Na junção da Rotunda com a Avenida da Boavista encontra-se a Casa da Música — uma obra-prima do arquitecto holandês Rem Koolhaas, uma das instituições mais importantes do país dedicada à música e um edifício imperdível para qualquer visitante. Descendo a Avenida da Boavista, os motivos de interesse sucedem-se: desde os cafés e esplanadas, até aos palacetes que dominam a segunda metade da Avenida. Sensivelmente a meio, passe pelo Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves, obra do arquitecto Siza Vieira, e desfrute dos magníficos jardins da Casa de Serralves. Daqui poderá optar por descer até ao mar pela afluente Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, ou continuar pela Avenida da Boavista, atravessando o imenso Parque da Cidade que só termina na areia da praia do Castelo do Queijo. Qualquer que seja o percurso que escolha, um magnífico pôr-do-sol aguarda por si numa das muitas esplanadas das praias da Foz do Douro.

FROM BOAVISTA TO FOZ

The “Casa da Música” is located at the junction of the Rotunda and the Avenida da Boavista – a masterpiece of the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. It is one of the most important musical institutions in the country and no visitor should miss it. Following the Avenida da Boavista, the points of interest succeed one another: from the coffee bars and the terraces to the small palaces that dominate the second half of this avenue. Halfway through, you can visit the Contemporary Art Museum of the Serralves Foundation, a work by the architect Siza Vieira, and spend some time in the magnificent gardens of the “Casa da Serralves”. From here, you can opt to descend to the sea through the Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, or take the Avenida da Boavista, crossing the immense Parque da Cidade, which leads to the sand of the “Castelo do Queijo” beach. Whatever your choice is, a wonderful sunset awaits you at any of the numerous beaches of the Foz do Douro.

A WALK ON THE RIVER SIDEWALK

A Torre dos Clérigos é o ícone da cidade — obra barroca da autoria de Nicolau Nasoni — mas é apenas um ponto de partida para descobrir tantos outros monumentos ali em redor. Ao fundo da rua, a Estação de S. Bento, célebre pelos seus painéis de azulejos históricos. Mesmo ao lado, a cadeia da Relação (onde funciona o Centro Português de Fotografia) e o Mosteiro de S. Bento da Vitória. Descendo a rua, o Palácio da Bolsa e a Ordem Terceira de S. Francisco, onde podem observar-se obras de pintura, escultura, ourivesaria e mobiliário. De volta à Cordoaria, a Livraria Lello, as igrejas do Carmo e das Carmelitas chamam a atenção. Ao lado, na Pena Ventosa, a catedral da Sé, o Convento de Santa Clara e a Muralha Fernandina, dominam as atenções. Há ainda mais para visitar num raio de apenas alguns quilómetros a pé: o Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis, o Museu do Vinho do Porto e a Casa do Infante.

HISTORIC CENTRE – UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

The “Torre dos Clérigos” (Tower of Clerics) is an icon of the city — a baroque tower by Nicolau Nasoni. It is the starting point to discover many other nearby monuments. At the end of the road, the S. Bento Station is famous for its panels with historic glazedtiles. Close to it are the “cadeia da Relação” (where the Portuguese Centre of Photography is located) and the S. Bento da Vitória Monastery; descending the road, the Stock Exchange Palace and the “Ordem Terceira de S. Francisco”, where visitors can admire paintings, sculptures, jewelry and furniture. Back to Cordoaria, the Lello Library and the Carmo and Carmelitas churches will attract the traveler’s attention. Close to the “Pena Ventosa”, the Cathedral, the Santa Clara Convent and the “Fernandina” City Walls are the most distinctive features. There is so much more to see withina range of only a few kilometers by foot: The Soares dos Reis Museum, the Port Wine Museum and the “Casa do Infante”.

Apesar das subidase descidas, o passeio compensa sempre, conduzindo não raras vezes a miradouros e promontórios com surpreendentes vistas panorâmicas de diferentes perspectivas da cidade, sobre o rio, o casario ou sobre o mar. Apanhe boleia do teleférico na Ribeira de Gaia e vá até à Serra do Pilar, ou suba no Funicular dos Guindais, e poupe-se à subida entre a Ribeira e a Batalha. Qualquer destes percursos lhe oferece as mais belas vistas sobre o rio e a foz. Se preferir a sombra e o frescor da natureza, o Porto é uma cidade de generosos parques e românticos jardins. Siga do Jardim da Cordoaria, célebre pelas suas estátuas, até aos Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, e daí até ao Jardim Botânico no Campo Alegre, Parque da Pasteleira e finalmente descanse no Parque da Cidade, mas só quando chegar até ao mar.

No seu roteiro não pode faltar um momento para provar e saborear a tradicional Francesinha, receita criada por um emigrante português em França, que fez segredo do molho e conquistou o palato e o coração de uma cidade inteira. Uma boa Francesinha consiste de bom pão de forma recheado de carnes fumadas e de um bom bife, tudo coberto por um suave queijo derretido. Há quem inclua ovo e acompanhe com batatas fritas. When taking part in a Port Wine tasting at the caves, never forget to buy a bottle.

During your stay, there should always be a moment to taste the traditional “Francesinha”, the recipe which was created by a Portuguese emigrant in France. He prepared a secret sauce and conquered the palate and the heart of an entire city. A good “Francesinha” consists of a good loaf of bread, stuffed with smoked meats, and topped with a smooth melted cheese. Some include eggs and accompany it with French fries. The result is always a full meal that should be enjoyed with some time and in good company. It is an exclusive dish of Porto and an invitation to socialize.
