Available in Dual Fuel or All-Gas, the

30” Pro range is another popular model

for NYC kitchens, providing performance

features such as fully-extending self-cleaning

oven racks, reversible wok grates, multiple

oven modes – including self-clean, and LED

bullnose lighting. It can be paired with

either a hood or an above-the-cooktop (ATC)

Advantium speedcooking oven. The ATC

Advantium is available–like the built-in

Most HoMeowNers spend

considerable time choosing everything

for the kitchen, but the paint. The paint

most often considered: the traditional

glossy and durable semi-gloss or gloss

sheen. Sherwin-Williams has changed

tHe Most discerning of clients have new shopping habits when

it comes to remodeling kitchens. They are more involved with the

kitchen remodeling process and they are more conscious of their

Not too long ago, it was the norm for customers to buy down

a notch, says David Lyon of Blackman Plumbing Supply. But now,

Blackman’s showrooms are jam-packed and consumer buying habits

have taken a turn for the better. “Our customers are no longer cutting

Bilotta kitcHeNs’ Mamaroneck showroom continues to create

a fresh ambience filled with vignettes in updated color palettes,

says resident designer Peter Bittner. “Grey—in all shades—is the

new white for all surfaces such as cabinets, backsplashes and

countertops for both traditional and contemporary design,” says

Bittner. “There is also an introduction of metal in unexpected places

in the kitchen, such as door inserts and trim.”

Bittner also sees a soaring popularity for modular cooktop

systems. “You can personalize your cooking surface to get the

best of everything,” he says. “Instead of one 36-inch gas cooktop,

for example, people are able to install smaller 15-inch appliances

combining induction, gas and electric—even a steamer—all on one

surface and in one space.”

Another shift in kitchen design is the increased use of LED

lighting. “LED lighting is essential now for under-cabinet and

in-drawer lighting, toe-kicks and floor lighting.” Bittner explains

that LED lighting lasts significantly longer than halogen and it’s

available in warm or cool tones depending on a homeowner’s

needs.

Regardless of kitchen style, one change has streamlined the

kitchen, leaving more space and less clutter. Bittner remembers

a decade ago the necessity of a kitchen desk area to house a

phone, television and file drawer. Needs have shifted, he says,

“Homeowners now have one simple high-tech piece of equipment

that combines television, Internet and electronic filing.” As kitchen

needs continue to evolve, Bilotta carves out the way in traditional

“tHere are a lot of questions, rumors, myths and misinformation

about the hardness and durability of soapstone. But I will put

these issues to rest with some simple facts about this beautiful,

naturally quarried stone used for countertops and floors and other

architectural applications in kitchens and baths. Soaptsone is the

only stone we work with, it’s our specialty, so we are very serious

about the quality of our products. We are a nationwide distributor

with the largest collection of soapstone available in the United

States imported from Brazil and India.

Soapstone has veining, much like marbles, and distinctive

markings which mineral oil or wax treatments often bring out and

highlight. Although soft, soapstone is a very dense (non-porous)

stone, more so than marble, slate, limestone and even granite

which has a propensity to soil. Soapstone is impenetrable so it

will not stain, no liquid can permeate its surface and that is why

it is a widely popular material used in chemistry lab countertops

and acid rooms.

has a hardness which makes the material completely suitable for

architectural applications. What happens if soapstone is scratched?

Scratches can be easily sanded out with sandpaper, and a dab of

mineral oil or soapstone wax will hide it.

We quarry our soapstone, cut and polish (hone) the slabs,

export, import, fabricate custom soapstone products, and install it.

We also custom-cut to size and ship slabs for self-fabrication. We

take pride in seeing the raw stone at the quarry, then seeing it take

shape in our client’s homes.”

UsiNG ModerN technology in bathroom remodels makes it

possible to conserve up to 70 percent of the water typically used

in older versions of plumbing fixtures, says Brian Reichenbach of

Consolidated Plumbing Supply, a Kohler distributor in Westchester

since 1928. But the beauty of these advances is that they offer a

more comfortable experience while reducing annual water costs.

Toilets manufactured before the 1990s used 3.5 gallons, or

more, of water with every flush. But today, most of Kohler’s toilets

including the Cimarron model flush stronger with 1.28 gallons per

flush. “Technology has solved the earlier issues of low-water-use

toilets that did not perform as well,” says Reichenbach, who adds

that based on a household of four, these newer toilets can save

homeowners up to 16,500 gallons of water per fixture each year than

the traditional 3.5 gallon models.

Kohler’s Katalyst showerheads intensify the flow of water even

at 2 gallons per minute (gpm). The showerhead’s design maximizes

the flow of water while infusing two liters of air per minute.

Products like Katalyst can save 35 percent in water costs per year.

Retreat Kitchen” at the Glynallyn Mansion in May-2012, Designer

Show house.

Modern Classics is a term that we use to describe an aesthetic

quality that we often produce. People like the peaceful quality of

clean modern lines, but most of our clients live in traditional homes

so it is important for us to acknowledge this. We strive to get the

correct push and pull of colors textures and forms, and once we’ve

gone through the process, the results are quite rewarding.

The color palette and materials of the kitchen are crisp and

clean with various colors and textures. Cabinetry details are subtle

and refined. The walls of the space were purposefully extended to

create a bay for the La Cornue handmade French range. Within the

walls the Sub-Zero refrigerator, food pantry and dish hutch were

recessed. The elegant arch encompasses the dark navy blue range

and adjoins the La Cornue drawer cabinets acting as the centerpiece

of the design. The island is a unique piece of furniture. We used

Danby Marble for the countertop, very classic and timeless material.

However, because it is so thick, and we used a square edge profile,

it had a more modern feel. While we wanted the island to have

light furniture feels, we didn’t want to use large turnings or legs

because we felt that the aesthetic was perhaps too traditional and

expected. Instead, we created large panels with smaller turning

beneath them, with a mirror toe kick that reflects the floor. This gives

the island the optical illusion that it is floating whilst still hiding all of

the plumbing for the sink and Dishwasher.

All of this produces a space that is the perfect combination

and juxtaposition of light and airiness, and cozy warmth––Sleek

sophistication and traditional familiarity.

oN a personal note, Larry Goren, co-owner of Hardware Designs,

has an overwhelming urge to buy American products—from cars

to clothing—whenever possible. On a business note, Goren also

strongly believes in the quality and design of American-made

kitchen and bath wares.

Alongside many of the world’s highest quality luxury
