First-Generation & Health Science Students Receive Scholarships from FCS Foundation Florida College System (FCS) Chancellor Madeline Pumariega, Education Commissioner Pam Stewart and the FCS Foundation presented St. Johns River State College and Santa Fe College with scholarship checks this month to benefit first-generation students and students pursuing careers in the critical field of health care.

“The open access policy at our 28 state colleges allows all Floridians the opportunity to pursue their dreams and earn great careers and jobs,” said Chancellor Pumariega. “There are countless inspirational stories behind these scholarships and I am honored to help celebrate these successes.”

"Our colleges are the nation’s best at providing a high-quality, affordable education that prepares students to succeed in a global economy. For thou-sands of students each year, these scholarships open doors that otherwise may not have even existed,” said Commissioner Stewart.

Each year, earnings from the endowed gifts from Helios Education Founda-tion, Florida Blue and Bank of America contribute to the FCS Foundation to fund scholarships that benefit students at the system’s 28 colleges. St. Johns River State College received more than $22,000 and Santa Fe College re-ceived more than $31,000 for student scholarships.

Mike Hightower, chairman of the board of the FCS Foundation, said, “It is fantastic to see these students and to hear their stories about a brighter future. When Florida’s businesses partner with our great colleges, it is clear why Florida is the nation’s number one destination to find a rewarding career and build a wonderful future.”

IN THE NEWS Chancellor’s Students of the Month

Christian “Collin” Ziegler is a student at Northwest Florida (NWF) State College who is currently pursuing his Associate in Arts degree. Collin rises to any challenge placed in front of him and, more often than not, can be

found stepping forward to lead his peers.

In his leadership roles, Collin also challenges and encourages his fellow students to strive to be their best. He is a NWF State College RaiderRep and has also served as Pro Temp of NWF State College Student Govern-ment Association. Collin has also served as junior instructor for child self-defense; interned for Florida Representative Matt Gaetz; is a member of the Florida Messenger and Page Program and the Black Belt Club of Kuk Sool Won and volunteers

at the Ronald McDonald House during its Christmas Connection program.

Collin manages to accomplish all of his volunteer work and studies while maintaining a 3.68 GPA and working at a local pizzeria. Upon graduation, Collin plans to continue his education and pursue a career in International Relations.

Daniel Eaton is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and is a non-traditional student at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ). Daniel worked many years as a manager for various restaurants before deciding to attend college. After two years of earning a 3.68 cumulative GPA towards his Associate in Arts degree, Daniel was accepted into the Physical Therapy Assisting program in the summer of 2015.

Daniel currently serves as a student ambas-sador leading campus tours at the FSCJ North Campus. Last year he was very in-volved in the Student Government Associa-tion. Under his leadership, the North Cam-pus SGA successfully implemented several new initiatives such as International Educa-tion Day, Open Mic/Karaoke, the Zombie Run and Student of the Week. He also par-ticipated in numerous volunteer events and was a founding member of the campus’ Spanish Club.

Daniel also advocates for his peers and has brought their concerns regarding textbook affordability and the availability of financial aid to the attention of administra-tors during Campus Governance and Student Leaders Meetings. Daniel was elected by his peers to serve as the Florida College System Student Govern-ment Association District IV Assistant Jurisprudence in the fall of 2014 and assumed the duties during the spring of 2015.

Sixteen FCS Institutions Receive Grants to Support Student Success in Higher Education

Florida Gateway College and North Florida Community College are among 16 Florida College System institutions who have been awarded the TRiO grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which is aimed at student success. In total, 968 institutions of higher education across the U.S. will receive $270 million for student support services.

Florida Gateway College will receive $1.1 million over the next five years to assist in its educational efforts for first-generation, low-income, and dis-advantaged students. NFCC will also receive over $1.3 million to carry out their mission of helping those students successfully navigate through college and earn a degree or certificate on the postsecondary level.

“As we continue to focus on our students’ success – from their first day at FGC through graduation – this grant provides us with some wonderful support resources to help first generational college students succeed,” said Dr. Lawrence Barrett, president of Florida Gateway College.

The U.S. Department of Education has ranked Lake-Sumter State College third in the state for affordability among four-year schools. The ranking comes from the annual USDOE College Affordability and Trans-parency List and shows that LSSC is one of just 10 Florida institutions to make the national affordability list.

LSSC started its four-year degree program in January 2013.
