Commodore’s Corner

Some things are just unavoidable. In October, there is Columbus Day. Halloween is coming. You just can’t get away from these realities. Elections are happening for Fleet 204 this month. Yours truly has been nominated for Commodore for another year. I would prefer to see the office go to someone else. But there I was, Sunday afternoon, just 2 days before the first of October. I go through the check-out at Wegmans and the clerk tells me my total bill is, you guessed it, $204. ( See insert ) That type of omen is just not something you can’t avoid. Fleet 204 Meeting Minutes

September 10, 2019 Submitted by Theresa White, Secretary

After a period of chatter, Commodore Dave Witmer welcomed the 18 attendees, including all of the officers, to Borio’s Restaurant at 7:44 p.m. Commodore Dave called the meeting to order after Bill “Money bags” Whalen finally showed up from the bar. Secretary Report – Fluffy gave the usual report – namely, that last month’s minutes were included in the email sent by newsletter She apologized for the error in meeting time, which was corrected by a second email. Rob Jerry and Herb James moved and seconded to accept the minutes as amended for time. Motion passed. Treasurer Report – Bill Whalen filled us in on the Treasury after the Outing costs. Turns out, we are up a little bit from last year. Rob thought this was reason enough to keep the same slate of officers. The Commodore said that we should not jump the schedule yet and gave a quick smack of his gavel. Despite having money in the bank, the fleet still relies on dues. You should pay them, if you haven’t already. The dues are only $50 per family. Membership is important; please make your check out to Hobie Cat Fleet 204, and mail it to the attention of Bill Whalen, Treasurer, 8254 Honeysuckle Dr., Liverpool, NY 13090. Division Updates-

o We congratulated Ken Knapp on taking the role of Division 16 Chair. He’s still transitioning a few things from Adam Atherton. We had a financial discussion about starting a new division checking account. The general consensus was that he should call Adam for direction

o Ken reported that next year’s North American Championships will be on Sept 14-19 2020 in MI, possibly Travers City. He’ll get the details for us in the future.

o He also put in a plug for Steve Leo’s Hobie Worlds Shirts endeavor. Order ‘em from Steve via email by the deadline if you want them.

o Robbin Mocarski-Longo – HCA Woman’s Rep – Robbin says go sailing! Old Business –

o Andrew Caldwell attended our August meeting as a representative of the NY State Sherriff’s Association Camp for at-risk children. Commodore Dave told him that we would like to help with maintenance of their Hobie fleet. We’ll ask Billy Jeffers to be the point to help with their aging Hobie fleet next year.

o When we last left this story, Adam had been holding on to the fleet printer, but when he moved, Bill Whalen wound up with it. John Harmon suggested that we really don’t need it, and he offered to print our newsletter and booklet for a total cost of $150 (basically materials) on his printer. This opened a discussion of whether we actually need either a booklet or a printer. Rob said that our sponsorship program is all formulated around the

booklet. Katie said that we had roughly 14-15 sponsors in last year’s booklet. If we reworked it to come up with something new to offer the sponsors, we wouldn’t necessarily need either the booklet or the printer. Commodore Dave suggested that perhaps the stickers for the boat could be the basis, with larger or smaller stickers. Tom K suggested an electronic presence, like the website and Facebook page - and even an electronic booklet. Pat Caster said that Rob was right, and that we would need to re-think the situation. Herb motioned that we scrap or sell the printer and go totally green. Rob seconded it. In discussion, Pat C suggested that we offer the printer for sale to the fleet for one month with offers being taken until then [Editor’s Note: See the ad in this newsletter!]. The motion passed with 17 in favor and 1 opposed (because Tom has to be ornery).

o Hooper’s Harbor. Support boats - We want to make sure in the future we have enough on-water support in the future. Rob suggested that we need a committee to organize Hoopers, and organizing the chase boats would be a natural offshoot. Pat C. said that the more pertinent discussion is whether we have enough people to adequately run a regatta - and that means two off-site regattas in addition to Madcatter. Lynn said that there were other people at Hoopers who would, but was uncomfortable with the conditions. Tom said that the people there are not the ones that can help us. Pat B. pointed out that sailing was actually easier than what a chase boat goes through. Katie said that she would be more than happy to volunteer, depending on whether or not she was familiar. Pat C stated that we need to promote our off-sites to make them economically viable. Rob made a motion to table this until after Worlds, when a committee could be established. Pat C seconded it, and this motion carried.

New Business –

o Nominations. All officers were nominated as a slate – so the officers would be the same as they are now. Dave has been a great commodore, and we think that he should continue. He says that he only made only one mistake and that was giving out his address for the Christmas party wrong. Herb tried to negotiate this slate, and no one seemed too adverse to the activity. Elections will be held at the October meeting.

o Purchases – Sharon James said that we should be a timing system. She said that it makes everything on a committee boat run more smoothly. These systems are running $500 or $600. Rob will do some research as to the best one to purchase and will bring it back to us next month.

o Tom Korz said that he would set up the fleet t-shirt. If you want one, give him an order and some money! Tom said that we should pick a 204 shirt night at the Worlds. We should also maybe host a 204 party night, possibly on the first night of the qualifiers. Tom said that the commodore should host it. Commodore Dave said that he’d give us his address [We all know how that turned out in the past!].

o Tom also said that a number of people were going to see the Whitbread movie at the Manlius theatre called “Maiden” about the first all-female team to sail the race.

o Lastly, Tom reported that Susan Korz has been invited to the Onondaga Lake Yacht Club this Thursday at 6:30 to speak on her sailing experiences. Those who want to go to support her are welcome.

o Rob gave a commercial break for South Bay Sails and Kayak at this point. He’s ordering 5 World’s boats, and bringing them back. If anyone wants to buy one, give him a call.

o Bob Longo said that someone put two locks on Tube 27 at Therre’s marina. There was much discussion about this with Mike Siau, but in truth, we’re not really sure about the situation. We hope it works out well.

Past Regatta Updates / Reports –

Oswego – August 17-18 - Oswego, 1 race the first day (due to weather), 5 races the next one. The James gang won. Thanks to Tom and Sue who were the PROs, and to all of the other fleet members who pitched in to make it happen.

Lewes - Herb reported that this event was great – except for the 6.5 hours to get there. Saturday was great wind, but no racing on Sunday due to too much wind. Kevin Walma flipped his wife, Melissa, and she came up smiling. It’s believed that they’re still married. Herb and Sharon got second in the event. Jeff Slavich and Maria also competed.

Saratoga – August 24 – 8 am to 5 pm – The ladies win! Sue Korz and Wicked Steph beat Tom and Erika Korz. A good time was had by all at a very nice yacht club.

CMOR – September 7-8 There were 5 races Saturday

and 3 on Sunday at a beautiful yacht club. Thanks to

CYC for a great regatta! 1st place Billy Jeffers (the score keeper) & Rory Jeffers, Tom Korz & Karen Grisko wound up in 2nd, Sue Korz & Wicked Stephanie O'Connor got 3rd, and Herb & Hondo finished in 4th. Newbie Michelle Dewitt sailed on a Shark with Dom Simetti to place 2nd.

Outing – It was a sedate weekend with no sailing! There were very few winners, but Tom, Mimi, and Hondo were contenders. There were fires and jokes and everyone had a good time.

Future Regattas and Important Dates

This is a date corrected list! Check out the Fleet site for all future regatta dates and locations. Plan now to travel to regattas this fall!

H16/H20 North American Championships BC - Sept 16-20 - Herb and Sharon James are going. Represent 204 well! There are only 3 east coast teams going - so we’re proud that you’re one of them.

Ben Hur – September 21-22

60th Roton Point Multihull Regatta Sept 13, 14 & 15 (Friday is optional) – At this point, 5 Fleet 204 teams are going.

2019 Worlds! Ft. Myers/Sanibel Is. FLORIDA, Nov 1-16. Fleet 204 is sending 33 people to this factory-supplied boat event! Why not you, too?! There are scholarships for YOUTH – see the website.

o Masters (Nov 2-5) o Grand Masters (Nov 6-8) o Great Grand Masters (Nov 6-8) o Women’s (Nov 6-8) o Youth (Nov 6-8)

Safety Report - We don’t really have one, and Mimi wasn’t here to report (we miss you!). But no one has gotten hurt this month, so we hope that we’re doing things right. But at CMOR, Robbin had a migraine and didn’t go out the first day because she didn’t feel well, which is the right thing to do. Making sure that you’re well before you get on the boat is a sensible thing to do. Training Coordinator - Herb said that we know that people are still training for Worlds, it would be great if people could act as chase boat for us. Tom suggested that we spend an hour on the water, and an hour in the gym as our training (Pat C added that an hour in the shower would also be good). Boat speed, and tiller time are key to improving your sailing. Commodore Dave thought Rob moved to adjourn (though it was actually Herb) - and we were about to actually do it, but Dave pointed out that our Nov meeting has to be moved to November 19th because of Worlds. In a shocking development, Rob was unsuccessful in his motion for adjournment. Commodore Dave simply declared the meeting adjourned at 8:57.

Next Meeting is October 8th , 2019 at 7:30 p.m., at Borio’s
