Resources New Ads Kick off: 2016 Tips From Former Smokers Campaign A brand‐new series of emotionally powerful ads kick off the fifth year of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign . Beginning January 25, the ads will run consecutively for 20 weeks on television, radio, billboards, online, and in magazines and newspapers. A specific focus of these new ads includes smokers suffering from heart disease, tooth loss, depression, and COPD. A plethora of resources and new communication tools for mental health, dental, and health care professionals and pharmacists have also been added to their website , along with inspirational stories of men and women whose lives were changed forever by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Also, in honor of Black History Month, this page highlights the stories of African Americans along with additional educational information. The campaign first launched in 2012. Since then, the campaign has motivated 1.64 million smokers to make a quit attempt, about 100,000 U.S. smokers are expected to stay quit for good, more than 6 million nonsmokers talked with friends and family about the dangers of smoking, and an estimated 4.7 million nonsmokers recommended cessation services to their friends and family to help them quit. New Ads Kick off:2016 Tips From Former Smokers Campaign

A brand‐new series of emotionally powerful ads kick off the fifthyear of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "TipsFrom Former Smokers" campaign. Beginning January 25, the adswill run consecutively for 20 weeks on television, radio,billboards, online, and in magazines and newspapers.

A specific focus of these new ads includes smokers suffering from heart disease, toothloss, depression, and COPD. A plethora of resources and new communication tools formental health, dental, and health care professionals and pharmacists have also beenadded  to their website, along with inspirational stories of men and women whoselives were changed forever by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.  Also, inhonor of Black History Month, this page highlights the stories of African Americansalong with additional educational information.

Health Population

Kentucky is the latest state to join the other 12 SAMHSA‐SCLC leadership academystates to complete a summit focused on tobacco control and behavioral health.Together, partners agreed on setting a goal to reduce smoking among Kentuckianswith poor mental health and Kentuckians who binge drink each by 20% by 2020.Currently, Kentucky is convening regularly within their formed strategy committees ontreatment in facilities, provider education, policy, education and training, peersupport, data, and marketing. Read the full action plan and learn more about theLeadership Academies on our website. Back to top 

Honoring Margaret (Peggy) Walsh

Margaret (Peggy) Walsh, a renowned dental hygienist,tobacco control expert, and professor at the UCSF DentalSchool died January 23, 2016 at the age of 69 after acourageous three year battle against her illness. Peggywas a tireless crusader on behalf of reducing the use oforal tobacco products in order to improve oral health,receiving many grants for educational interventions andparticipating in spring training education and oralexaminations of baseball players. For the SmokingCessation Leadership Center Peggy was instrumental inforging our first professional partnership‐with the American Dental HygienistsAssociation‐from which emerged the then novel but now established "Ask, Advise,Refer" pathway as a route to refer smokers to telephonic quitlines. Read more.

Announcements  Interested in gaining experience in FDA Tobacco Regulatory Science? This regulatoryscience fellowship is a collaborative program between the FDA Center for TobaccoProducts (CTP) and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). It is designed for mid‐career professionals to gain experience and expertise to further define and developthe field of regulatory science as it relates to the regulation of tobacco products andFDA's authorities under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Readmore information. Deadline for applications is March 1st, 2016.

 In celebration of African American History month, SCLC is hosting a webinar onFebruary 17th, "Reducing Tobacco Use among African Americans and Youth: What'sMenthol Got To Do With It?". African Americans have the highest rate of hypertensionof all ethnic groups in the U.S. With the tendency to develop high blood pressureearlier in life, this then also places the population at higher risk for heart disease. Bothare smoking attributable diseases. We are honored to have Dr. Phillip Gardner as ourwebinar presenter.  He has lectured around the country on African American healthdisparities and smoking of menthol cigarettes in the Black community. To register forthis webinar, please click here.

Smoking Cessation Campaign Highlight Run to Quit is a new 10‐week program in Canada that supportssmokers to quit smoking by taking up running while using aspecific step by step method. Run to Quit combines various tools

Achieving Health Equity in Tobacco Control  In response to the 50th anniversary of the Surgeon General's report on smoking andhealth, SCLC and other organizations are coordinating efforts to achieve health equityand eliminate tobacco‐related disparities. This report highlights statistics and otherfacts about how smoking disproportionately affects the poor, homeless people, racialminorities, and those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse disorders.Access the full report.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Centerfor Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY)2016 Targeted Capacity Expansion‐Peer‐to‐Peer (Short Title: TCE‐PTP) grants.  Thepurpose of this program is to expand and enhance service capacity through theprovision of peer recovery support services for those individuals with substance usedisorders (SUDs) and their family members.  Please visit SAMHSA's websitefor more information. Deadline February 16, 2016.  Drug Free Communities (DFC) has provided a grant opportunity for applicants fromcommunity‐based coalitions addressing youth substance use that have never receiveda DFC grant; or have previously received a DFC grant, but experienced a lapse infunding; or have concluded the first five‐year funding cycle and are applying for asecond five‐year funding cycle.  Applicants must meet all Statutory EligibilityRequirements. Please visit SAMHSA's website to apply. Deadline March 18, 2016.
