IN THE NEWS

The World's Most Expensive Car: 3 Ferrari 250 GTOs for Sale at More than $55 million Each

In 2014 a Ferrari 250 GTO sold for a world record price at auction: $38.1 million, though there have been rumors of

private sales well above that figure. Now three of the 39 extant cars are for private sale. Two are private sellers, one

in France and one in New York, and they're both asking $57 million, while British prestige car specialist Talacrest has

another with a price tag claimed to be $55.8 million.

Each time one of the world's 100 most desirable cars comes to auction, it tends to break the price record because

the market is rising relentlessly. The seemingly simple concept of the world's most expensive car is also made more

problematic by the question of whether it's the one with the highest price tag (sell price) or the one that sells for the

highest price (buy price).

We track confirmed auction sales, but there's a huge invisible market of private and dealer sales where prices are

rarely made public, instead being whispered and even then, those prices are invariably only ballpark.

Fortunately, the world's most expensive car is the same no matter which rules you apply right now and the answer is

the Ferrari 250 GTO ... and three of the 39 in existence are for sale at present.

The two are private sellers asking $57 million for the 250 GTOs are in Northern France and New York. The price for

the one being sold by Talacrest is $55.8 million according to the Robb Report.

Talacrest operates at the extreme high end of the market and has previously been involved in eight Ferrari 250 GTO

transactions, so it is no surprise it is handling a car with a chance at the record. If that does happen though, it is just

as likely to remain an unconfirmed sale as Talacrest operates with extreme respect for client privacy.

Thirty-three GTOs were made in 1962 and 1963, and in 1964 a "Series II" was introduced, which had a slightly

different look. Three such cars were made, and four older "Series I" were given the "Series II" body and three "330

GTO" specials with a larger engine were also made. It brought the total of GTOs produced to 39. The Ferrari 250

GTO won the World title both seasons in succession.

The Ferrari 250 GTO was developed for the FIA Group 3 Grand Touring Car category and the GTO in the name

stands for "Gran Turismo Omologato," Italian for "Grand Touring Homologated." It's a race car built for the road to get

around those pesky racing rules and it won the championship both years it contested.

It's one of those cars that's just right. It stops, it handles well and power from the 3.0 liter Tipo 168 V12 is claimed to

be 300 hp (220 kW) though typically they produce slightly more horsepower than that when they've been rebuilt. This

is a real driver’s car, and the indications are that most of those who own them drive them regularly.

Only one Ferrari 250 GTO has ever sold at auction and it holds the world record price for a car at auction, having sold

for $38.1 million in August 2014.

The only other cars to have ever sold for more than $25 million at auction are a Ferrari 335S Spider Scaglietti that

sold for US$35.7 million, Fangio's 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Silver Arrow ($29.6 million), a Ferrari 290 Mille Miglia

($28.0 million), a Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider ($27.5 million) and a Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale ($26.4 million).

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

Ferrari made just four 335S race cars, Mercedes-Benz made 14 W196 Silver Arrows (10 exist, the other nine are in

museums or owned by Mercedes-Benz), there were only four 290 MMs made, 10 275 GTB/4*S NART Spiders and

three 275 GTB/C Speciales were produced ... and 39 GTOs.

Theory suggests scarcity is supposed to drive value but with a relatively plentiful supply in comparison to the other

most valuable cars, the GTO is defying marketplace gravity.

Hindsight is 20:20 vision and although race cars are now treated with respect in their retirement, it hasn't always been

so. Once a racing car's racetrack competitiveness falls away, its value also drops away and for much of the 1970s, a

GTO could be procured quite cheaply. Legend has it a GTO changed hands in 1969 for $2500. Once vintage racing

began to become popular though, those old racing cars came out of the shed and the price began to appreciate

rapidly and the conflicting issues of supply and demand have conspired to drive the price ever upwards since. Several

of the cars on our top 100 most valuable cars were abandoned during their lifetime, one supposedly dumped on the

Hollywood Freeway.

When new, the GTO commanded an $18,000 purchase price in the US, and buyers had to be personally approved

by Enzo Ferrari and his North American agent, Luigi Chinetti.

GTOs don't usually go to auction. They change hands privately and they keep pushing the unofficial world record

price for an automobile ever skyward. As the people that own them are watching their beloved cars appreciate in

value, the amount of money required to get them to even consider parting with their cars has grown dramatically.

Though there is no "official" way of verifying this, the prices achieved by private sales of GTOs are increasingly being

reported in the media.

According to media reports, in February 2012, a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO became the most expensive car ever sold,

fetching $32 million. Then, just a few months later, a 1962 GTO sold for $35 million. Then more media reports indicate

that a 1963 GTO sold this time last year for $52 million.

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

The owners of GTOs these days are hyper-enthusiasts and hyper-wealthy. Among them are fashion designer Ralph

Lauren, American communications magnate Craig McCaw, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, S. Rob Walton (Walmart

Chairman), Jon Shirley (former Microsoft president), Baron Bamford (knighted at 45 years of age and owner of JCB

a multinational), Greg Whitten (former chief software architect at Microsoft), Chris Cox of North Carolina has two

GTOs, and Baron Laidlaw (105th richest person in the UK). The above image is from one of the regular tours

organized for GTO owners by the Ferrari factory, several of which the Talacrest car has participated in.

A few years ago, UK radio and TV personality Chris Evans wrote a rather prophetic newspaper article entitled, "Why

the Ferrari 250 GTO is the best possible investment."

Evans subsequently purchased a GTO, then sold it for a reported $18 million a few years later, enabling him to

replenish the cash reserves and subsequently pick up the (then) world's most expensive car ever to sell at auction (a

Ferrari California Spider once owned by Hollywood actor James Coburn) a few years back.(Mike Hanlon)

Jay Leno's First Time Behind the Wheel of the F40 is a Magical Moment

Jay Leno has a vast collection of cars and thanks to his connections gets to drive other incredible machines. But Leno

has never experienced the raw, visceral feel of a Ferrari F40, until now. It doesn't take long for him to call it the best

Ferrari he's ever driven and to claim that it's one of the most exciting cars to drive.

The 1990 F40 belongs to Ferrari collector and jeweler David Lee. The vehicle, like the rest of Lee's collection, is

immaculate. Lee isn't a stranger to Jay Leno's Garage and has let Leno experience his other Ferraris in the past. But

the F40, in all of its turbocharged fury, is Leno's favorite Prancing Horse.

As Leno claims, the F40 is a visceral, raw machine that caters to those that enjoy driving. There are no driver aids to

help put down the 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8's power and nothing in the way to dilute the driving experience. Leno

even goes as far as claiming the F40 is Italy's version of the AC Cobra, which is high praise from a person that isn't

a huge fan of the brand. Leno clearly caught the Ferrari bug. All it took was a drive in the iconic F40.

Ferrari F1 Ace Sebastian Vettel Shows the Proper Way to Drive the LaFerrari Aperta

Listen, let's be frank here, we don't have to tell you much to get you to watch this video. It's a new Ferrari LaFerrari

Aperta, that's the convertible variant, being driving on mountain roads and a race track. Behind the wheel is Ferrari's

ace Formula One driver and four-time champion, Sebastian Vettel. Do you really need more than that?

Fine, we'll tell you a little more. The LaFerrari Aperta sounds amazing, with all 12 cylinders shrieking as Vettel pushes

it around corners. On track, we get to see a quick snippet of Ferrari's pride and joy drifting, too. The trio on the The

Grand Tour would surely approve. The video also celebrates Ferrari's racing history, which spans nearly 70 years, by

showing the company's famous race cars in reflections as the LaFerrari passes by. If that's not enough to get you to

watch the video, you must really hate Ferraris. (Joel Stocksdale)

1971 - 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC4

In 1971, Ferrari introduced the 365 GTC4, a 2+2 grand tourer designed to replace the 365 GTC and 365 GT 2+2.

Finding an appropriate middle ground between these two predecessors meant the GTC4 struck an odd balance

between aggression and practicality – it came with the same quad-cam V-12 as the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, but peak

output was lowered for better around-town response. The two-door exterior design promised a sporty experience, but

the overall aesthetic was relatively restrained. The interior was outfitted for driver enjoyment, but came with a

miniscule rear seat. Simply put, the GTC4 was a more civilized take on Prancing Horse performance, but it could still

bring the heat if properly motivated.

Once considered one of the most underrated Ferraris in existence, the GTC4 now regularly commands healthy six-

digit prices at auction. Chalk it up to the low production numbers and a booming interest in 12-cylinder GT Ferraris,

the GTC4 remains a classic Italian sports car with a unique flair and impressive speed potential.

Ferrari pulled the sheets on the 365 GTC4 at the 1971 Geneva International Motor Show. The model promised a

healthy mix of excitement and luxury, bearing the same underpinnings as the Daytona, but with the addition of a rear

seat, large trunk, power steering, and air conditioning.

The GTC4 was in production for just one year, getting the axe (some feel prematurely) in the fall of 1972. It was

succeeded by the 365 GT4 2+2, which used the same drivetrain, but gained an extended wheelbase for extra comfort

in the rear seat.

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

Although the GTC4 looks more reserved compared to its contemporaries, its styling origins are the same as countless

other Ferraris, as Pininfarina was enlisted for the design and coachwork. After spending time in Turin, the GTC4 body

was sent to Modena to receive its mechanical innards from Ferrari.

The lines are discreet and elegant, offering a simplicity that flows in unbroken shapes from tip to tail. Rectangles and

wedges replaced the ovals and curves of the ‘60s, with well-defined creases heralding an industry-wide turn towards

sharpness and deep angles.

The front end is low and wide, with a nose that terminates in an almost rectangular intake. The grille insert uses broad

slats that enhance the car’s visual width, and rather than the conventional chrome trim, there’s a matte black rubber

surround for the bumper.

Rectangles are also used for the clear driving lights and turn signals, as well as the pop-up headlight housings. Turned

on, the headlights flip up to reveal four circular lamps (two per side). Turned off, the housings recede back into the

leading edge of the nose. Meanwhile, two squared vents were placed on top of the broad hood.

In profile, the GTC4’s sporting intentions become much clearer. The roof employs a sloping, fastback angle that

concludes with the subtle suggestion of an upturn, while the windows form a slippery-looking teardrop shape.

Meanwhile, the fenders and beltline create a smoothed M-shape that insistently pitches the whole thing forward.

In the rear is a curt Kammback tail, which comes studded by four rounded taillights and twin rounded turn signals.

The lower bumper echoes the nose in matte black rubber.

With fewer chrome embellishments and none of the superfluous rounded lines of previous Ferrari GT cars, the GTC4

appears exacting and solid, like it was molded from a single slab of metal, eschewing any tacked-on trimmings in the

process. This is repeated in the corners, where we find cast aluminum Cromodora wheels as standard. However,

Borrani wire wheel was also available at an extra. (Jonathon Lopez)

8 More Supercars of African Dictator’s Son Seized, including LaFerrari, P1

and 918 Spyder

Another eight supercars belonging to Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the son of Equatorial Guinea’s dictator-like

leader Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, have been seized by authorities in Switzerland.

Among the cars seized were a Ferrari [NYSE:RACE] 599 GTB, Enzo, F12 tdf and LaFerrari, a McLaren P1 and a

Porsche 918 Spyder. They join a Bugatti Veyron, Koenigsegg One:1 and Lamborghini Veneno Roadster that were

seized a week ago.

L'Hebdo reports that the cars were seized on Monday prior to being loaded onto a cargo plane. According to the

French publication, Mangue is under investigation for money laundering.

Geneva has served as a refuge for Mangue and his cars after authorities in France and the United States started

seizing his assets on their own turf, due to allegations of misappropriation of state funds and corruption or misuse of

corporate assets.

The 47-year-old, officially the Vice President of the oil rich but poverty stricken Equatorial Guinea, made headlines in

2011 when French authorities seized his collection of supercars and other assets in a raid in Paris. Prior to that, U.S.

authorities seized his Malibu mansion and other assets including 28 classic cars and some Michael Jackson

memorabilia. (Viknesh Vijayenthiran)

The First Ever Ferrari LaFerrari Is Up For Sale For $10 Million

The Ferrari LaFerrari is arguably one of the best looking cars to come out of the Italian supercar makers stable and

with its limited edition production run totaling just 499 models, it's one of those cars that promises to not only hold its

value but to appreciate in value as time goes by. A quick scan of the classifieds reveals that the LaFerrari can be had

for an average of around $3,000,000 give or take a few hundred thousand. This one is listed for a fair bit more than

that, and it's not the first time either.

When the Ferrari LaFerrari was released, it could be had for around $1,400,000 which was a bargain price in hindsight.

A while back, we saw a black example for sale here in the US priced at $5,000,000, and many lost their minds because

of the inflation over list price. The original listing we saw of the special 1/499 model LaFerrari was seen on eBay and

even though it's the most special of the bunch, it was listed at "just" $3,800,000. Most thought that to be some sort of

scam, heck we even recommended going for the black one over this one as it seemed way more legit. It looks like

someone did but the first LaFerrari though, either that or the owner banked on more appreciation for the car.

Of course some cars appreciate in value better than others, and the LaFerrari seems to be part of that list. Seen for

sale in Luxemborg at Garage Pereira Guillaume SA, that 1/499 LaFerrari now sports just over 1,000 miles on the

odometer, showing it's possibly only put on mileage driving between dealerships. The biggest change to the car is

the price tag, which has increased by a whopping $6,200,000 for the last listing. So if you want that special, unicorn-

like first edition of the Italian hypercar, be prepared to fork over at least $10,000,000. We'd love to know if the original

owner managed to hold on to it for a while before this listing or if someone is about to make over $6,000,000 on a

single deal. (Chris Wall)

Tommy Hilfiger’s 2003 Ferrari Enzo Headed for Auction

The RM Sotheby’s January 2017 auction in Arizona promises to be a big one, with this Ferrari Enzo being one of the

auction’s absolute highlights. The desirable F1-inspired collector’s item has been part of Tommy Hilfiger’s collection

and it remains uncertain why the fashion mogul has decided to get rid of the Enzo.

Perhaps it’s been decided for him, because this wouldn’t be the first of Hilfiger’s private assets to be sold in recent

months. His lavish Plaza Hotel home in New York City was put up for sale early this year for a cool $70 million, but

no buyers have displayed interest so far. In the meantime the listing price of the penthouse was chopped down to

$58 million but it still seems like buyers are tough to find.

Things surely will be different with this 2003 Ferrari Enzo in its traditional colors. It boasts a brown and black interior

and appears to be in splendid condition. Of the 6.0-liter V12 mid-engined supercar only 349 were originally built and

it was one of the first projects where the Italian supercar brand would decide who gets to buy their car instead of the

other way around, making it even rarer.

Ferrari later decided to build an additional 50 bringing the total to 399 units, with one more Enzo following in 2005

commissioned by Pope Johannes Paulus II. That example was later auctioned off for $1 million at the benefit of the

victims of the 2004 tsunami disaster.

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

The Ferrari Enzo is still a supercar that could easily take on today’s elite with its remarkable performance. Weighing

in at only 1,365 kilograms, the 660 hp Ferrari Enzo rushes to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and is able to reach a top

speed of 350 km/h. If you’re interested in this Enzo, make sure to attend RM Sotheby’s Arizona auctions that take

place on the 19th and 20th of January next year. (Niels Stolte)

Running in the Family

Nick Mason reveals how racing was drummed into him from an early age

Nick Mason, TOFM’s Contributing Editor, dedicated Ferrarista and, of course, drummer with one of the world’s most

celebrated rock bands, has also long enjoyed a sideline as manager (and occasional driver) of the Ten Tenths Racing

team, made up of a fleet of classic cars from his own incredible private collection, housed in two aircraft hangars deep

in the English countryside.

Racing is, as Nick reveals in our video, very much in the Mason blood. His father would regularly race the family

Bentley at events, while Nick competed at Le Mans in 1979, part of the Dorset Racing Associates team, which finished

a credible 18th.

These days, his wife and son-in-law (Marino Franchitti, brother of Dario) keep up the Mason motorsport tradition out

on the track.

‘Uncle Brock’ Yates was ‘Larger than Life’

“The day I got married he rolled in at the last minute, driving something exotic like a Porsche or something – loud and

kicking up dust. He ran in and shook my hand and said, ‘you sure about this? If you have any second thoughts just

give me the nod and we’ll jump in my car and we’re outta here.’ I didn’t have any second thoughts, but that says a lot

about who he was. He was something else,” Tim Wendel recalled.

His friends often addressed him by his last name, Yates, but Brothers Tim and Chris Wendel always called him Uncle

Brock – even though he was actually their father’s first cousin. Brock Yates was a prolific automotive writer who drove

exotic cars, mingled with celebrities, threw incredible parties and regaled friends and family with stories of speed and

adventure, and yet still remained genuine.

“He was larger than life,” Chris Wendel said of Yates, a longtime Car and Driver writer and author who died last month

at age 82 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. “He shot from the hip; he ruffled some feathers. But people

were drawn to him. He was so much fun to be around.”

Tim Wendel, author of 12 books and a writer in residence at Johns Hopkins University, said Yates “was a major

reason” he too became a writer. “He would kind of blow into our world and then he’d be off again. He made writing

sound like so much fun.”

Yates and the Wendels’ father grew up together in Lockport, N.Y., and the brothers were also raised there. Brock

Yates had followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a writer, but Yates’ mother influenced the path his career

would ultimately take.

“His mom was a real ‘car guy,’” Chris Wendel said. “He told me that she took him to his first car race – midget racing

at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, back when it was called Civic Stadium.”

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

Yates went on to study at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., served in the Navy and later wrote for the Associated

Press. His big break came in 1964 when he accepted a position as managing editor at Car and Driver, where he

worked closely with David E. Davis, the magazine’s celebrated editor and publisher.

“Brock Yates was of a different generation when it came to automotive journalism,” said Hagerty Classic Car Insurance

CEO McKeel Hagerty. “He and David E. Davis were of a generation where they were encouraged to be critics of cars

and brands. His sense of humor had a bite, and he always spoke his mind. It is not an exaggeration to say he was

among the last of his kind.”

Jonathan A. Stein, publisher and editor-in-chief of Hagerty magazine, agreed. “He was a major league author when I

was a kid, one of those guys you looked to as one of the best. He had every right to put on airs, but when I first met

him I couldn’t get over how engaging he was. He was a gentleman – entertaining, humble – and he was completely

focused on whoever he was speaking to.”

Stein said the Yates-Davis dynamic was mesmerizing. “They had an interesting relationship. They were always

arguing about one thing or another. I never knew who was right and who was wrong, but boy, they were entertaining.

Afterward, Yates would put his arm around me and say, ‘David tells a great story, but let Uncle Brock tell you how it

really happened.’”

According to Car and Driver, Yates gained the nickname “The Assassin” after he wrote a story in 1968 titled “The

Grosse Pointe Myopians,” which accurately forecast the rise of Japanese-made cars in America. He also criticized

early safety advocates Ralph Nader and Joan Claybrook.

Yates’ rebellious nature went beyond the printed word. After a barroom discussion about how auto racing had become

stale, he created a no-rules cross-country race in 1971 that he called the “Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea

Memorial Trophy Dash,” better known as the Cannonball Run. After every other driver backed out of the first

scheduled event, Yates went forward with it anyway and drove the 2,863-mile route in his Dodge van, finishing in 40

hours, 51 minutes. The following year, he and Dan Gurney drove a Ferrari Daytona coupe in the first competitive

Cannonball, averaging 80 mph to finish in 35 hours, 51 minutes. “At no time did we exceed 175 mph,” Gurney has

said.

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

The race’s appeal was so widespread that Yates was asked to write a screenplay. Although “The Cannonball Run”

(1981) became a star-studded comedy, it was originally written in a more serious vein. According to Tim Wendel,

Steve McQueen was slated to play Burt Reynolds’ character, but when he was diagnosed with cancer, everything

changed. Yates later agreed to write the screenplays for “The Cannonball Run II” and “Smokey and the Bandit II,”

and although the movies earned more than $100 million at the box office, he wasn’t exactly proud of them.

“I vividly remember sitting with him 10 years ago, talking about his books and his career,” said Chris Wendel, now a

56-year-old commercial lender with Northern Initiatives in Traverse City, Mich. “After a while the conversation turned

to the movies he’d done, and he said, ‘The worst shit I ever wrote made me the most money.’ He really wasn’t happy

about that. That statement was kind of the embodiment of Uncle Brock.”

Tim Wendel agreed. “It irked him a bit,” the 60-year-old writer said. “He wrote a lot of really solid stuff. I have a copy

of Sunday Driver that he signed for me, and I cherish it. So it didn’t sit well with him that some people associate him

RACECRAFT

Racecraft – Overtaking on a Corner

A crucial part of racing is overtaking and defending your position – this is where things get seriously fun. This article

builds on the fundamentals of the racing line, which are worth reading before you move onto this topic.

Now we know you’re a sensible human, but please note that this is a track only technique and is inherently risky. You

would be nuts to do this on the public roads, and on the track.

Once you’re familiar with the articles above it’s time to apply these principles techniques to racing. A common

overtaking strategy is to dominate the inside line of the corner in an attempt to make your opponent run wide on an

non-optimal line – this advantage can help you gain a position, but it can also be defended against. We’re going to

learn about the offensive and defensive techniques.

Let’s quickly recap on the ideal racing line (shown below). If the track is clear you should be able to stick to this line

and continue to put distance between yourself and competitors stuck in traffic behind, however a clear track doesn’t

usually last for long and you’ll need to learn to continue to be fast with the distraction of other drivers.

The racing line with late apex

First, let’s tackle this scenario – you’ve been gaining ground the car ahead of you and you’re ready to try to overtake.

He’s been rudely blocking you on the straights so you’re going to try and grab the inside line on a right hander to force

your competitor to run wide on a slower line and claim your rightful place on the podium.

Now, the default behavior of everyone on the track will be to drive the optimal racing line and by now you’ll understand

how much slower it is when you don’t follow this path. You want to use this to your advantage – we’ll show you how

in the steps below.

Step 1: Get in the slipstream

As you’re chasing the car in front, it’s worth exploiting the slipstream to use the bonus momentum just before the

corner. Unless you’re in a more powerful car, this might be essential to aid the overtaking maneuver.

Step 2: Get a boost of acceleration

Pull out of the slip stream before your competitor brakes for the corner. Use the burst of acceleration to pull ahead

and to the side of your competitor to the inside of the corner. This is the riskiest part of the exercise – you need to rely

on the driver noticing you in the mirrors and not turning into the side of you resulting in crashing, flames etc. They will

probably be annoyed so might do this anyway. If they do, you need to be on the ball and may need to abort the move

by applying the brakes and moving back to your original position.

Step 3: Force them wide

Now it’s a battle of inner strength – if you do manage to hold the inside line you will have naturally forced the guy in

front to follow a wider (and slower arc) through the corner. You’ll be on a more natural racing line and should be able

to continue passing and accelerate away. Remember to wave or use an obscene gesture, depending on your

personality type. If they are really good, they can defend against this (discussed below).

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] November 18th, 2016

Step 4: Prepare for the next corner

As we know, the ideal racing line depends on a number of factors, not least the position and proximity of the next

corner. If we were writing this for a TV show, we would call it the two Ps of the racing line, then trademark it, then

become millionaires, then elected president. But we’re not. We’re broke.

Anyway, if there is a long straight immediately after the corner, there’s a relatively strong change you can hold this

position if you block your opponent. However, if you’re holding the inside line and the next corner is another right

hander and it’s pretty close, you may well have screwed up. Probably should have mentioned this at the start.

And this brings us onto the topic of defending against overtaking on a corner.

Defending your position in corners

Remember, to gain position you have hogged the inside line, and you’ve probably taken an early apex to force your

competitor wide. In other words you compromised your line for position, and if your opponent is wise they may be

able to use this to their advantage and get you back.

An early apex means you’ll now need to run wide to maintain speed, sometimes very wide. And if you’re running very

wide you may need to ease off the gas to not leave the track entirely. And if you’re easing of the gas early there is

every chance you’ll lose position on the next corner. This is why racing is such a great sport – you have to make lots

of rapid decisions some of which can be relatively catastrophic – sometimes you need to be brave, sometimes you

need to be calm.

So let’s switch roles now. You are in the lead (naturally) and some pesky newcomer thinks they’re going to muscle

through on a turn. But you are wise – you have read all of our articles on the racing line and probably donated large

sums of cash to us as a thank you. You’re fundamentally a great person.

This guy has been on your tail for a while, his parents probably gave him his racing car for Christmas and it’s been to

that tuning house you can’t afford. But you’re a champion. He attempts to push through on the inside but you don’t

make it easy for him, forcing a very early apex. He gains position and tries to pull away from you but has to run a

much compromised line. You apex later and have a more optimal exit gathering momentum more quickly.

If you’re smart, this loss of position will only be temporary – by gaining an advantageous line you will have a great

exit speed which can be used to re-establish your lead either on the straight or the next corner – the battle continues!

The above scenario is outlined in the diagram below.
