.6million over four years, and will initially focus on Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa and Solomon Islands. "The ICC is delighted to be partnering the Australian Government and Cricket Australia to strengthen the development of cricket in targeted Pacific island nations, said Mr. Morgan. "This funding represents the most significant investment from a Full Member country to the 'developing' cricket world since the commencement of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme. "Over the past decade, the ICC's East Asia-Pacific (EAP) development programme has been supporting the sustained development of cricket in the region which houses 10 ICC member countries and a growing player base of over 70,000 active participants. "This support presents a great opportunity to build on these existing structures and improve the quality and delivery of cricket in Pacific island communities." Sport is widely recognised as a vital tool in building stronger communities, not least through providing opportunities for youth leadership and achievement, and the partnership will give players, leaders, administrators, coaches and officials opportunities to progress to levels beyond community competitions, as well as strengthening the sport at the grassroots. The partnership is an agreement between the ICC's EAP development programme, CA, the Australian Government's Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Australian Sports Commission.
