Overview Academy Travel is delighted to offer the Beethoven 250th Anniversary Tour. Join us as the world celebrates the birth of this extraordinary composer. This visits Bonn, Cologne, Dresden, Leipzig, Prague, Český Krumlov and Vienna. Follow in Beethoven’s Footsteps from his birthplace in Bonn to Vienna and, immerse yourself in the cultural, artistic and musical world of each city. Although Beethoven is the inspiration for our tour, the musical palette is much broader than this, and the tour is designed to appeal to those with an interest in western classical music of all periods. The itinerary features performances of opera and orchestral music in some of Europe’s leading music venues. The music of Beethoven forms the basis of five of the nine scheduled performances we will be attending, and we expect further Beethoven works to be included when the Prague and Vienna programs are announced. Our musical experience commences with the Beethoven Festival in Bonn. We continue to Dresden for a complete cycle of the Beethoven Piano Concerti conducted by Marek Janowski and featuring award winning pianist, Seong-Jin Cho. Attracting performers from around the world, the annual Dvorak Festival will take place during the Prague section of our tour. Vienna was the centre of one of Europe’s great empires and has an extraordinary cultural legacy, from the music of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, to the psychology of Freud and the art and architecture of Gustav Klimt and Otto Wagner. While there has always been great wealth for the cultural traveller in Vienna, with the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the city will be alive with performances and exhibitions honouring Beethoven’s outstanding musical legacy. Centrally located four- and five-star hotels have been carefully selected for this tour. Best-available seating for performances, pre-performance talks, walking tours, excellent cuisine and, museum visits are all included. Like all Academy Travel tours, there will be a maximum of 20 people in our party.

Your tour leader Dr Tom Ford is a specialist in classical music, with a PhD on Mozart. He is currently PR and media manager (classics / jazz) for Universal Music Australia.

Tom has written extensively on classical music, penning articles that have covered topics from Mozart and Beethoven to Gilbert and Sullivan. Tom has also been a broadcaster on 5MBS Adelaide and also 3MBS Fine Music in Melbourne, where he was also their Sponsorship and Marketing Manager.

“Tom Ford is exceptional… his music lectures on Beethoven were

informative and enhanced with musical excerpts.”

After our visit, we transfer to Dusseldorf Airport where we board our flight for Dresden. This evening we enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Dresden (B, D)

After lunch you may wish to visit the Neues Grünes Gewölbe (new Green vault), displaying individual exhibits with cutting-edge presentation. Inspired by Heinrich von Collin’s play Coriolan, Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 is featured in our evening performance. Overnight Dresden (B)

scene from Goethe’s Faust. Goethe’s writing inspired Beethoven not only by virtue of the content, but also by the rhythm of the language and, during 1809 and 1810, Beethoven composed both the overture and the incidental music to Goethe’s play Egmont. Tonight, Beethoven’s powerful Egmont Overture Op. 84 is featured in our evening concert. Overnight Dresden (B)

The Electors and Kings of Saxony amassed a breathtaking collection of masterpieces including works by Raphael, Giorgione, Titian, Van Eyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer. It is therefore not surprising that in 1768, Wolfgang von Goethe said: ‘I entered this shrine, and my amazement exceeded any preconceived idea!’. Tonight, pianist Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the 17th International Chopin Competition, will feature in an all-Beethoven concert. Overnight Dresden (B)

On arrival in Prague there will be time to relax before dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Prague (B, D)

Tuesday 15 September Prague – Performance VI

The elegant city of Prague, with its skyline of gothic spires and narrow cobbled streets, is one of Europe’s best-preserved cities. We continue to the Beethoven Museum in the village of Heiligenstadt where the young Beethoven wrote the so-called ‘Heiligenstadt Testament’ in which he expressed his despair over his growing deafness. Brimming with works by Europe’s finest painters, sculptors and artisans, the Kunsthistorisches Museum occupies a neoclassical building as sumptuous as the art it contains. Its many highlights include Roger van der Weyden's Crucifixion triptych, a Memling altarpiece, and Jan van Eyck's portrait of Cardinal Albergati.
