Some of you have noticed. Some have even commented. Thank you for that. Since November I have been diligently working to become the incredible shrinking pastor. After several years of losing 20 pounds and gaining 30 pounds a year I finally reached a point where I knew that I had to do something. I had to do something major. And I had to do something that would last. My first goal was losing 20 pounds by Christmas—so I signed up for a program here in town, hoping that my

congregational Christmas gift would cover it. It did. I signed up for an 18 month program of guidance and supervision. Lasting change takes a long time. Fighting gravity is hard. So far, so good. As I lost a few pounds I had a renewed willingness to exercise. I begin most days by walking before breakfast. I am not as embarrassed to go to the gym as I used to be. I want to play basketball again. Maybe even run again. Who knows? For now, I’m just taking it one day at a time. So far, the program is working for me. It isn’t rocket science. Mostly it is just math. Our bodies require energy to function. If we don’t get enough energy from the foods we eat we will draw upon the reserves we store up with two bowls of Blue Bell before bed. Over time, if we eat less calories than we need, we will lose weight. That is the math part. But that means absolutely nothing without what it takes to actually do it. What I’ve been learning about what it takes to actually do it feels to me like a refresher course in the basics of healthy spirituality. I need a plan. I need to include diet, exercise, prayer, and support from others. I need to record everything that goes into my mouth in writing. I need to report in several times a week to people who hold me accountable and offer me guidance. I need to take all of this one day at a time. With all of that in place and working, I can remain willing to do it one more day. So far so good. Which brings me back now to our life together at Faith Lutheran Church. As Beth Bruce reports, we are now engaged in learning how to do our governance in a slightly different way. In that we will draw upon many of the same insights that I am applying to myself—have a plan, put it in writing, choose reasonable goals, get support, build in accountability. I trust that God is leading us in this and we will figure it out. I know that, when it comes to my own body, I had to come to a place where I decided that enough was enough. One of my friends, also working to get more healthy, said to me on the phone, “I now realize that I have eaten enough cheeseburgers in my lifetime that I don’t need any more. I know how they taste. I know what they do to me. I’ve had enough of them. It is time to move on.” If nothing changes, nothing changes. How much time do we spend encouraging one another as fellow Christians to be as engaged in the faith as we need to be? I was OK with over-eating, under-exercising, and gaining weight for a long time. It wasn’t good. It wasn’t healthy. It wasn’t hopeful. But I settled for it. Not anymore for me. But how about for our congregation? Are we feeling too settled? Isn’t it time to move forward again? It was good to spend Sundays in January reviewing our five aspirational mission motives. But moving from aspiring to those values to achieving them is what really matters. We have to want it. We have to be willing to work on what we want. And we need a plan, support, and accountability to get us there. All of our ministry teams have annual plans. They know what they want to do. It is in writing. They are shared goals. We want to focus this year on raising our average Sunday morning attendance in worship and learning. Every team, in addition to the rest of what they will do, will be focused on those common goals. Maybe we will get there or maybe we won’t but working together to try in a focused way is a new thing for us. God bless us as we work.

Prayer Corner - My Heart is Set on Having Joy by Peggy Porter

Read 1 Kings 8:54-61 and Psalm 119:105-112 “Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.” (Psalm 119:111) Did you know that it is okay to pursue joy? Did you know that it is essential? Consider this

statement: “Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to perform your statues forever, to the end.” (Psalm 119:111-112) The psalmist is saying, “My heart is set on having joy.” Joy is the product of having a relationship with God through Jesus. But it is also the aim. God is our heritage – our prize.

And in knowing God, we experience the deepest of all joy. With the psalmist, we can set our hearts, make it our aim, to have joy – to have God. How can this be? Jesus Christ has made it possible for God to incline our hearts (set them) upon God’s self (1 Kings 8:58). Thus, the pursuit of joy is essential to the Christian’s relationship with Jesus. We usually grit our teeth and try to submit to God’s processes of making us holy. But the gospel says that in all things God is acting for our joy, for God is acting for God’s glory. Let us desire joy in God and rejoice that it is possible to do so! Pray: Father, incline our hearts to you and set them upon your great glory. Grant us to desire joy! Amen.

Hello fellow disciples! I am so pleased to be serving our Faith Lutheran Church community as Church Council President this year. We are already off to a great start, with much to accomplish this year. My goal with these messages will be to give you a brief update as to what is going on with our Church Council and primarily to share updates on the progress of our experimental year with the new governance ministry model which we started practicing in January.

In January, we gathered over 30 of our lay and staff leadership in Galveston for our annual leadership retreat. The retreat was held at the new Lutherhill Zion Retreat Center, which Faith generously supported via the capital campaign over a year ago. It was symbolic that we were one of the first church groups to utilize the new retreat center. Also this was the first time we have expanded the former Church Council retreat to include all members of ministry teams who were willing to come. This awesome group of committed leaders came together representing both the Church Council and each of the ministry teams to spend an evening and day reflecting on priorities and discerning goals for this year. We did important work to ensure that the group were on the same page as to how we will measure progress and set goals which will impact and require the ministry teams to work together closely. The time included sharing our backgrounds, life history, and for several of us, our faith stories. This was a wonderful step forward in building the community and discipleship Jesus intends. The Church Council is also very focused on refining policies and documentation, as well as revisions to the bylaws, in order to formalize our new governance model during this year. Doing so will ensure that the important way of managing our responsibilities and ministries continues well beyond this year. I invite each of you to join us for our upcoming congregational meeting on February 12. We will provide a further update and timeline to progress the policy work and bylaw revisions. We will also be sharing some important priorities for our congregation, and looking for help and support with those initiatives. Please join us to learn more!

Faith Mission Fund by Brian Taylor, Mission Fund Team

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:34) Did you know there is a missional fund at Faith that is designed to help people in need? Well, there is and it’s called the Mission Fund. The great thing about the fund is that it gathers gifts that keep on giving throughout the life of the church, as only the interest will be used for missional purposes. I know what you’re thinking, “How can I be a part of this long term, people helping fund?” Well the answer is simple. Through your gifts. You can do what I did and write the Mission Fund into your will or you can make cash and other donations, which we’ll highlight throughout the year. Remember, this is a long-term way to help folks, and all gifts will be recognized in the Faith Legacy Circle.

Congregational Meeting February 12 @ 12:00 PM Faith Center On February 12 we will meet in the Faith Center to have lunch, approve the 2016 Annual Report, and discuss any other congregational topics for 2017.

Greetings! I’ve been working with the Stewardship Team for three years and we are always asking ourselves “What is stewardship?” I’ve come to realize that stewardship means many things. God expects us to be good stewards of all of our blessings, such as our health, our families, our friends, our natural resources, and our financial resources. I think stewardship is also about “giving back.” Giving back to God and also to people who need our help.

We’ve all been helped by others during our lives and we should take every opportunity we have to help others. Unfortunately, we get so busy and we load our schedules up so much that we often don’t give ourselves enough time to give back our time and talents. So I ask myself, “Am I considering my time as a resource that I should be a better steward of?” “Do I save time each month for doing work in the community for my neighbors or co-workers?” What I could do doesn’t have to be a “big” thing, but something small that may mean a great deal to someone else. Do I spend too much time watching sports or other television? Do I spend too much time playing video games? Do I spend too much time on Facebook? These are things I wrestle with and I’m sure most people do. I’m currently serving as the Leader of the Stewardship Team and Jon Holmes is our Co-Leader. If you would like to discuss any aspect of stewardship or anything else, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Let Us Pray: Dear Lord, thank you for our faith and all of our other countless blessings. We understand that

we don’t always use our time in ways that please you. Please help us to discipline ourselves to use our time

wisely and to use our time to help in our community by serving others in need. Please help us to follow Jesus’

example and use our time to serve others and our church. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Stewardship Update by Brian Taylor, Stewardship Team Leader

Ash Wednesday March 1 Ash Wednesday begins our Lenten journey that will ultimately take us to Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our Ash Wednesday liturgy, including the imposition of ashes, will be held at 11:45 AM and 7:00 PM. Ashes are a rich symbol rooted in ancient customs and practices of biblical people. The Bible speaks of using ashes as a sign of penitence. Ashes also suggest judgement and humiliation, as well as cleansing and purification.

Zion Retreat Center Grand Opening and Dedication Sunday, February 26, 3:00 - 6:00 PM On February 26 the Zion Retreat Center on Galveston Island (6910 Yucca Drive, Galveston, Texas 77551) will have its grand opening and dedication. Open House is 3 - 6 PM. Dedication Service begins at 4 PM. All are welcome.

In February 2015, I announced the expansion of our Mother’s Day Out program from a two day per week program to a five day per week program. At that time, we knew we wanted to be able to serve more families during the week, but we were not sure if we’d be able to fill the available spots (and cover our budget). I admit that I was nervous and prayed that this was the direction that God had for our program and community. There was some push back from members of our community who wanted the program to remain the same.

Well, our prayers and these questions have been answered in a BIG WAY! As of January 2017, under the guidance of Ms. Jill, our MDO Director, we have 85 children enrolled in the program and 118 on the waiting list. We also have a stable staff of qualified, caring teachers who are committed to our children and their families. We have updated policies and procedures that ensure that our children are cared for, prepared socially to go on to “big school,” and kept safe each day. We’ve introduced two school day enrichment classes (Music and Stretch-n-Grow) and have invited our friends from Soccer Shots to come in and do their “mini” program with our MDO students. There’s already a waiting list for this program, and we’re hoping that the coach will agree to lead another session. We’ve improved communication with parents using our weekly email newsletter. I have been able to watch the development of this program as a mother and as the Director, and I am very proud of how far this program has come! I also look forward to what God has next for this awesome program. One benefit of the MDO program’s expansion is that MDO has become a significant feeder school for our Day School. We have increased from have one or two children from MDO at the Day School in 2012 to having 21 currently on our waiting list. In early January, we welcomed several MDO families to our second Day School Open House. As we enter registration season, we anticipate filling up many of our openings with MDO students. These families receive priority on our waitlist and are excited to join our program as the next step in their child’s education. While enrollment numbers and waiting lists are not the most important factors in the life of our school, I do like to share these statistics with you as one measure of our school’s health. And as these numbers indicate, we are healthy and growing well.

2016 Year in Review by Dr. Clayton Faulkner, Director of Worship, Music, and Technology

2016 was a very successful year for the worship and music ministry at Faith. We did some very great things and I am excited to remember and recap all of them with you.

The skeleton that holds together the worship ministry at Faith is the Worship Team (formerly the Board of Worship). It is a pleasure to lead and work with this group of people who care about the details of worship (banners, bread, and baptisms). Our coordinators each lead their respective

teams and keep them trained and scheduled: Carol Strickland and Yu Cao (acolytes and crucifers), Karen Elsen (assisting ministers), Barbara McDowell (lectors and communion assistants), Roxy Funchess (ushers), LaRae Nelson (decorations), and Joann Welton, Tina Wood, and Betty Dossey (altar guild).

The Worship Team set and accomplished several important goals in 2016, in addition to the continual work of training new volunteers and maintaining the rotation schedule. First, we commissioned a local artist, Thomas Perry, to create new communion ware for our Chinese worship service. Second, we made upgrades to several pieces of worship technology, including two new projectors and screens in the sanctuary, an additional video camera for the live stream, and a new sound system in the Fellowship Hall. Third, we implemented the use of a new online tool called Planning Center Online to keep our many volunteers up to date with their schedules and reminders.

The music ministry at Faith continued its growth as well. Alan Balius led the Faith Choir, Handbell Choir, played the organ for Heritage worship, and accompanied Faith Alive! Band on keyboard. Adrian Joseph, a former American Idol contestant and 6TEN worship leader, led music with us for over a year. We continued to bridge together our Chinese and English speaking communities through Combined Worship services. We also released “Songs of Faith, Volume II” in 2016. This is a 12 track music recording that features all the musical ensembles at Faith and continues in the line of the Volume I recording that released in 1979!

I also coordinate the web ministry at Faith. Our church website (FaithBellaire.org) had over 30,000 page views by over 12,000 visitors last year. The Faith Schools website (FaithDaySchool.org) had over 10,000 views by over 2,000 visitors last year. The Faith House website (FaithHouseHouston.org) had over 7,000 page views by over 2,500 visitors last year. The live stream of our Sunday morning worship services in the sanctuary had an average of 10 people viewing online every week.

Here are a few more highlights for me:

My wife Kate and I led Financial Peace University in February and March 2016. Many couples outside the membership of Faith attended.

I designed worship and led a team of musicians for our Gulf Coast Synod Assembly in May 2016.

We hosted our fourth annual TUNE UP worship band gathering for contemporary worship musicians and techs in August 2016.

I curated the art and created backdrop video loops for the ELCA’s Churchwide Assembly that took place in New Orleans in August 2016.

I was part of a writing team that created a new guide called, “Can We Talk: Engaging Worship and Culture” which was published by the ELCA in August 2016.

We launched the First Steps @ Faith catechumenate in August 2016. This is an adult discipleship-training program that has 7 candidates enrolled currently!

Last year was a terrific year! I am so blessed to be in my fifth year of ministry at Faith and I look forward to the rest of 2017 and beyond.

Lessons I Learned at the Food Pantry by Rev. Junfeng Tan, Associate Pastor

Jesus says, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” (Matthew 25:35) A group of folks from Faith get to do just that on a monthly basis. Our congregation’s Food Pantry team usually volunteers at the Food Pantry of CCSC (Christian Community Service Center) on a Saturday. The first Saturday that we were assigned to serve in 2017 fell on January 7. It was a cold day. When our team arrived at 8:45 AM, the temperature was just above 30 degrees. No clients came during the first hour. That was very unusual. Maybe the cold weather was keeping everyone at home? Maybe because it was the first weekend right after the holidays? Most folks

probably do not need food assistance. We were wondering whether we would ever see a client that day. To our joy and surprise, the first family showed up at 10 o’clock. After that, people walked in continuously. We were busy all the way until we closed the door at noon. The lesson I learned: poverty is real; the need is great. There are many families in Houston that need help to feed their children. It is a privilege and a duty for us as followers of Jesus to lend people a helping hand. As an interviewer at the Food Pantry, I am humbled to be given the opportunity to ask clients what life events and circumstances have led them to the Food Pantry. Some are

employed, many others are un-employed,under-employed, or retired. I interviewed a white

collar worker who wore a nice suit and tie and a badge from a well-known company. I talked with refugees and immigrants from Iraq, Pakistan, China, Nigeria, Sudan, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and many other countries. I once met a Mexican woman with a three-year-old girl. (Lets call her Camila, not her real name). Camila brought with her a temporary Texas ID card which will expire in March 2017. She also showed me her husband’s temporary Texas ID card. What hardships had Camila and her husband endured in their native land? How did they end up in Houston? What are they going to do when their ID cards expire? The lesson I learned: hope is real, people are resilient. If I had time to listen to the full life story of Camila, I believe I would be deeply moved and inspired by the courage and strength of her and her husband. She deserves my admiration and respect, not just my sympathy. I cannot imagine what I would do if I were in her shoes. I pray that her hope for a new future in the U.S. will become true someday. The first time I interviewed Catherine (not her real name) last September, she appeared to be tense, unhappy, and cranky. When I explained to her that we were all volunteers and still learning to do the paperwork on the computer, she said with a clear and strong voice, “Then you should raise enough money and hire full time, professionally trained workers to staff the pantry, not volunteers.” I held my tongue and did not reason with her. I met Catherine again in October. When I asked her to sign a paper that was required of every client, she said, “I do not understand you. Your English is terrible.” I took a deep breath and said to her, “I apologize, madam. Please read the paper yourself and you’ll understand why you need to sign it.” When I saw Catherine in November, I said to myself, “Not her again.” Since other interviewers were busy, I had no choice but to invite her to my table. Much to my surprise, she looked like a different person. This time, she was happy, friendly, and warm. She smiled at me and even said some funny things to make me laugh. What happened? I have no clue. The lesson I learned: people can change; my opinion of others has to change, too. Much of our fear, anxiety, suspicion, and mistrust has roots in our past experience. Quite often our ability to make positive changes in others is quite limited, if not completely non-existent. But that does not mean we have no role to play in another’s life. Paul says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2) Sometimes to bear another person’s burden simply means to hold your tongue and your temper. P.S. If you haven’t volunteered at the Food Pantry, please consider becoming a volunteer. It will be a very rewarding experience.

Souper Bowl of Caring by Suzanne Girouard, Social Ministry Team Leader

Join the team on Sunday, February 5! HEY FOOTBALL FANS...It's almost here: SUPER BOWL LI hosted by the city of Houston. Let's show our pride and love by either writing a check to CCSC Food Pantry (Souper Bowl of Caring) or fill a grocery bag full of groceries The idea of the Souper Bowl of Caring program began in 1990 by a youth group from Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Exactly 22 churches in the area participated the first year and collected canned food plus donations to give directly to their local charities. That year they raised $5,700! In 2016 more than $10,501,352 was raised for soup kitchens, food banks, and other charities. In the Houston area last year $2,345,254 was raised for local charities. So now is the time for Faith Lutheran Church, along with many other Houston groups, churches, and schools, to make donations of non-perishable food items and/or money through Faith's Annual Souper Bowl of Caring campaign. To participate please fill one or more grocery bags with non-perishable food items and return them on Sunday, February 5 between services. Like last year we will have a friendly team competition between Heritage, Chinese, and The Gathering worshipers for the most items brought and the most money donated. So mark your bags as “Team Heritage,” “Team Chinese,” or “Team Gathering” and write the number of items in your bag on the outside of it. If you choose to make a monetary donation, there will be designated soup pots available in the lobby before and after each service for donations. Checks should be made to Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) or Faith Lutheran Church. Be sure to write “Souper Bowl” on the memo line along with your team (Heritage, Chinese, or The Gathering).

In a related subject, the Food Pantry Team is looking for volunteers for one Saturday a month to help CCSC Emergency Services Food Pantry for three hours. CCSC is located at the Gethsemane campus of St. Luke's United Methodist Church (6856 Bellaire Blvd). We share our time with needy families, helping with groceries and items for personal hygiene, as well as provide information about where they can find local resources for employment, medical care, and other services. Volunteering is more than serving the poor. It is also about becoming more generous and faithful people that God wants us to become. If you know someone who would like more information please contact Janis Frnka at [email protected] or 831-794-6308.
