Six Mustang Standouts Inducted into SMU Athletics Hall of Fame 2014 SMU’s most storied athletes gathered on May 2nd at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas to celebrate the induction of another outstanding SMU Athletics Hall of Fame class. SMU Athletics, in conjunction with the Lettermen’s Association, welcomed five athletes and one coach into the Hall of Fame. The Class of 2014 includes Harvey Armstrong (Football—1978-1981), Keith Connor (Men’s Track & Field— 1980-1983), Florence Ezeh (Women’s Track & Field—1998- 2001), Christine Loock (Swimming & Diving—1972-1976), Coach Ted McLaughlin (Men’s Track & Field 1980-1988), and Logan Stollenwerck (Football—1920-1924), who was inducted post- humously. The evening featured a special video presentation on each inductee, highlighting some of their greatest moments and recounting the qualities that made them champions both on and off the field of competition. Many of the inductees’ teammates, friends, and family were on hand to mark the occasion. They, along with SMU notables and members of the Lettermen’s Association board of direc- tors, enjoyed celebrating the Hall of Fame’s newest inductees and welcoming back many of the current members to Dallas. The induction ceremony was presided over by SMU President Dr. R. Gerald Turner. Athletics Director Rick Hart and Hall of Fame Commit- tee Chair Jim Johnston also took part in honoring the six inductees and their families. This year’s class will have plaques featured in the permanent Hall of Fame display at Moody Coliseum alongside those of previous inductees. The display features a plaque detailing the accomplishments of each inductee. The class of 2014 plaques, which were on display at the VIP reception prior to the May 2nd induction ceremony, will be installed in the display this offseason. Track and Field Captures 2014 Outdoor Championship After a three-day competition in which the Mus- tangs claimed seven individual American Athletic Conference Titles, the Women’s Track & Field team took home the inaugural outdoor conference championship on May 4th. In winning the out- door event, the team completed a Triple Crown, having also won the 2013 Cross Country champi- onship in September and the 2014 Indoor Track & Field championship just a few months ago. SMU’s total score of 153.2 was well over runner- up UCF’s score of 138.6. Individual champions for the Mustangs included Lucija Cvitnovic (javelin), Rayann Chin (discus), Stephanie Kalu (100M dash), Tova Magnusson (3000M Steeplechase), Helena Perez (hammer throw), and Agnes Sjöström (5000M run). Head Coach Dave Wollman and his staff also received Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Nine Mustangs earned All-Conference Honors, and Lucija Cvitnovic was named Most Outstand- ing Field Athlete for the meet. The team dedi- cated their efforts to teammate Hannah Moss. Hannah, a sopho- more at SMU, passed away earlier in the school year. Coach Wollman said that the team’s desire to honor her memory spurred on a strong per- formance. After a historic first season in the American, the Mustangs were back in action on May 29-31 at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Lucija Cvitnovic and Tova Magnusson both qualified for the NCAA championships in the heptathalon and 3,000 M Steeplechase, re- spectively. The 2014 Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for June 11-14 in Eugene, OR. Junior Sprinter Stephanie Kalu set a personal record in the 100meter dash and took home 1st place in the event. President’s Corner It’s hard to believe, but we’ve reached the end of yet another school year on the Hilltop. The Mustangs have produced some truly incredible seasons this year, and I hope many of you had the chance to see an SMU team in action, whether here in Dallas or on the road. Here are just a few of the highlights from the year :

The Women’s Track & Cross Country teams set the standard for excellence this year, winning all three conference championships (Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field, and Outdoor Track & Field). Despite the untimely and tragic loss of sophomore Hannah Moss earlier this year, the team exemplified resilience and perseverance by continuing their outstanding performance in honor of their late teammate. Nor were they alone in their winning ways. Women’s Golf sophomore Jenny Haglund took home the individual champi-onship in the women’s AAC tournament, while sophomore Bryson Dechambeau won the same honor in the men’s tournament, leading the team to a conference victory as well. Of course, Men’s Basketball had a historic season, catapulting the Mustangs to unprecedent-ed levels of notoriety and esteem nationally. With both the men and the women making a post-season appearance in the NIT, the first season in the newly renovated Moody Colise-um was a memorable one for both basketball teams. In addition, the coaching staff in Women’s Track & Field, Men’s Diving, Cross Country, and Men’s Golf were all honored with Coach of the Year accolades. We look forward to the continued success of all SMU’s student-athletes in the year ahead.

It was also a successful year for the Lettermen’s Association. Our fall reunion last October honored the 1983 football team and 2003 women’s soccer team, and we also had the chance to name John Tolleson the 2013 Honorary Letter awardee. In January, our basket-ball players reunited for the opening games at new Moody, and just a month later, we honored another former basketball player, Oscar Roan, with the Silver Anniversary Mus-tang award. Oscar’s successes on the football field and basketball court are only matched by his outstanding achievements in the realm of community service and ministry. In late April we welcomed the latest group of Mustang alumni to the Lettermen’s fold at the young alumni spring mixer. And finally, just a few weeks ago, we inducted six Mustang athletes as the newest members of the SMU Athletics Hall of Fame. It was truly a night to celebrate as teammates, coaches, friends, and family came together to recognize these outstanding Mustangs.

We are truly blessed to be able to count ourselves in the company of these great past and present SMU athletes. It is one of the many benefits to staying connected to the Letter-men’s Association and our university. I hope you will consider activating your membership by calling our office at 214-768-4000, joining us for a game, or attending an event in 2014-15, as SMU continues to make its mark on the world. We’ll have a seat waiting for you!

Men’s Golf Earns Highest National Finish since 1972; Sweeps AAC Championship Titles Sophomore Bryson Dechambeau led the way on April 29th as the Mustang Men’s Golf team captured the inaugural American Athlet-ic Conference championship in Innisbrook, FL. Dechambeau also took home the individual title, carding a seven-under 206 for the event. He was one of only three players to finish under par for the tournament. Sophomore Austin Smotherman finished tied for fourth at even par. Senior Harry Higgs ended tied for 12th, and Junior Ryan Bur-gess finished 19th. The Mustangs then advanced to the NCAA Regionals in San An-tonio, where their fourth-place finish was good enough to send

them to the NCAA Championships in Hutchison, KS. They finished stroke play tied for seventh and were able to advance to the eight-team match play playoff on May 27th. Though the Mus-tangs gave No. 1 seed Alabama a close match, ultimately the defending champi-ons won out, 3-2. Head Coach Josh Gregory expressed pride in his team for advancing so far and optimism for con-tinued success in the years to come. By advancing to the eight-team playoff, SMU claimed its best national finish since 1972.

Following his AAC Championship performance, Dechambeau was named to the PING All-Central Region Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was also a Ben Hogan award semifi-nalist and will play on the American Palmer Cup team in June. Congratulations to SMU Men’s Golf on an outstanding season!

Mustangs finish strong in NIT; look ahead to next season It was an enthusiastic SMU crowd that welcomed the Mustang Men’s Bas-ketball team to Madison Square Garden on Thursday, April 3rd. After an exciting postseason run in the National Invitation Tournament, which includ-ed home victories over UC-Irvine, LSU, and a thrilling last-minute victory over Cal, the Mustangs found themselves en route to the NIT Final Four in New York City. SMU handily beat Clemson in the semifinals on April 1, and geared up for a tough match in Big Ten opponent Minnesota. In the end, the Mustangs came up just short, falling to the Gophers 65-63. However, the season was a truly historic one for SMU, tying the all-time win-loss record for the school and providing SMU with its first NIT appearance since 2000, along with a record nine consecutive home sellouts and four wins against ranked opponents during the season. With many news outlets already predicting an NCAA Tournament appearance for next year’s team, the Mustangs appear poised for success in a new era of SMU Basketball. Current season ticket holders should expect renewal infor-mation in early May. Fans inter-ested in new season tickets may click here for further details on requesting season tickets.

Haglund Wins Inaugural AAC Individual Championship Sophomore Jenny Haglund claimed the 2012 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Indi-vidual title on April 22nd at the Hammock Beach Ocean Course. Haglunad shot a one-under 71 for the second-consecutive day to emerge victorious, and her two-over 218 led the Mustangs to an overall finish of 64-over 928, good for a third-place team finish at the inaugural conference champion-ships.

Haglund's title is the first for SMU since Barbara Blackwell captured the Southwest Conference title in 1992 in San Antonio. Haglund, a sophomore, claimed her first collegiate championship with the win. A native of Karlstad, Sweden, she entered the final round with a three-stroke lead, but faced tough com-petition from Emily Haas of Louisville. Haglund birdied the 12th and 13th to reclaim the lead and ulti-mately won the tournament by five strokes.

“It was a lot of fun out there today,” Haglund said. “I stayed patient out there, and just played my game. It means a lot to me to win this; it meant a lot for me to be celebrate with my teammates.”

SMU had a strong performance from the whole team as well. Senior Maria Elena Villamil and sopho-more Alexandra Rossi finished the tournament in a tie for 14th, while junior Jennifer Park recorded a seven-over 79 to finish in 25th.

No. 38 Louisville erased a four-stroke deficit to win the team title by a stroke on the final day over No. 18 UCF. The Mustangs tied a season-best for the team’s finish in a tournament.

The team was selected to compete in the NCAA Central Regionals in Stillwater, OK on May 8th. SMU finished 17th with sophomore Alexandra Rossi leading the way with a 3-over 75. It was the second consecutive postseason bid for the Mustangs, and Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland expressed her satisfaction with the team’s improvement. Haglund missed the final round at the Regionals due to injury.

Three SMU Programs Earn Perfect APR Scores

The NCAA released the latest round of Academic Pro-gress Rates on Wednesday, and three SMU programs - women's golf, men's swimming and volleyball - scored perfect 1,000s for the 2012-13 academic year. Overall, all of SMU's teams met the NCAA requirements.

In addition, nine of the Mustang programs scored above 970 for the four-year span - men's and women's golf, rowing, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming, women's tennis and volleyball.

This year marks the 10th year of APR data for most teams. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

To see all of SMU's APR scores, click here.

The APR uses a system based on eligibility and reten-tion. Every student-athlete can earn two points each term: one for eligibility and one for returning to school. If a student-athlete maintains eligibility for the next se-mester and returns, the team he or she plays for gets two points (2/2). If a student-athlete is eligible but leaves school, the school loses one point (1/2). If a student-athlete loses eligibility and also leaves school, the school loses two points (0/2). Every student-athlete's score is added up and divided by the maximum number of points attainable to come up with a team total and APR.

Former SMU Assistant Coach named to College Football Hall of Fame

Jerry Moore, who coached at SMU from 1965-1972, has been named to the Collegiate Football Hall of Fame along with 14 players and fellow coach Mike Bellotti. Coach Moore came to SMU in 1965 from Cor-sicana High School and served as the receivers coach under Hayden Fry until 1972, working with standout Mustangs such as Jerry LeVias and Gary Hammond. In 1972, he went on to the Uni-versity of Nebraska until he received the head

coaching job at North Texas State (the current University of North Tex-as) in 1979. He also coached at Texas Tech University and Arkansas before taking on the head coaching job at Appalachian State University in 1989. In 24 seasons at Appalachian State, Coach Moore posted just one losing season. The Mountaineers captured the NCAA Division I-AA Champi-onship three times in a row from 2005-2007. The induction ceremony for the 2014 class will be held in New York on December 9 at the 57th National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner. Coach Moore was also selected as a member of the 2014 Class of the Southern Conference Hall of Fame and was inducted on March 10 in Asheville, NC. Former players wishing to send their congratulations to Coach Moore may contact the Lettermen’s office (214-768-4000 or [email protected]) for his address.

Declare Your Tradition A lot can happen in 100 years – and it has. Since Coach Ray Morrison held his first foot-ball practice on the morning of Sept. 14, 1915, marking the birth of the SMU football pro-gram, SMU has experienced much athletics success. To celebrate “A Century of SMU Athletics,” SMU Athletics will be counting down 100 iconic moments in its history leading up to the first football game of 2014 on August 30th at Baylor. Be sure to follow SMU Athletics on social media to relive and revel in these histor-ical moments. You can also follow the count-down online at http://www.smumustangs.com/100/. The celebra-tion will continue throughout the 2014-2015 season and be highlighted in promotional items, in-game features and more! As part of this celebration, fans are invited to “Declare Your Tradition.” What does being a part of SMU Athletics mean to you? Is it tail-gating on the Boulevard with your family before attending a football game? Or dressing in costumes to attend men’s basketball games? Share your photos and stories on social media with the hashtag #DeclareSMU or submit to [email protected] and your photos and/or stories could be used in upcoming promotional materials!
