PACKAGiNG & Print Media

Graphix Supply World (GSW) is a leading African supplier of digital technology for the signage, graphics, textiles, print and packaging industries

The company offers technical support and after sales, and is the exclusive distributor of the world’s best media, inks and label printing equipment at affordable prices.

For more information about what GSW is showcasing at Propak Cape, turn to page 22.

Specialised Exhibitions warmly welcomes visitors to Propak Cape, the highly-regarded regional exhibition related to Propak Africa, the largest and most comprehensive packaging, processing, plastics, printing and labelling industries exhibition in South Africa.

Propak Cape has seen an overwhelming response, with exhibition space sold out months before the show. Together with co-located shows, FoodPro, Pro-Plas Expo, Pro-Label Cape and Print Expo, Propak Cape brings exhibitors together across the various sectors, enabling them to engage with the most progressive companies in the country and view new products, latest industry trends, product developments and on-site product demonstrations.

The global packaging industry continues to evolve into a high-tech multi-billion dollar industry, where virtually everything used in our day-to-day lives comes in some form of packaging. It is a technologically-advanced, ever-changing industry, constantly focussed on innovation and invention to provide an add-on value to the products it serves.

The packaging sector is also entering a new era, one of extended producer responsibility, where market participants need to carefully weigh the materials they choose for their packaging – the amount, its composition and its end-of-life options – against the cost of its disposal, towards which they will have to pay.

South African companies have long been reusing and recycling packaging, when economically viable, and a common goal to help reduce costs has been minimised packaging. Propak Cape exhibitors will have the latest updates on this rapidly-evolving movement.

As a major exporter of wine, fruit and other valuable commodities to international markets, the Western Cape is heavily reliant on the packaging industry in realising the country’s export potential and is an ideal location choice for Propak Cape.

We extend our thanks to our exhibitors for their hard work in making this exhibition a success. The exhibition stands are of an extremely high quality, ensuring that our visitors see the best of the best in products, technology and services.

We also thank the Institute of Packaging (SA), the Packaging Council of South Africa, the Printing Industries Federation of South Africa, the Flexographic Technical Association of South Africa and Plastics|SA, all of which have lent their support and recognition to this exhibition. These associations are to be commended for their efforts in maintaining and promoting the advancement of the high standards prevalent in the South African packaging industry today.

And we also thank you, our valued visitor. Welcome, and enjoy your visit with us.

Warm regardsThe Specialised Exhibition Team

The Cape Town International Convention Centre, Cape Town, from October 25 to 27, 2011.

Gary Corin, MD, and exhibition manager, Michelle Bedser, from Specialised Exhibitions, welcome visitors to Propak Cape.

Welcoming message from the organisers

CPET, AMPET trays For long shelf-life

AGQPE’s green food packaging range growsAcknowledged as one of the leaders in specialised food packaging solutions in South and sub-Saharan

Africa, AGQPE produces a range of trays, lidding films and packaging machines, but its flagship product is the sustainable Enviropack range of biodegradable and compostable food packaging containers.

Enviropack compostable packaging is made in China and carries the Din Certco stamp, which is the European accreditation for compostable products.

The product range includes a number of different types of food containers, all of which are featured in the substantial product catalogue and on the website, and much of which will be on the AGQPE stand at Propak Cape.

The three existing generic-size ready-meal trays are very popular with supermarket chains as there is no need to change their standard machines and moulds. The containers can be used in both conventional and microwave ovens, and are also safe for freezing food. The Enviropack range is complemented by compostable film made by Innovia.

AGQPE represents ILPRA, a recognised manufacturer of tray sealers and liquid fillers, and supplies Faerchplast’s CPET and AMPET long-shelf-life award-winning packs, as well as lidding films sourced from Plastopil in Israel and Ronzully in Italy.

AGQPE has announced it’s been awarded exclusive supplier of the most innovative HMR food packaging system that allows users to prepare a meal as they’re required to be presented on a plate.

AGQPE is showing this system on its stand at Propak Cape. For more information, visit www.toruspak.com.

BRC-certified Cibapac is showcasing its many food packaging capabilities, among them its barrier base and lidding films that are finding wide application for meat, fish, chicken and cheese products.

A key feature of the EOS is that it’s the first label printer to be fitted with a touchscreen as standard. This makes it easy to call up existing labels, add data and print, without being connected to a PC. Complete labels can be saved to a USB memory stick or the internal memory of the EOS printer.

EOS1 and EOS4 differ in terms of their size. The larger EOS4 accommodates label rolls up to 8” in diameter. Labels are centered automatically in the printer and both units are available with 200 or 300dpi resolution. What’s more, wear parts can be replaced in a matter of seconds, usually without the need for tools.

These printers are delivered with the Windows driver and a full version of the label software, Cablabel R2+.

Cibapac’s innovative food packaging solutionsCibapac, a first-timer to Propak, intends showcasing its extensive inventory of food packaging solutions.

The Cape Town-based company, previously Linpac until an MBO in 2009, is a well-known name in several food industry sectors: fresh and processed meat, poultry, dairy, fish, ready meals, bakery, pizza, fast food and fresh produce.

‘We’ll be at Propak Cape to highlight all our capabilities as a market leader in PVC stretch/cling film, foamo trays (expanded polystyrene or EPS), multi-layer vacuum/shrink bags and artificial and fibrous casings for processed meat and polonies,’ comments national sales manager, Peter Gordon.

While Cibapac has a large catalogue of stock packaging items, it has also positioned itself as an innovator and offers considerable personnel and production resources for the development of new, cost-saving, differentiating concepts for its customers.

‘Packaging innovation is more about evolution than revolution. We see it as the practical, clever and cost-saving “re-purposing” of established technology,’ adds Peter.

‘Nowhere is this more apparent than in the work we’ve done in the area of barrier base and lidding films: multi-layer, co-extruded flexible films for thermoforming and vacuum packaging of fresh and processed meat, fish and cheese, as well rigid and semi-rigid APET for MAP thermoform packaging. Our lidding films are available in high tack and peelable options and we also offer in-house printing in up to six colours.’

Cibapac is particularly keen to talk to visitors about the food product protection and shelf-life extension possibilities of EVOH, a polymer that offers extra high barrier qualities against O2 migration.

‘We now have the capability to incorporate EVOH layer in our co-extruded lidding and thermoforming films,’ Peter notes. ‘This means we can assist food producers and retailers alike in their quest for longer shelf life and a greater safety margin. In addition, EVOH adds value with little extra cost as its superior barrier qualities mean that other materials in the packaging construction can be down-gauged. Thus, it also fulfils the growing “enviro” criteria for reduced packaging.’

‘We have world-class production facilities, all the right quality and safety credentials inherent in our BRC certification, and a wide product range of innovative packaging solutions,’ Peter continues. ‘We view Propak Cape as an ideal opportunity to step up our public profile – to talk to existing and new customers about our mission to deliver the right food packaging at the right price,’ Peter concludes.

Intelligent inspection is the smart solutionIntelligent Inspection Systems (I2S) is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specialising in machine vision inspection systems for the packaging industry.

I2S, a market leader in the plastic and metals packaging sector across Europe, has installed systems in 27 countries worldwide. Its customer list includes SAB Miller, Distell, Tetra Pak, Elopak, Bericap, Alcoa, Alpla, Nampak, and Portola Packaging.

The I2S Ideal range of inspections s ystems includes

over a wide variety of packaging applications.

The Ideal vector analysis software provides uniform surface inspection of objects of any shape or size and its software is particularly user-friendly and easy to learn.

While the inspection systems are installed as a standard by a number of OEMs in Europe, with which I2S has strategic partnerships, they are also available for sale to end customers.

professionalism in the packaging industry. This is achieved through the provision of many opportunities for education and networking.

IPSA’s One-Year Diploma in Packaging Technology has evolved into a well-respected qualification both locally and internationally.

The Diploma course is also a catalyst for maintaining ties to similar institutes in Africa. The course is offered under licence to students of packaging institutes in Ghana and Nigeria, while other African countries are showing keen interest in following suit. IPSA was instrumental in the formation of packaging institutes in Ghana and Nigeria and, this year, the Tanzanian Institute of Packaging was launched with major involvement from South Africa.

The requirement for a practical assignment for IPSA’s diploma course gave rise to the Student Gold Pack Awards, which have been extended to design students and, more recently, to food science and technology students. This widened competition is a part of IPSA’s strategy to expose young talent to the concept of packaging as a career choice.

The Gold Pack Awards programme has become the industry’s showcase. Since the programme’s humble beginnings in 1973, Gold Pack citations have become greatly sought after as the highly-esteemed recognition of packaging excellence.

These success stories emphasise IPSA’s important contribution to packaging professionalism. There can be no doubt that IPSA has been and continues to be relevant and meaningful to the South African packaging industry and, in many ways, to the pan-African packaging community.

IPSA reaches out to many people in the packaging and allied industries, giving them opportunities to network and connect through regular social and sporting occasions, educational and informative speaker events, plant visits, seminars, workshops and conferences.

The company has been servicing the filling industry for the last 12 years, continually gaining valuable insights in its field.

During the last two years, Marefa has steadily been developing its Generation Three machines, with its first achievement the yogurt tub filler that was well-received by its market.

Using this technology, the multi-pack tub fillers were born.

Marefa’s technology is always structured around the needs of its customers and, with this in mind, the company also developed automated CIP (clean-in-place) for this machine. Machines in the industry with the automated CIP feature already built into their structure have proved to be reliable and worth every cent, Marefa claims.

Marel offers fully-integrated systems that can be tailored precisely to customers’ needs and configured as required.

Marefa is also showcasing its nine-head rotary filler/capper, a little smaller than her bigger sisters, but in no way holding back as far as functionality is concerned. In addition, Marefa’s labeller is on show.

Marefa’s team is on hand for the convenience of immediate advice on the capabilities of its full range of machine (including those not on show), as well as for project planning and layouts.

Plastics|SA leads the way The Plastics Federation of South Africa (PFSA) has changed its name and identity to Plastics|SA.

As part of its aim to represent the South African plastics industry that is dynamic, modern and in step with international developments, a new visual identity was created that clearly aligns it with both the local and global markets. This new identity also aims to represent recent changes in the organisation’s senior management, structure, vision and strategic direction.

Plastics|SA is creating a vibrant and sustainable plastics industry and setting the direction and pace for members participating in the plastics packaging industry. To achieve this vision, Plastics|SA is focussing on areas of advocacy, communications, research, sustainability, training and member services.

Advocacy is about accessing and influencing key decision-makers, policy and strategies that affect the plastics industry, while communications relates to relevant industry issues to be shared with industry role players and the media.

Plastics|SA fulfils its research commitments by acquiring and compiling industry statistics, as well as research of strategic interest to the industry, and is dedicated to training, following the successful model that currently exists.

Focused on helping the industry to save money, to position itself for a carbon-constrained economy, to increase competitiveness and to build new skills for a modern workforce, Plastics|SA aligns itself to the strategic thrust and environmental activities of the polymer group organisations (PGOs) such as PETCO, POLYCO, SAVA, PSPC and MLPF to meet its sustainability objectives.

Member services are provided to companies that belong to their respective industry associations and pay the required dues.

The plastics packaging industry demands leaders who are not afraid to adapt, but are willing to embrace the challenges and grow the plastics industry as a leader across the African continent.

The new nMX blister machine facilitates efficient packaging of pills of any shape or size.

Polyplank pallets for superior qualityPolyoak is exhibiting its range of pallets, manufactured from recycled plastic components, with designs that are extremely strong but lightweight, and that offer a cost-effective solution.

Polyplank pallets look like wooden pallets but are made from a blend of recycled plastics, carefully researched and rigorously tested to ensure optimum rigidity without being brittle. They can be made to customers’ specifications for specialised applications and weight requirements, with load ratings up to 12 tons. Adding value is the fact that they are said to be the only plastic pallets that are effectively repairable.

As Polyplank pallets are slip-resistant in wet conditions, they’re perfect for the fishing and agricultural sectors and excellent for use in temperatures as low as -400 C. They are resistant to bacterial growth, do not absorb moisture or liquid, can be high-pressure washed or steam cleaned, and do not have to be fumigated. In addition, they can be used in HACCP food processing areas, and any broken components can be recycled.

The company remains committed to providing superior products and innovative solutions, at a fraction of the cost of renting wooden pallets, whilst making a significant contribution to the environment by saving trees and landfills from plastic.

Polyplank supplies a variety of industries from food processing, cold storage and distribution to warehousing, nurseries, wineries, and concrete and brick manufacturers.

Through its PackMark division, Pyrotec provides factory-level printing equipment and consumables to a range of South African companies, and is the sole distributor of Markem-Imaje products in South Africa.

And, as consumers show an increased awareness of environmental concerns, the demand for recycled-content packaging continues to increase. Pyrotec has incorporated green options into its range by, for example, changing its bleached paper liner to a natural, chemical-free craft version, as part of its Do-It line.

Now, more than ever, brand owners are insisting on green products that have quickly become something that consumers have come to expect. This trend is forcing suppliers to switch their focus to eco-friendly and recyclable packaging if they want to remain relevant in today’s marketplace.

Winpak’s palletising products stack upWinpak is exhibiting two exciting palletising products at Propak Cape.

The palletising Slip-Stop is a state-of-the-art biotic and environmentally-friendly product for stabilising pallet loads. It protects loads of boxes or bags from slipping, and allows for faster and safer transportation at factories and during the transportation cycle.

The Slip-Stop system is the least expensive when compared to stretch wrapping, hot-melt adhesives and PP banding machines. Just a simple spray of palletising slip-stop on top of the boxes or bags before

palletising eliminates slipping, falling or separation during the distribution cycle.

Main advantages are the minimal equipment cost and huge savings on plastic palletising materials and hot-melt adhesives, as well as reduced costs on consumables. Palletising Slip-Stop is a non-toxic, safe, stable, environmentally-friendly product that can be used for palletising products from food to fertilizer.

Winpak is also proudly introducing its new Grip Sheet at Propak Cape.

Grip Sheet is a non-slip protective insert paper sheet used to reduce breakage and protect products that are distributed on pallets. This product is made by Endupak, France, that has been in the market of non-slip waterproof paper used for the protection of pallet loads since 1987.

Grip Sheet increases the coefficient friction between layers on a pallet and may be used alone or in a combination with other products such as strapping, tape, and stretch or shrink film. It also has a low unit price and may be reused for up to four pallet trips. It’s easy to use and can be put into position either manually or by an automatic palletising system.

Grip Sheet is effective no matter what the pallet load may be and keeps the original packaging intact without marking or tearing.
