Upper School News

Upper Campus Book Fair

The Book Fair that will take place April 10th—2nd in the Upper Campus Media Center is a very important

event for our school community. It provides free choice reading for our students and raises the money

we use to purchase new materials for the Media Center. Book Fair profits are the only money we have

to support reading programs for students like Battle of the Books. This spring, our goal is to raise our sales by

5% over our 2012 spring sales. Our goal is $4,420!

There are ways you can help us reach our goal: Visit Monday—Friday from 7:30am—5:30pm. Visit during the Community Carnival (April 20th),

10:00am—3:00pm. Visit the online book fair. To find ours, go to

www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/ and click “Find a Fair.”

There will be contests throughout the fair for 5/6 and 7/8 graders. Also, we will be conducting a book drive. Every middle school student that brings a gently-used book to be donated to a teacher’s classroom or Better World Books will be entered into a drawing for a grand

prize.

Museum of the Waxhaws-UA Exhibit

Over sixty 6th and 7th grade students have been chosen to be included in a special exhibit at the

Museum of the Waxhaws for the month of April.

UA Day April 13th, 10:00am—4:00pm (refreshments served) Price: $5 (Includes UA exhibit along with all others) All middle school students that attend will receive a

homework pass (5th—8th grade)

We are in need of cookies and lemonade for refreshments by April 12th. Please contact Stacey Blair

if you can help out!

SAT Prep Classes

Union Academy will be offering SAT Prep classes to help students prepare for the spring SAT's. April 13th, 20th & 27th, 8:30am - 12:00pm

Important Graduation Information Parents: We are in the process of creating a

PowerPoint presentation of all seniors to be shown at the graduation ceremony. We are in need of three

pictures of your child at different stages during their academic years, Kindergarten through High School. We would prefer to receive pictures electronically. Please email them to [email protected]. If that is not

possible, however, you may send pictures to the UC Guidance Office. (Please make sure each picture has your child’s name printed on the back.) They will be

returned after they have been processed for the presentation. If you have questions, please contact the

Guidance Office. Deadline: Friday, April 26th

IMPORTANT: New Upper Campus Carpool Policy

The safety of our students, parents, faculty and staff is a primary concern for Union Academy. Continued efforts are being made in order to provide a higher level of safety on our two campuses. As part of these efforts the following

changes will be made to the traffic patterns at the upper campus beginning April 8, 2013.

Morning Drop-Off The center drive between the paved lot and the front gravel lot will be closed on the school side at the

crosswalk until 8:15am each morning. The exit from the front gravel lot will be closed until 8:15am each morning. Student drivers will now need to drive around the loop in order to enter the HS gravel lot by the Gym. Anyone exiting from the paved and front gravel lots will need to follow the one way traffic pattern around the

loop to exit. Please pull as far forward up to the 2nd crosswalk (at the corner of the building).

Afternoon Carpool The following areas will be closed at 2:30pm each day and will not open until 3:30pm.

The center drive between the paved lot and the front gravel lot Both entrances to the front gravel lot Exit from the front gravel lot

HOW TO TALK ABOUT BULLYING

Help kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell kids bullying is unacceptable, and make sure they know how to get help.

Keep the lines of communication open. Check in with kids often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.

Encourage kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost con-fidence, help kids make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.

Model how to treat others with kindness and respect.

Scrip is a year-round fundraiser where you purchase gift cards. Union Academy purchases Scrip gift cards at

discount between 2-15%. Families buy the Scrip gift cards at face value—UA keeps the difference.

Retailers include: Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Lowe’s, Chick-Fil-A, Olive Garden, Gap, Amazon, and 100’s more.

Last year, total sales of $87,000 generated $4,376 of profit. Only 10% of UA families participated! Just imagine, if

only 200 families spend $110/month and our school earns an average of 5% on those purchases, we could make

$15,000 in one year!

How to Order Scrip Gift Cards:

1. Fill out the Scrip order form (found on the Scrip page on the UA website)

2. Attach payment to form and send with your child or drop off at either campus.

3. If cards are available immediately, they will be given to you that day or the next. If cards need to be ordered,

they will be available by the end of the week.
