Introduction
1. Introduction (A very brief history of Leuven)
Leuven is very proud of both its past and its heritage, and rightly so. There is
so much to see and to do in and around Leuven that one visit is simply not
enough.
Although the first references to the town can be traced back as far as the
9th century and despite its strategic location on the river Dyle, it was not until
around the 11th-12th century that Leuven began to develop as an important
trading centre within the Duchy of Brabant. It was at this time that its first
town wall, churches, monasteries and abbeys were built.
1.1. Founding of the university
The town's once flourishing cloth trade had fallen into decline by the 14th
century, but a new golden age dawned with the 15th century. The university
was founded (1425), various industrial concerns flourished and the main
market square with its fine Gothic Town Hall was laid out.
The finely sculpted Town Hall and Saint Peter's church with its magnificent
interior in which hangs the famous 'Last Supper' by Dirk Bouts, are fine
examples of flamboyant Gothic architecture at its best. Dating from the
same period are the Cloth Hall, 't Sestich House and many churches,
including St Gertrude's with its magnificent choir stalls.
Other architectural styles are not quite so well represented, but they can still
be found. The Romaanse Poort (Romanesque Gate), Saint James's' church
and the remains of the first town wall are still clearly in evidence. The 13th
century Begijnhof (nunnery) complex has cobbled streets and fascinating
17th century houses. The Baroque style abounds in Leuven, from Saint
Michael's church and the interior of the John the Baptist's church to the
unrivalled stucco of Park Abbey. Both Park Abbey and Arenberg Castle are
exciting mixtures of architectural styles.
The town still owes much of its character to the numerous university college
buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, many of which were
renovated in the 18th century. The Van Dale College is pure Renaissance
style and De Valk College, Pauscollege (Pope's College) and the Arras
College are neo-classical style. Vlierbeek Abbey is also a fine example of this
trend.

Introduction
1.2. 18th and 19th century
The building of paved roads, the canal in the 18th century and the expansion
of the breweries created a great impetus for trade and population growth.
Unfortunately, this prosperity came to a sudden end under the reign of
Joseph II and the French occupation.
The most significant development for Leuven in the 19th century was the
building of the railway station and the construction of Bondgenotenlaan
leading to it.
1.3. 20th and 21st century
The two World Wars in the 20th century destroyed much of Leuven and a
great deal of the reconstruction work lasted well into the 1960’s.
Leuven has developed into a well-equipped, modern town with a thriving
service industry economy. There is a good balance of old and new buildings
combining to offer a well-designed infrastructure to suit the demands of
today's modern city with a rich tradition.

Food & drinks
3. Food & drinks
You will never have to walk far in Leuven to find a cozy place to eat and
drink. With no less than 178 restaurants and 241 cafés in the inner city alone,
it provides one of the most dense concentrations of food and drink
possibilities in this country.
Moreover as Leuven is the capital of beer, there will be plenty of terraces
where you can enjoy a drink on a sunny evening.
3.1. Restaurants
Leuven is a town that has something for everyone. Are you a notorious
reveler, a culinary gourmand, a bar fly or a culture vulture? In Leuven you
will always find something to your taste.
The shopping streets join onto one another via the squares, where you will
generally find cafés, restaurants and bistros. What is more, most squares are
free of or low in traffic so you can enjoy yourself in peace.
The culinary centre of Leuven is Muntstraat. With its restaurants and their
adjoining terraces, it makes any visitor’s mouth water, no matter where he
comes from. If Muntstraat could be called the centre of European cooking,
the Parijsstraat is the centre of world cooking. With its varied range of
restaurants and food shops Parijsstraat has a somewhat Mediterranean
atmosphere.
Some suggestions for restaurants are given below.

3.2. Bars
The ‘Oude Markt’ (Old Marketplace) is sometimes called the longest bar in
Europe, and rightfully so. Almost all the houses that stand around this square
are bars. When the sun comes out, so do the terraces and people can enjoy
a drink outside.
The same applies to the ‘Grote Markt’ (Great Marketplace) and, to a lesser
extent, the ‘Martelarenplein’ at the station.
The Stella Artois brewery is located not far from the station of Leuven. Here
for over six generations, one of the most famous Belgian beers is made:
Stella Artois.

4.2. Shopping
4.2.1. Souvenirs
Famous Belgian chocolates and beer can be found in any supermarket.
There are also several specialized chocolatiers where, for example, pralines
can be bought.
Some typically local products from Leuven include:
Con Domus and Nostra Domus, two beers that are brewed at the Domus
brewery attached to the Domus restaurant. The beer can be bought and/or
consumed there and the brewery can also be visited.
Manufacturer Lovania produces three of Leuven’s finest local products.
Fiere Margriet is what we call a ‘jenever’. Firstly, jenever is a typically Belgium
liquor and can be found here in many flavours, this particular one is
prepared with melon. This Fiere Margriet jenever is named after a 13th
century legend of a girl called Margriet. Shortly before she was supposed to
go the monastery she was raped and murdered. Her body was dumped in
the Dijle river, but carried by fish she floated up-stream where she was
discovered by Hendrik IV, who followed the river downstream and captured
her murderers. You can admire her statue at the beginning of the
Muntstraat.
The Hete Mie is a red wine with cherries which is heated (not boiled) before
drinking it.
The Lovania is a jenever made from a recipe that dates back to the 17th
century. It is prepared from white wine with different types of peaches and
sweetened with natural sugars.
Hector Tripel is an unfiltered, high fermentation beer with secondary
fermentation in the bottle with a bitter and somewhat fruity taste. It is
brewed in Heverlee by brewery Traagwater.
The aforementioned brewery is also responsible for making the official
Leuven city beer, called Rogier. This is an unfiltered, dark amber beer of high
fermentation with secondary fermentation in the bottle. It has a typical bitter
hop taste with a strong aroma of sweet fruit.

Kotmadamkoek is a kind of meat pie laced with different fruits and it is
delicious between a sandwich or as a hot dish. The meat pie was named
after the famous statue at the Old Marketplace of one of Leuven’s
phenomena called ‘kotmadam’. This evokes the image of a mother taking
care of the students that are renting rooms in her house, something that
often happens in this student city. It was made by artist Fred Bellefroid.
Leuvens Fonske is a burger of minced turkey meat with spiced herbs. This
dish is also named after a statue, Fons Sapientiae (source of wisdom), which
can be found at the Fochplein (currently under renovations). The name
Fonske is actually derived from the real name given to students by the
inhabitants of Leuven. The turkey burger has the shape of an open book,
where the students supposedly get their wisdom.
As well as the turkey burger, there is also a jenever and chocolates named
after Fonske. The Fonske chocolates are pralines, handmade from Belgian
chocolate and with a coffee, caramel or praline filling.
Musa Lova is a liqueur made on the basis of the Cavendish banana. It is
made in two varieties: with ‘Damiaankoffie’or with honey. A while later
pralines were developed, they can have up to eight flavours, based on two
original flavours, banana liquor and chocolate from the Dominican
Republic, Peru and Venezuela.

4.3.2. Bus
‘De Lijn’ is the name of the Flemish transport company which is responsible
for urban and regional transport by bus. Next to Leuven station one can find
a ‘De Lijn’ shop where tickets can be bought and several bus stops. A
presale ticket costs 1,20 euro for traveling through 1 or 2 zones, while buying
your ticket on the bus will cost 2 euros. If you want to take the bus several
times it is cheaper to by a ‘Lijnkaart’ which will cost 9 euro for 10 rides. Tickets
and ‘lijnkaarten’ can also be bought in most newspaper shops or online:

4.5. Culture
4.5.1. Museums
Several museums are located in Leuven and are worth a visit:
The M-collection presents the story of Leuven as told by the arts. The
museum has recently been completely renovated, with numerous
innovative exhibitions. Many pieces previously ‘forgotten’, have finally been
given the recognition they deserve. In addition, the prints and drawing room
is completely new.
M exhibits classical and modern art inspired by the multi-faceted nature of

The Treasury of Saint Peter’s is located in Saint Peter’s Church, which is
considered to be one of the finest examples of 15th century Brabantine High
Gothic architecture. Construction of the church began in 1410 and took
more than a century. In 1980, the impressive ambulatory was turned into a
museum housing numerous statues, paintings and a collection of gold and
silver pieces such as reliquaries, monstrances and chalices. You can also visit
this treasury with your entrance ticket of the M Museum.

4.5.2. Libraries
The Central University Library
During the First World War the university library, then housed in the University
Hall, was destroyed by fire. In the 1920s, a new library was built in Flemish
Renaissance style on the Mgr. Ladeuzeplein 21 mainly thanks to American
funding. On the outside and in the gallery the names of over 300 American
educational institutes having contributed to its construction are carved. The
carillon in the tower - with its 63 bells one of the largest in the country - was a
gift of 16 American engineering associations. The library houses more than
three million volumes.

4.5.3. The 7 Wonders of Leuven
When students in the 16th century heard about the 7 Wonders of the World
they decided that 7 wonders could be found in Leuven and succeeded in
finding them:
1. People were able to walk underneath the roots of trees due to several old
elm trees that grew on the ‘Tervuursepoort’.
2. The living walk among the dead: where the ‘Hoelstratepoort’ was situated
at the Tiensestraat, part of the cemetery of Sint-Michiels church lay above
the street.
3. The water flows against the current. Through the movement of the water
gates of the Dijle, man was able to make the water go against the current.
4. Where the tower is lower than the church. In the sacristy of the Carmelite
monastery there was a little tower that was lower than the roof of the
church.

5. The altar outside the church. The Baroque façade of the Sint-Michiels
church and the many stairs were shaped as a 17th century shrine.
6. The tower without nails. The tower of Sint-Geertrui church is not covered
with slates or tiles but has an exposed stone spire, so no nails were needed.
7. The bell outside the tower. One of the bells of Sint-Jacobs church is
hanging outside the church tower.
Sadly, only the last three wonders survive.
