Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County
and Delaware County?
Celebrate with an Oneg
Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom, for example our next Friday night dinner? They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

EASY MONEY!!!
One of our goals this year is to increase the amount of money the syna-
gogue earns through two programs that are ABSOLUTELY FREE for
you to use.
Number 1: Acme and Giant Scrip
Do you do some or all of your grocery shopping at Acme or Giant? If so,
there is an incredibly EASY way for you to help Or Shalom, and it won’t
cost you a thing. Here’s how.
Rather than going to the store and paying by cash or credit/debit card, buy
Acme or Giant gift cards from Or Shalom in increments of $50, and then
spend them like cash at the store. Or Shalom makes 5% on these gift
cards, and it does not cost you a thing because you would be shopping
there anyway! Please contact the office or Paula Blaustein directly to
purchase the cards.
Number 2: Amazon Smile
Do you shop online at Amazon? If so, click on smile.amazon.com and
choose Congregation Or Shalom as your preferred charity. Then, every
time you shop at Amazon, the synagogue makes money. And again, it
doesn’t cost you a thing because you would be shopping there anyway!
Here is a more complete description of the Amazon program.
AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your
favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you.
When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low
prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Ama-
zon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the
purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. The
AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from
your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. The purchase price is the amount
paid for the item minus any rebates and excluding shipping & handling,
gift-wrapping fees, taxes, or service charges.
So please, if you’re already shopping at Acme, Giant, or Amazon, c
ontinue to do so, and you can help Or Shalom at the same time!
B’Shalom,
Stuart Lurie, President

Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner
The Torah commandment most often repeated is the mitzvah regarding
our treatment of the stranger. The Torah commands us to love the
stranger. The Torah commands us not to oppress the stranger; the
stranger is included together with the orphan and widow in our obligations
to be charitable. Finally, unlike most mitzvot, the Torah includes a rea-
son: “you shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of
Egypt.
The Statue of Liberty with its inscription by Jewish poet Emma Lazarus is
a Jewish symbol of our gratitude for the many blessings and opportunities
afforded our people in this land. In 1880 there were but 250,000 Jews in
the United States. By 1920 that number had grown to over two and a half
million, and a great Jewish community was born.
As a Jew it distresses me to hear the disparaging rhetoric directed at 21st
century immigrants and refugees. Whether it be a presidential candidate
referring to Mexican immigrants as rapists, or the suggestion we cannot
even bring in Syrian toddlers. If terrorists have the goal of instilling terror
into the hearts of Americans, such sentiments indicate their success. We
are an immigrant nation, and to step on the hands of those on the rungs
below us even as we climb the ladder of success is a disservice to
everything America stands for.
Certainly we must be zealous in guarding our borders. I understand
there is some risk in opening our borders to even properly vetted Syrian
refugees, but the risk of closing our hearts, our minds and our borders
pales in comparison to the risk of losing sight of what our country is all
about.

From the Education Director Na’ama Yarden
It is a good Time to Count our Blessings and accomplishments and face the challenges
As we entering the year of 2016 I would like to take this opportunity to talk about our Religious School.
Accomplishments and Blessings:
As a small synagogue (that can), we are happy that our school is functioning well. We have 42 students,
gathered in six classes and taught by eight wonderful teachers. Our attendance rate is excellent and we are very
proud of our families who take Jewish Education so seriously. Many synagogues are having a problem with
attendance. The fact that we almost always have close to 100% attendance is making it possible for us to stay a
vibrant school. I want to thank all the families that make it happen and that instill in their kids the importance of
Jewish Education and the commitment of coming to school on a regular basis.
Our new Israeli program: “Kachol Lavan” is doing great! We have 18 kids in it and we are hoping for more.
We are working together with the families to build a strong program that will answer to the different aspects of
this community. We are constantly thinking of different ways to bridge between the Israeli kids and the Or
Shalom members. We recently got a nice Grant from our Federation to help us develop this program.
The Confirmation/High School program with Congregation Beth El Ner Tamid (CBENT) that we joined this
year is a new experience for us and we are happy that six kids of our graduates are part of it. Once a month
they come to Or Shalom and learn here.
This year we planned three joint programs with CBENT religious school. The first one was very successful
and both communities are working well together. The others will be on Tu Bishvat and Purim.
Our Education Committee (including the Rabbi and Stuart, the president) made out of wonderful dedicated
people which are always very helpful with all that we need to make the school a better place.
Overall the students, parents and teachers are happy with our program, we see many smiles and hear positive
feedback from our community, which is great to know! Please feel free to come and let us know of anything
you feel, think, want to share. Our door is open to all kinds of feedback.
Challenges that we face:
We have to keep thinking creatively how to bring more new families and students to our school. I am asking
all members to be good ambassadors and try to invite new families to come visit us. Or, just give us the con-
tact information and we will reach out to them.
Our budget is limited and we are constantly thinking of ways to both save and raise more money. If you have
any ideas please share them with us.
One of the biggest educational challenges is how to make the educational experience meaningful and teach
what we want in such a limited time, while making sure that the students are happy to come to school.
I would like to wish our community a Happy and fulfilling 2016.
Let’s keep working together to make our little shul, full of light and peace (Or-light, Shalom –peace)

LAYING IT ON THE LINE: THE INS AND OUTS OF NATURAL GAS PIPELINES
One of the hottest issues in environmental and energy law and liability is hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” for natural gas. While the drilling process itself has garnered
most of the attention, another issue is quickly coming to the forefront — the construction, re-use and operation of intrastate and interstate pipelines that collect, convey and deliver natural gas from the well heads to facilities, ports and end users
located hundreds of miles away. This talk will the background and recent developments related to construction and operation of this new and expanding infrastructure. The talk will be given by Mark L. Freed, an environmental lawyer,
elected municipal official and member of the Governor Wolf's Pipeline Infrastructure Task Force, Local Government Workgroup.

There will be a $10 donation for the bagel and lox brunch.

JEWISH ADOPTION AND FAMILY CARE OPTIONS
Nothing is more tragic than a family torn apart. When a child is removed from their
family, they leave behind what they have known and take with them their fears, anger,
hurt and insecurities. We believe that we can provide one less obstacle in the healing
process by providing a child with a familiar cultural and religious environment. We
believe every child deserves a safe and loving home.

friends and who really understand what they are feeling.
The group will provide activities that will help siblings to identify both the
good and not-so-easy things about having a brother or sister with a
developmental disability, understand more about the different disabilities and
how they can have a more meaningful relationship with their sibling.
