Promo Idea: Play the music from the movie’s soundtrack while tabling to draw attention to your event!

“Girls Trip”Event Idea: This female-driven film is the perfect opportunity to host a “Ladies Night” in partnership with a variety of organizations on campus, including your campus’ Women’s Center and sororities.

Promo Idea: Utilize our free, customizable promotional materials to hand out and leave inside residence halls, sororities, student spaces and the Women’s Center.

“ Detroit” Event Idea: Partner with your school’s diversity orgs to discuss the history of the racially-charged 12th Street Riot and Algiers Motel incident, as well as the parallels between those events and the events of today.

Promo Idea: The main characters in this film include members of an R&B group. Ask a similar singing group on your campus to perform short concerts in the days leading up to the screening.

“Dunkirk”Event Idea: Invite a history professor to discuss the actual Battle of Dunkirk during World War II and how it lead to the defense and evacuation of British and Allied forces in Europe.

Promo Idea: Make DIY One Direction face masks then pass out flyers around campus!

“Atomic Blonde”Event Idea: Challenge attendees to get out of a high-risk situation alive – just like MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton – by partnering with another student activities club to build an escape room on campus.

Promo Idea: While tabling for the movie screening, have students play a simple game to win “Atomic Blonde”-branded aviators – a favorite of Lorraine’s.

Take a page out of their playbook by finding organizations at your school to help enhance your next movie event!

“ We showed ‘Spectre’ and held a black tie event. The director and his committee created invites attached to bow ties to hand out in the quad prior to the event. Marketing also suggested to the students to dress to impress. The set up of the event had a casino/James Bond feel, which included a photo booth with props that reflected the movie. The food and drinks included a mocktail bar area, and a table of assorted cheeses, crackers and fruit!”

“ IT”Event Idea: Take a lighthearted approach to the clown theme and put on a low-key carnival for students before the screening!

Promo Idea: The obvious idea is to rent a clown costume and meander around campus – just try not to be too scary!

“ The Hitman’s Bodyguard”

Event Idea: Teach attendees how to protect themselves, for when Ryan Reynold’s isn’t there to save the day, by having a self-defense instructor come give a lesson before the screening.

Promo Idea: Blast Whitney Houston’s famous ballad, “I Will Always Love You,” on repeat while you table – people won’t be able to resist coming over to learn why.

“Kidnap”Event Idea: Take a more serious approach with your theme for this event by focusing on safety. Partner with campus security to share a wide-range of tips on staying safe, both on and off campus.

Promo Idea: Use caution tape to embellish your space while tabling.

“ Our best movie event was our Halloween double feature, which we showed on our lawn. We had a Disney Halloween movie first, an intermission with pizza, and ended with a scary movie. We also served popcorn, soda, and coffee all night. This was the night before Family Day, and I was told that parents made comments about how nice it was to see students watching a movie, on blankets, on our front lawn.”

HalloweenBreak out the scares and frights before Halloween night with a double feature of “Annabelle” and “Annabelle: Creation.” If you really want to terrify attendees, have a few volunteers dress up like a sinister doll and pop up into the crowd at random times throughout the screening.

CAMPUSSpotlight

Indiana Tech is no stranger to success when it comes to their on-campus movie program. Each semester, the schools sees, on average, anywhere from 75 to 200 students in attendance at each of their screenings. But the secret to their success is actually pretty simple: they keep every aspect of their movie program inclusive to reach each and every type of student and interest on campus.

It all starts with the basics, like time and date. Their new release screenings used to only take place on the first Friday of each month with two showings, in order to accommodate commuter students who would stay on campus a few extra hours to make the

early showing before heading home. However, when they realized how many student athletes were having to miss screenings due to their busy weekend schedules, the school added a screening on weekdays.

Inclusivity is evident when looking at their schedule, as well. The school orders everything from animated, family-friendly films to jump-out-of-your-seat horror titles to exhilarating action flicks to satisfy a wide range of interests.

Beyond the basics, Indiana Tech takes an inclusive approach to their promotion and activities. It’s important to the school that non-traditional students attend on-campus events just as often as the traditional student.

To make that happen, Student Life started a program only for commuter students called “Commuter Coffee Carts” to surprise them

with free coffee, orange juice, donuts and more throughout the year. And they use this program to promote movie showings and other events on campus. They always stock the cart

with handbills featuring the semester movie schedule – which they finalize months ahead of time to make it easier for non-traditional students and faculty to plan to attend the events.

And to really draw in non-traditional students and community members, Indiana Tech always incorporates a variety of programming. One of their regular movie series events is titled, “Bring Your Kid…” in which they feature an animated film and activities kids will enjoy, like life-size cutouts for the perfect photo opportunity or coloring stations. For a screening of “Inside Out,” Indiana Tech made a “Memory Maker” station so kids could make their own “memories” out of cookies with colored frosting and sprinkles.

“ Personally inviting commuter students always goes a long way because it makes them feel more welcome to attend the events and movies.”

– Devin StoneIndiana Tech’s Student Life Movie Dude

For schools hoping to improve non-traditional student engagement at on-campus events, Devin Stone, Indiana Tech’s Student Life Movie Dude, has this to say: “Figuring out a method of interaction that gives you the most face-time with commuter students is key. Personally inviting commuter students always goes a long way because it makes them feel more welcome to attend the events and movies.”

CAMPUSSpotlight

Bradley University’s ACBU Cinema Program demonstrates the pure power of branding through their campus movie program.

“ACBU, in general, stands out from other campus organizations because we’re the premiere event planning organization on campus,” according to Jacqueline Myers, the activities council president at Bradley University. Myers adds that offering a unique movie experience on campus has been such a success because it allows students to see movies that have just been in theaters in a comfortable place with their friends without having to leave campus.

With all movie events happening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, students have the

chance to come to the movie screening that best fits their busy schedules without having to worry about money, rides or even snacks. And because the screenings are part of a series, students always know the exact location, date and time of these free student events.

This same time, same place consistency of the program keeps attendance strong and the events familiar. “Having a brand just really helps the students understand that once they go to one ACBU event and have a positive experience,

they’re going to continually have a positive experience,” Myers said.

“What’s nice about having it in the same location, on the same days of the week and

Bradley University ACES MOVIE SERIES BRANDING

“ Anything that can make them say why is [this] here and make them want to look into it is key for promoting any event.”

at the same time is that it’s one less thing for people to remember,” states Katherine Folan, a sophomore communications major who also works with ACBU.

The program also specializes in creative reminders because, according to Folan, “a piece of paper in someone’s mailbox is more likely to be thrown away.” While they do still rely on traditional advertising methods like posters, they tie their promotional plan to the movies they’re showing to keep their series fresh and exciting.

For example, when ACBU showed “The Good Dinosaur” they passed out little dinosaurs with movie information stapled to them that grew when placed in water. For “Suicide Squad” they labeled pieces of bubblegum with “Harley Quinn Bubble Gum” to get people’s attention and remind them another free movie event is coming up. When they screened “Gravity,” floating astronauts decorated the student center to grab attention.

For anyone looking to successfully brand their own movie series, Myers has one great piece of advice: “Anything that can make them say why is [this] here and make them want to look into it is key for promoting any event.”
