Artful Escapes 2010A palette of parties

in support of the arts!

PRESIDENT’S

CORNER

I am sad to report that many

community arts centers around

the state are closing their doors

because of lack of funding. We

need your continuing support to make sure that

does not happen here in Orange.

Funding for the Arts has been cut at national, state,

and local levels, corporate and foundation

donations are also scaled back. We have benefited

from funding from these sources, but we can’t

count on the level of funding we have enjoyed in the

past. We need your help more than ever. The Arts

Center in Orange is looking at a possible decrease

in funding to the tune of $40,000 for the coming

year.

My column is serving as the funding appeal we

usually send out at this time of year. The main

reason is that it will save us additional printing and

mailing costs. We work very hard at running our

Center efficiently and are always looking for ways

to get us more for our dollars. We anticipated this

funding situation and have been pinching pennies

until our fingers ache to maintain our gallery,

classroom, and Outreach. We continue to succeed

because we strive to be part of our community and

meet the artistic needs of our area’s citizens.

Please respond generously to our appeal because

every additional dollar you give helps us

tremendously. Please consider raising your tax

deductible donation by a dollar or more. Last year,

you contributed just shy of half of our operating

budget. This year, we’re going to need a bit more.

Thank you for all you do to make our Center the

success it continues to be. We hope we can count on

your support to keep us moving in a positive

direction.

I look forward to seeing you at the Center soon.

Ed HarveyPresident

The Fabric of Community continued

Culture on Cloth is an internationalinitiative connectingartists, children, andcommunities around theworld. The exhibit’scurator, Judith VarneyBurch fell in love with Inuit

art more than two decades ago. Motivated toeducate people about Inuit art because itrepresents a fragile and disappearing way of life,Burch organized “Culture on Cloth,” a travelingexhibit that began in Washington, then headed to locations inMongolia, China, India, Mexico, Latvia, Russia, Japan, Korea, Parisand Mexico, and will continue to travel throughout Central andSouth America. Burch also serves as a research collaborator forthe Smithsonian NationalMuseum of NaturalHistory, and hercollections have beenused for university corecurricula. Her hope is toinspire others to preserveworks of art aseducational resources.

At each stop on theexhibit’s travels, Burchalso encourages local children, to craft their own culturally specificart after viewing and learning about the Nunavut artists. Seizingon this wonderful opportunity, Arts Center Outreach instructorsworked with students at Gordon-Barbour Elementary and the Boysand Girls Club of Orange to share the experience and createfelted wool tapestries. Creating direct connections through art,and preserving and sharing living symbols of the Inuit people iswhat matters to her most, she says.

Our most sincere thanks to Flossie Fowlkes, and Bridget Bryantwho’s support made this very special exhibit and communityoutreach possible.
