A brief life profile…

Bro Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni

Nasir Ahmad B.A., LL.B.

Bro. Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni was born on 7 February, 1935 in District Suriname. He had his early education at the Saron School, situated at Slangenhoutstraat, Paramaribo, to which he used to travel by train.

His father had a small business selling ice-bowls. The family moved to Nickerie in 1946 where Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni worked at a sawmill for some time, then he returned to Paramaribo and worked for three years in rice fields in Leiding 19, a place about 20 kilometres from Paramaribo.

He worked for Maulvi Ahmadali, as well, and during this period, he be-came very close to Maulvi Ahmadali and his family, and in 1951 he married Maulvi Ahmadali’s youngest daughter, Haleema.

He also used to visit Mr Mohammed Hanief Kalloe’s shop situated at Klip-stenenstraat in Paramaribo, and this re-sulted in starting his own tailoring busi-ness, viz. A. Shakoer Tailors, at Pad van Wanica [the name of the road has now been changed to Indira Ghandhi Road] on 12 April, 1960.

In May 1974 he migrated with his family to Holland and settled in The Hague. He got a job in the classified binding section of the Government Printing Press and after working there for almost 15 years he retired on 19 January, 1988 for health reasons.

Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni was member of the youth organisation of the Imdadia Isha‘at-i Islam. [The Imdadia Isha‘at-i Islam at Pad van Wanica, a big branch of the Suriname Islamic Association (SIV-AAIIL).] At that time Mr Aboebakr Twahir Ahmadali, the eldest son of the late Maulvi Ahmadali, was the President. He was also very active in the activities of the Stichting Qur’an Fonds Suriname and generously contributed towards the reprint edition of the Dutch translation of the Qur’an rendered by the learned Bro. Soedewo that was originally published by the Indonesia Ahmadiyya Anjuman.

When lot of Ahmadis migrated to the Netherlands from Suriname in 1974, they joined an organisa-tion which already existed in The Hague under the name Islamitisch Genootschap Nederland. It was founded by Maulana Ghulam Ahmad Bashir who was its first President.

As most of the members who had then joined the organisation had migrated from Suriname they wanted to have a mosque. But in those days, because of Ahmadis being declared a non-Muslim mi-nority in Pakistan, members were confused and the majority of the Board Members were reluctant to retain the name Ahmadiyya for the organisation. As a result, a group of people who were eager to retain the name Ahmadiyya under the leadership of Mr Noer Sardar started to collect dona-tions to buy a building to construct a mosque which should be affiliated to the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement. The Board thus organised elections in 1975, and as the majority of the members were of pro-Lahore Ahmadiyya aqeeda, a new pro-Lahore Ahmadiyya board was elected. Among oth-ers, the following members were elected: Mr Noer Sardar, Mr Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni, and Mr Shamsoeddin Ilahibaks. Hence, the Lahore Ahmadiyya members founded the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam Nederland in 1976.

In 1977, a building was purchased at Paul Krugerlaan, very close to Shakoer Hoeseni’s house, and its ground floor was used as a mosque. The pro-Lahore Ahmadiyya board members individually stood surety for the Anjuman’s debts as far as the purchase of the building was concerned. Bro Shakoer Hoeseni and a few others participated manually in the work of transforming the ground floor of the building into a mosque.

In 1989, Bro Shakoer Hoeseni was one of the founding members of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Isha‘at-i-Islam, The Hague, founded exclusively to publish Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman literature into Dutch. Within a year the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman purchased a building of its own at Kepplerstraat and a mosque was built on the upper storey. In 1996 the Dutch translation of the Holy Qur’an by Mr Soedewo of Indonesia was reprinted. Many other books were also translated and printed, such as The Religion of Islam and A Manual of Hadith. Mr Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni remained a board member of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Isha‘at-i-Islam till his death on 26 May 2013.

May his soul rest in peace!

From Engelenburgstraat to Westduin Cemetery

The late Bro. Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni was laid to rest with due solemnity

Our noble and devoted Bro. Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni, a founding member of the AAIIN and of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman, The Hague, Holland, expired on 26th May and was buried in Westduin Cemetery on the evening of 29th May, 2013. He was a member of the well-known Maulvi Ahmad Ali family of Suriname and kept up its tradition of devotion and passion for Islam. We are including in this special issue of HOPE his brief life history together with details of condolences, special contributions and tributes paid to him during the three days prior to his burial.

Saeed, head of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam (Lahore, Pakistan) gave a beau-tiful explanation of al-hamdu lillah (‘all praise be to Allah’) and showed how, at the very start of Sura Fatiha, Allah has exhorted us to be thankful in all situations. On this occasion, when a very

dear brother of ours has departed, we are thankful that he led a very noble life and that Allah will grant him a peaceful place as promised in the Qur’an. Mr Basharat Ahmadali (Managing Director of the Decentralization and Local Government Strengthening Programme of the Ministry of Regional Development, Suriname), Mrs Samina Malik (USA) and Mr Nasir Ahmad (UK) paid tributes to the noble character and voluntary services rendered to the cause of Islam by the late Bro. Hoeseni. They also conveyed messages of condolence from their respective communities. We will try to repro-duce in this issue the texts of some of the contributions. A very large number of family members, members of the Jama‘at and friends and admirers from all walks of life attended the funeral service. Hazrat Ameer Dr A. K. Saeed led the Janaza prayer and offered du‘a at the grave.

In the evening after dinner at the Kepplerstraat Mosque, Bro Noer Sardar conducted a concluding condolence session. Bro. Reza Ghafoerkhan recited the whole of Chapter At-Tatfif. It deals with people who make a default in their duties. Its verses from 18 onwards mention the record of the righteous and give a brief description of the bounties and blessings granted to them in the afterlife. Mrs Samina Malik gave a summary in Urdu of what she said about the late Bro. Shakoer Hoeseni at the Westduin hall for the benefit of the elders. By this time Dr Zahid Aziz and Mr Shahid Aziz had also arrived by the evening flight. Mr Shahid Aziz, Secretary of the UK Jama‘at eulogised the services of the late Bro. Hoeseni and pointed out that it was his devotion and sincerity towards the noble cause that had attracted people not only from all parts of Holland but from abroad as well. He expressed his regrets for not being able to arrive in time for the Janaza.

Bro. Abdoel Saeed Hoeseni, eldest son of the deceased and a board-member of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman, Mrs Haleema Hoeseni and immediate family members are grateful to Hazrat Ameer for gracing the occasion with his presence and to all others who came all the way from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Almere and other far-off cities, and also to Mrs Samina Malik, director Publications of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman, Ohio, USA, Mr Azhar-ud-Din Ahmad from Woking (UK), Dr Zahid Aziz from Nottingham (UK) and Mr Shahid Aziz, (Secretary of the UK Jama‘at) for attending the funeral.

Hazrat Ameer Dr A. K. Saeed, who was on a week’s visit to Berlin, had arrived in The Hague on the 25th. Dr Zahid Aziz and Mr Shahid Aziz arrived the same day late in the evening. Both, after attending the concluding condolence meeting at the Kepplerstraat Mosque, came to the Paul Krugerlaan Mosque to participate in the special meeting. The main subject of the meeting was the message of the Ahmadiyya Movement and what are the responsibilities of its members to further the cause of Islam. All three speakers spoke on various aspects of the message of the Ahmadiyya Movement. It was followed by a lively question/answer session. Hazrat Ameer specially em-phasised the importance of taking of the Pledge. He argued that its object, as with any other oath, is to commit oneself to some important task – and the cause of Islam is the most ardu-ous task these days when it is under threat from intellectual, social as well as political onslaughts. To fight on these fronts is a jihad as difficult as fighting on a battlefield. At the end, several members re-pledged themselves. During the question time, long hours of fasting and how to fix the taraweeh and

tahajjud prayer timings, keeping in view the early sehr timings also came under discussion. On this occasion our learned Bro. Haroen Badoellah did wonderful job of translating all the speeches and questions/answers into Dutch. His presence made the session really meaningful and fruitful for all.

Glimpses of a noble Character….

In Memory of late Bro Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni

Service to Allah and his Fellow BeingsMr. Basharat Ahmadali

My dear Sister Halima,Assalamo alaikum

I stand here on this very sad occasion to address you, the children, the family, the relations and friends of our late beloved “Mahase”- Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni. I have come here specially from Suriname and am representing my wife Emma, my children, our Bhai Toyab and Bhabi Farida, the Ghafoerkhan family, Board of Directors and mem-bers of the Imdadia Isha’at Islam (branch of the S.I.V. in Paramaribo), members of the Board of the Quran Fund, and many friends of Shakoer Bhai in Suriname.

Let me first tell you who was Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni?

He was more known by two pet names which characterized his personality. The title of Mahase, which means someone of great respect because of his character, integrity and helpful attitude. This characteristic of his was discovered in him at a very early stage of his life by our elder brother Oesman when we lived together with him, our father and mother at Leiding 19. The other title of President, he got for his involvement in the management boards of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Nederland and Ahmadiyya Isha'at-i-Islam Foundation in The Hague, Netherlands. Both these titles given by the family and the Jama’at show the kind of respect and personality he enjoyed among them.

He was always friendly, helpful and willing to do anything for the family, friends, Jama’at and all the people around him. His priority was Islam and the mosque affairs. During all these years of married life you both have tried to live next to a mosque, starting at Leiding 19, next to Moefidoel Islam Mosque; then at Pad van Wanica, and then again next to the Mosque of Imdadia Islam. When you came to Holland you both, as members of the Jama’at, established and maintained connection with

Mr. Basharat Ahmadali (Brother-in-law), Suriname

Please remember me in your prayers and seek Almighty Allah’s special mercy to make the surgery easy and successful and bless me with a perfect health.

Latest: By the grace of Allah the operation has been successful. She is still in intensive care section but has started taking normal food. Hopefully she will soon be shifted to a room. She has thanked all those who prayed for her health and has requested to continue their prayers.

the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Nederland and the Ahmadiyya Isha’at-i-Islam Foundation and the Mosque, and continued to live not very far from the Mosque. This continued neighbourhood of a mosque and contribution towards the Jama’at and the Mosque is a special blessing which you both enjoyed. The Jama’at and friends always highly appreciated your devotion. Having lived and served the cause of Islam and the Movement must be a source of great satisfaction and comfort at this time of loss of companionship and sadness.

Mahase, my dear brother-in-law, you always looked back upon those years with extreme thankful-ness when you enjoyed the great company of people like our father, late Moulvi Sheikh Ahmadali, elder brother-in-law, late Moulvi Hanief Sahebali, Bro Oesman Ahmadali (Imam), elder brothers, Aboebakr Ahmadali and Toyab Ahmadali, presidents of Imdadia Isha’at Islam. Riaz Ahmadali, my son, always talk highly of you and say that people like Shakoer uncle practiced the Koran in their daily lives. Indeed, many characteristics of a righteous person described in the Qur'an were to be found in him. We have every reason to be proud of him.

With the passing away of Bro Shakoer a whole generation to which he belonged seems to have passed away. He was the youngest of a family of five. His two sisters Bismilla and Rasoelan and his two brothers Abdoel Rahman and Abdoel Razak have passed away before him. These five children were from the marriage between two British-Indian immigrants:

(i) His father Mr. Abdullah Hussain who most probably hailed from Lucknow came to Suriname on contract in 1914. He travelled from Calcutta on April 25, 1914 and reached Suriname in 40 days on June 4, 1914 and was put to work at the Belwaarde plantation in Commewijne, Suriname. In 1934 he chose Abdoella as the first name and Hoeseni as family name.

(ii) His mother’s name was Imamon Nabibux. In 1933 she chose Nabibux as family name. On November 27, 1913 she travelled along with her mother from Calcutta and reached Suriname in 42 days on 7 January 1914. The mother was put to work at Pieterzorg plantation in District Commewijne. On arrival in Suriname the girl’s age was 7.

On 29th June 2013 Suriname Hindustani Immigrants will celebrate their 140th anniversary (June 5, 1873 – June 5, 2013). Thanks and tribute to all the British Indian Immigrants.

These children were born in Nieuwzorg, Beneden Para, Van Drimmelen Polder, and District Suriname respectively. Bro Shakoer moved as a little boy with his sister to District Nickerie for a while together with his father. His mother passed away after his birth, so he was brought up by his two sisters. After some time his sister Bismilla moved from Nickerie to Leiding 19. At Leiding 19 they were known in the neighbourhood as “Nickerieman”. After some time his father came and entrusted care of Bro Shakoer to his daughter Bismilla.

My father and Bro Shakoer’s father were “Jahazi” (companions of the ship) and it was here that they met each other by chance. Bro Shakoer came to work with my father and began his career working in rice fields, sowing of paddy, planting and harvesting paddy and grinding etc. He was doing everything that was related to agriculture and rice cultivation. He also helped my mother on the urd (black bram), beans and corn fields. While working in Leiding 19 he met my sister Haleema who was more known as Lima. They got married (Lima was 14 and Shakoer 17). First few children were born in Kandal/Leiding 19. He also learnt from my mother skill of tailoring. I still remember the mini garments which he sewed as a specimen. Then he started dressmaking business. His first work place was next to the Mosque of Moefidoel Islam. Then he moved to Pad Wanica where his children grew up, had training and education. Here he joined a reputable company of dressmaking. Again he found a residence next to a mosque. So you will see that he, Lima and the children were always near

to and involved in the activities of a mosque and thus were always connected with the Jama’at. He also had been a board member of the “Imdadia Isha’at-i Islam”. He contributed to the publication of the reprint edition of the Holy Quran in Dutch, and was also associated with the School Board of Imdadia, LBGO school in Suriname.

In 1974 he moved permanently to The Netherlands but his life style did not change. Here also he kept his strong relation with Islam and Islamic service.

He had a great time in Steynlaan in The Hague. There Bro Shakoer made many friends. This is only possible when one welcomes them with an open heart along with their good and bad points and also forgives and ignores their weaknesses. Even within his family, he always tried his best to main-tain good relations. This is only possible when one takes initiative in promoting good relations by bringing reconciliation and consciously striving for amity. These are some of the basic qualities of a righteous person which have been mentioned in the Holy Qur'an.

There was always an atmosphere of civility and warm welcome at his home. Everyone in the family, especially his friends were welcome. Almost every day was like a party going on at the house. It was bustling with members of the family and friends.. The accommodation at Steynlaan was not very spacious, but everyone was accommodated and no one had any complain. Even within this limited space and resources he would try to accommodate any Surinami, who migrated from Suriname and needed help and guidance. I had so much trust and faith in him and in my sister that I entrusted the responsibility of my two children Sharia and Riaz for sometime.

The work for the Mosque was a passion with both of them in Suriname and it continued in Netherlands. How Allah blessed him for this selfless service and devotion my sister Lima and her children know very well. All praise be to Allah, the Most High, how his children, though he himself had no schooling, are highly educated, respectable and devoted to the cause of Islam. The reward has certainly been highly fulfilling. Both performed Hajj and their whole life has been a service for the cause of Islam.

The Holy Prophet (sas)is reported to have said that with death addition of deeds comes to an end but blessings of three things continue to benefit the deceased and are a continuous source of for-giveness and comfort for him in the Hereafter :

1. Charity which continues to benefit people;2. Knowledge which enriches and guide people;3. Righteous children who do good deeds and pray for their deceased parents and near and dear

ones.

We are certain that the kind of charity which Bro Shakoer has been doing, such as helping in setting up a mosque and other related services, will continue to bring peace and be remembered for many years to come.

We are sure that his contribution will continue through his children and grandchildren in spreading knowledge of Islam, supporting the cause of the Ahmadiyya Isha'at-i-Islam in the years to come. His children with knowledge and dedication along with my noble Sister will be source of blessings for our deceased Shakoer Bhai and for the progress and prosperity of the Ahmadali Family as well which has earned name and fame for them both in Suriname and in Holland.

If we study the history of our parents and grand-parents who migrated from India (1914) and settled at various cities in Suriname and who lived and worked at various places, such as Commewijne, Beneden Para, and Nickerie District (Van Drimmelen Polder), we are amazed how much they worked hard and passed through some very difficult times. Shakoer Bhai started his career as an ordinary worker doing all sorts of odd works. But how he managed to go forward step by step by sheer dint of continuous hard work, patience and commitment and gained prosperity and social dignity. He deserves our highest regard and respect.

All these good memories will live forever in our hearts and will inspire us to take the legacy foward.

I would like to conclude my reminiscences of Shakoer Bhai reciting a prayer of the Holy Qur’an which is very apt at this moment. It is a favourite prayer of Bhai Toyab, who recites it beautifully. It is a reminder as well a very humble supplication for seeking forgiveness and blessings of Allah for the late Shakoer Bhai:

"Our Lord, punish us not if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not lay on us a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us.

Our Lord, impose not on us afflictions which we do not have the strength to bear. And forgive us! And grant us protection! And have mercy on us!

You are our Patron, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people” (2:256)

Ameen!

Finally, my dear family, I recall some inspiring thoughts about death. I do not remember the actual words and who wrote them, but I will express them in my own words:

Death comes only once in life and makes others feel its worth at all moments.Once it gets you, it takes away everything of life from you except your good deeds.

Do not despise death, but accept it.Death is not a punishment, but an inevitable law.

The death is not a terrible thing, but the idea that death is a terrible thing, that's terrible. It's harder than one has expected to undergo,

But one who lives in the minds of his beloved, is not dead. Dead is only he who is forgotten.

Passing Away of ‘A Man of Allah’Mrs. Samina Malik, Ohio, USA

Assalamo AlaikumI would like to say a few words about our esteemed brother Mr Shakoer Hoeseni .

First of all I wish to convey the condolences from the USA Jama’at, Dr. Noman Elahi Malik and myself to the family of our dear Brother Shakoer Hoeseni. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi Raji’oon .(From Allah we are and to Him is our eventual return)

We are very sad due to the passing away of our beloved brother Mr Shakoer Hoeseni , and we pray to Almighty Allah to admit him into His forgiveness and grant him a high place in Paradise.

The outstanding services which Brother Hoeseni rendered to the Stitchting Amadiyya Anjuman is a living example for all of us. He was a person that everybody looked up to. He was loved and admired by all.

It was in 1985 when I made my first visit to Holland. When I informed Dr. Saeed Ahmad, our beloved late Ameer and late Hafiz Sher Muhammad of blessed memory about my visit to Holland, they both

advised me not to forget to visit Mr. Shakoer Hoeseni and Mr. Noer Sardar. The two late elders had great love and respect for Mr. Shakoer Hoeseni. They used to stay at his house whenever they visited Holland.

Dr. Noman Malik and I also stayed with Brother Hoeseni and sister Haleema during several of our visits. They both took very good and loving care of us.

He had served the Jama’at through various stages with great dedication and hard work. When the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman was formed there were not enough funds and manpower, but

Brother Hoeseni and their sons and brother Noer Sardar did their very best to join hands with others to make this Anjuman a success. And now by the Grace of Almighty Allah the Stichting

Ahmadiyya Anjuman is doing so much publication and propagation work due to the sacrifices of these stalwarts.

Bro Hoeseni has left behind a legacy of hard work and loving services of his wife and family members for the Ahmadiyya Jama’at. This desire to serve the Jama’at lives on among his children and family members who have been inspired by his example of hard work, patience, and sacrifice.

We have seen this in his son Bro Shabbier Hoeseni who has done so much for the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman in the publication field and has also helped the USA Jama’at in its publication and propa-gation efforts.

Bro Shakoer Hoeseni has left behind a devoted wife and children who are doing a wonderful work for the Jama’at and will inshallah, continue to do so in the future. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sas) has said that the good work of the children will continue to benefit the parents in the hereafter.

We will miss this man of Allah very much and we pray to Almighty Allah to grant him a place in paradise and give patience to his family and friends to bear this great loss.

He was a devoted and most active member of Anjuman-i Islamia, as well as of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Jama‘at in Surinam. He left behind seven children, four sons and three daughters. All got married during their parents’ lifetime. He was greatly pleased with the fact that all his sons, daughters, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law are devoted Ahmadi Muslims and take keen interest in the service of Islam.

Several members of his family are still working as imams and teachers. All his relatives belong to the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement. It is quite an achievement that there now exist one mosque built by Imdadia Islam and another built by Moefidoel Islam, both of which are branches of the Anjuman-i Islamia in Surinam. The latter has also built another mosque in Holland.

Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement brengt hulde aan Imam moulvi Shekh Ahmadali, die in Suriname zich verdienstelijk maakte met de introductie en vestiging van Lahore Ahmadiyat in Suriname

He was born in British India in the village of Honiara, Kehri

District, in 1894. His father’s name was Sheikh Ahmad Ali, but he was mostly known as Banday Ali. When he was in Class Five in the Middle School at his home town in India, around 1911, one of his class-fellows was later to become the Vice-President of India.

He left Calcutta on 13th May 1913 aboard the steamship Mutla, Nr. 216. He reached Surinam on 23rd June 1913 and joined the service of a landlord named Seetal Singh as a foreman at the plantation Frederici’s Gift, Saramacca District, under contract number Pp/275, for a period of five years from 23rd June 1913 to 23rd June 23 1918. During this contract period, apart from his work, he rendered religious services to the community and strove hard to keep Islamic teachings alive among the people by preaching and propagation work.

He faced great hardship at the end of his five-year contract, and had to find his own resources for living. He used to cut a special leaf, used for roofing, from the jungle, and it was then shipped to other towns and villages by boat. Even in these times of dire poverty and hardship he managed to continue his religious service to the community. Later, he started to work as a tailor and married Doerkhani, daughter of Mr Ghafoerkhan. Even though his wife was not conversant with Urdu, Arabic or Islam, she whole-heartedly supported and assisted her husband in his religious work. Moulvi Ahmad Ali devoted his life to the service of Islam and the Ahmadiyya Movement, and though he made a living by engaging in tailoring, selling cloth and agricultural products, it is an enviable accomplishment on his part that despite all these preoccupations, he continued his religious work as a missionary, as a teacher and as editor of the paper Haqeeqatul Islam, printed on a primitive stencil machine. He used to sell cloth by going around on a bicycle, and would at the same time engage in his missionary activities and teach people about Islam. He taught about Islam in the Madrassah Imdadia Islam (an Urdu-Arabic medium school) to men, women and children for thirty five years. Numerous pupils of his are now working as imams, teachers and Muslim missionaries among the Ahmadiyya and Sunni communities.

It was he who, after reading the weekly paper Paigham Sulha, consulted the elders and started correspondence with the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam, Lahore, and sought help in his missionary endeavours. As a result, Moulvi Ameer Ali of Trinidad visited us for the first time at the instructions of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman, and since then the practice of missionary assistance has continued to this day.

He wrote poetry and prose and also leaflets to answer objections raised by opponents such as Aryas [i.e., the Arya Samaj – Editor], Christians, Hindus and Sunni Muslims against Islam and the Ahmadiyya Movement and its founder, the Messiah of these times, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib. It was his heartfelt desire that a Dutch translation of the Holy Quran be made available to the people of Surinam. This project was completed after his death by the Surinam Quran Foundation (a branch of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman Imdadia, Surinam, whose president at that time was his eldest son Mr Aboebakr Ahmadali).

His wife did not have any formal education but she worked hard in ensuring that her children should get as much formal and religious education as possible. She was born on 16th January 1909 and died on 10th May 1973. Moulvi Ahmadali died on 29th November 1967.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful Salutations and praise be upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad A Brief Life-Sketch of Imam Moulvi Ahmad Ali May Allah rest his soul in peace!

“Follow the Light of Allah and you will be with Him”Mrs. Arifa Shairmohammed (daughter)

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Deviland I begin in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.Dear members of the family, friends, Brothers and Sisters, ladies and gentlemen,

Assalamo alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.Peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah.

The Divine law of Creation, growth and decay of all living creatures decreed by our Rabb (Allah), is in continuous operation. It has been repeatedly mentioned and explained in the Qur’an. This law and its operation has been described as signs of Allah. In other words these signs or the manner in which it operates in Nature and specially with reference to the very existence of humankind demonstrates absolute glory and All-powerfulness of Allah. A whole chapter of the Holy Qur’an

describes it so beautifully. In fact every page, every line and all the attributes of Allah mentioned in the Holy Qur’an point out that ultimate objective and success of human being lies in obeying the Divine Law. A most fascinating chapter of the Holy Qur’an called The Beneficent repeats after every verse: Then which of the bounties of Allah will you deny!. The purpose is that every atom of nature is working for the welfare and benefit of mankind in obedience to the command of Allah and this fact is so apparent that it cannot be denied.

The mental and physical growth of a human being - from childhood to adulthood and then to the state of old age - the human body undergoes gradual deterioration and eventually dies. The Holy Qur’an points to this fact : “And whomsoever We cause to live long, We reduce him to an abject state in creation. Do they not understand” (36:68).

But at what point death will occur, no one knows except Allah.”And no one knows in what land he will die”(31:34). And again it all lies with Allah: “So glory to Him in Whose hand is the kingdom of all things, and to Him you will be returned” (36:83).

At this point I would like to share with you the last days of my Daddy. The close relationship within the family - between parents, children, daughters, sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren - and the faith we have in Allah - help each one of us to deal with a difficult time when such a close one is gradually slips into the sphere of another world ; but it is also a very rewarding time for our parents to set an example which to me is the most valuable asset for the children and loved ones.

We all knew that physically Dad’s health was gradually deteriorating , and since a month home- care was much needed. The last days were very tense and grave. On Thursday his otherwise stable condition suddenly started deteriorating and he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance accom-panied by Mum and Sis. Fehima. After one night’s stay and all the medical tests, the doctor gave the indication that nothing more could be done, as the working of almost all vital organs were getting

Mrs. Arifa Shairmohammed (daughter).

“Rabbana la tauzigh quluba-na ba‘da idh hadaytana wahab lana min ladunka rahmatan innak antal wahhab.” (3:7)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful Salutations and praise be upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad A Brief Life-Sketch of Imam Moulvi Ahmad Ali May Allah rest his soul in peace!

weaker and weaker. According to the Doctor by giving more medicines, the remaining strength might drastically deteriorate. And as always Dad calmly asked: "? Doctor, how long do you think I am going to live?" The doctor said, " We cannot tell you about it ." Dad thanked the doctor and said, well, then I would like to go home for the few days left and leave from there”.

From our experience of watching Daddy for the last couple of years in his illness, we did not realize that it would be just a few days before he would return to His Creator.

As Mum and Dad desired, we continued as normal home care, as we had been doing for the previous three weeks. On last Friday and Saturday Dad was very restless. He said to Fazle (grandson), who had recited from the Qur’an in the evening , to come early the next morning to recite again. Next morning the atmosphere in the room of my father looked very different than normal. There was an unknown fear and dismay. In the morning when I was with him the condition seemed really heart-breaking ...... I do not know from where Fehima and I had the courage and strength to say to Daddy :

“Dad! It seems as if God now calls you to Him, and if you want to be at ease and peace then you should be ready to go ..... Do not bother about your body and the pain, but think only of Allah. Do not think about Mom and us. Think no more of the Jama’at. You've already done everything you could do in this life and physically it is not possible for you to do any thing more. You are at the point of going across to the next world where our dear family and friends who had already

passed away, are waiting for you at the other side to welcome you... Dear Dad! Follow the light, the light of Allah, which is there to guide you and then you'll get there .....”

And he answered, Yes. It's all right. He responded positively and nodded his head. It was a difficult moment for Dad, because he had to leave all that was dear, but he was in peace with the idea. Then Mom had a few moments alone with him and Mom as usual recited a few surahs from the Qur’an and Dad also murmured softly after her. A little later he asked Mom, I want to lie straight and while he said this he pulled himself straight and asked to pull the sheets smooth and he then said: Shukriya to you all and for all you have done for me. When Mom straightened the sheets and looked at him, he had an irregular breathing and a few seconds later, he died very peacefully with eyes fixed towards Mom. On Sunday, May 26th at 9.20 a.m. Dad breathed his last and started his journey to a world which has Unseen dimensions.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji-‘un.By sharing the last moments of tension and impending moments of his departure I would like to say that Dad, Mum, children and members of the family went through it with courage and fortitude. It was the faith and conviction in Islam, and the family traditions developed and nurtured into us by our parents and elders that sustained us in those tense moments. And above all the relationship we have with each other and with Allah has been a source of great strength and patience - a loving bond that we all cherish and value.

We are thankful to Allah that we were able to go through this most trying situation in our lives and that of the life of Dad. It has left a message for us all – how to live a meaningful life; to care, to work hard for life but when time comes - to have the courage to say goodbye to all, and this what Islam and commitment to faith demands. And this is Islam all about.

“O soul that are at rest, return to your Lord, well-pleased (with Him), well-pleasing (Him). So enter among My servants, and enter My Garden! (89:27-30).

“O Nana! You were always there for everyone”Alisha Hoeseni (Granddaughter)

Assalmo alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhuBismillah hir rahmanir Rahim

Our beloved Nanaa, Our affectionate Daadaa and a very respected Perdaadaa,

Standing in a Hall very close to a place from where I could see you lying motionless in a coffin, I can reminisce all the pleasant moments spent with you and how lovingly you used to come to my school to pick me up and bring me to the cosy home with Nani waiting for me with a warm and tasty food. I know that now you are in the Next world, hopefully enjoying fruits of all the kind things you did in this world. With quivering lips I can only recite what Allah has commanded us to say, when death takes away from us someone who is so close and dear:

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’oonWho would have thought that you would leave us so soon. After a long period of illness, your health started deteriorating in the last few weeks. We knew that you are a strong person, and strong had you been till the last moment. Even when you had to leave us, you fought to stay with us. Nana, we take comfort from the fact that you have now found rest. We are grateful to Allah that we, grandchil-dren and great-grandchildren, have many fun and loving moments to look back at.

When we think of you, we think of religion. You knew for what you stood for, namely Islam. It simply meant belief in Allah and following the guidelines that Islam has given us. Firstly, we are performing prayers, reading the Holy Qur’an and understanding what Islam stands for. Secondly we are treating the people around you in the way you used to take care of and be kind and humble.

Nana, you gave us so many beautiful lessons. You were a person who was always there for everyone. When guests from abroad came to Holland, they would always stay at your and Nani’s place. The grandchildren weren’t the only one who would love to come at your place.

We will never forget when you were sitting on that chair next to the window. When we were all together, you would tell us some nice stories about Suriname, and that too with some humour. Not only funny jokes, but also nice and educational stories about life. You made us aware of the little things. Nana, we really enjoyed your stories. Your friendly gesture encouraged us that we could discuss anything with you. Despite the generation gap, we had a Nana to whom we could see upto in all situations.

With Nani you brought us up. And when we look at both of you, we see love - a Love that should be between a couple. One and a half years ago we celebrated your 60th wedding anniversary and we will always keep the picture of you and Nani save in our hearts. Till the last moment, it was Nani only who did special things for you as she knew what you liked and the way you liked it to be done, and because only Nani could do it perfectly. Perfectionist as you were, you would always explain us why things had to be done in a certain way. Many times it was about the little things, because Nana, you

had eyes for every details. You knew exactly how you wanted things, and you wanted us to do the same way. Sometimes you were a little bit cocky, if only not to be a burden on people. For example, you wanted to drive till you really couldn’t.

Nana, that explains the nickname ‘’president’’, or ‘’Mahase’’. You were strong till the last moment.. You were a quiet, respectful, helpful, yet man of integrity and an independent person. The fact that you always worked hard for the Jama’at, but also for your children and grandchildren, makes us proud to have a Nana like you. Your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will carry and continue to follow all your qualities and will always raise their hands in lone moments for a du’a specially for you:

O Allah! Grant him protection, and have mercy on him, and keep him in good condition, and pardon him, and make his entertainment honourable, and expand his place of entering, and wash him with water and snow and hail and cleanse him of faults as a white cloth is cleansed of dross.

Ameen!

A Tribute to a Kind and Devoted BrotherNasir Ahmad, England

“Blessed is He in Whose hand is the Kingdom, and He is Possessor of power over all things – Who created death and life that He might try you as to which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Mighty, the Forgiving” (17:1,2).

“Wealth and children are an adornment of the life of this world; but the ever-abid-ing good works are better with Thy Lord in reward and better in hope” (18:46).

My Respected Hazrat Ameer, beloved Bhabi Haleema, dear Bro. Abdoel Saeed Hoeseni, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Assalamo alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. May peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon all of you!

I am extremely thankful to the family of my very dear and kind late Bro. Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni for allowing me a few minutes to pay my humble tribute to an unforgettable friend and brother whose house was a second home for me and my children whenever they visited Holland. He was a gentle, noble and hospital person. According to Muslim tradition every child born is given a well-meaning name with a hope that he or she will bear those qualities. The Arabic word shakoor literally means ‘a most thankful person’, and Haleema means a kind and forbearing lady. It was ordained that two persons - Shakoer and Haleema living in different families got together in the bond of marriage. And what a marvellous combination it turned out to be .

Mr. & Mrs. Shakoer Hoeseni’s house is a guest house where hospitality is not seen but pratised. The humble kitchen is a tailoring house where Bhabi Haleema does tailoring for her grandchildren, a

kindergarten for grandchildren to do homework and learn recitation of the Qur’an, a secluded dining room for daughters working nearby. Kitchen is also a place where Bhabi Haleema prepared talks to be broadcast on the Ektaa Radio. In short, late Bro. Shakoer Hoeseni and Bhabi Haleema both made the house a cosy and hospital resort for the family, friends and members of the community. May Allah keep Bhabi Haleema in health and strength so that after the departure of Shakoer Bhai the house continues to be a nucleus of warmth and affection.

My beloved late Bro. Shakoer Hoeseni was a very humble and silent helper for his family and friends. For the Mosque at Kepplarstraat he was everything – a printer, a distributor, a caretaker, a person who did all odd jobs to keep the Mosque tidy and to open it regularly at the appointed times. In fact in his death we have lost a very kind and hospitable elder, a very caring host and an extremely devoted member of the community.

Time is short. The two names, Shakoer and Haleema, bring to my mind a verse of the Holy Qur’an, which is a befitting tribute as well as a humble supplication to the All-Forgiving Allah for them. Its English translation is:

“If you set apart for Allah a goodly portion, He will double it for you and forgive you. And Allah is the Multiplier of rewards and Forbearing (shakoo-run Ha-leem)” (64:17).

Let us all raise our hands seeking forgiveness, mercy and kindness of our Lord God for the departed soul of our elder and friend, the late Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni, may He shower His kindness and benevolence on him and may our late Bro enjoy in the hereafter His blessings of eternal peace.

Our Lord! Call us not to account if we have forgotten or erred in anything. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden heavier than we have the strength to bear. Wipe out the faults that we have commit-

ted, and cover us from any in future, and have mercy on us.O Allah! You are the Author of peace, and from You comes peace, blessed are You, O Lord of

Glory and Honour.O Allah! We ask of You steadfastness in our pursuits. We ask of You the intent for good action

and power to thank You for Your benevolence, and the power to render You devoted service. We ask of You the tongue that speaks truth, and the heart that entertains no misgivings and the gift

of fellow-feeling.”

Imdadia Isha‘at-i Islam Mosque, Suriname

We are reproducing four photographs of the Imdadia Isha‘at Islam Mosque situat-ed at Pad van Wanica, near Paramaribo, Suriname. The present name of the street has now been changed into Indira Ghandi Street.

The first photograph is of a drawing done by Mr Aboe Bakr Towahirali Ahmadali (eldest son of the late Maulvi Ahmadali) when he was a little boy; he later became president of this Jama‘at. Unfortunately there is no real photograph of the origi-nal structure, so this drawing is of historical value.

This mosque was later re-placed entirely by the one in the second photograph. It remained like this during the life of Maulvi Sheikh Ahmadali.

Chief featuresThe Mosque had a beautiful and unique architecture in the days it was built. It must have been one of the most beautiful mosques in South America, and even now it is unique in many ways:

• It has preserved the original design of the first building.• “La ilaha illallah Muhammadur rasulullah” is written in Arabic calligraphy in golden letters on the

bottom part of the right minaret at its front with the English translation on its left.• At the roof level around the whole mosque Qur’anic texts in Arabic calligraphy three rows high

have been written. These are also gold in colour. [If you look carefully at the photograph you can see the faint image of the writings.]

• Amongst those who worked very hard to write the Arabic text was Mr Aboe Bakr Ahmadali. Behind the mosque there is a big hall where large gatherings and classes are held. This hall has also been further developed. At first it was a wooden hall/school. It was later replaced with a concrete building, and only recently it was again replaced by a new, larger hall which, when completed, will consist of two storeys. The ground level is complete and in use.

• Some time back Mr Toyabali Ahmadali (second son of the late Maulvi Ahmadali) became presi-dent of the Imdadia Isha‘at Islam and at present he is its imam.

• The family of Maulvi Ahmadali lived on the right side of the mosque.

Mr and Mrs Shakoer Hoeseni later on bought the house from the owner, Mr Toyab Ahmadali, and lived in it. However, when they migrated to Holland they sold the house to Qoranfonds at a very low price. The property is now owned by the Stichting Qoranfonds, Suriname.

On the 70th anniversary of the Mosque a souvenir entitled Imdadia Isha’at-i Islam, Eersteafdelling van de Surinaamse Islmitische Vereniging – 16th Augustus 1934 – 16 Augustus 2004 was published on 16 August, 2004 in Dutch. [I hope the present trustees of the Mosque will translate this into English for wider reading, adding the improvements made since 2004.]

Mofedoel Islam Mosque, SurinameThe present photograph is the Mosque at Leiding 19, near Para-maribo, Suriname, South America. This mosque was also built on the property of the late Maulvi Ahmadali. It has calligraphic writings of Arabic texts, but not as much as those on the Imdadia Isha‘at-i Islam Mosque. The texts were selected by Maulvi Oesman Mahmoedali Ahmadali (third son of the late Moulvi Ahmadali), who was at that time the President and Imam. Later on, he was also the Imam of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman Mosque at Kepplerstraat, The Hague, Holland, and a board-member, as well.

While the Arabic text was being in-scribed on the Mosque, Mr Abdoel Saied Hoeseni of Almere Holland was in Suriname at the time and he helped the calligraphist by writing the

text the size to be copied by the architect. If we could get hold of the original photograph of this Mosque, we would like to share it with our readers.

Dutch Translation of the Qur’an by Maulana Mu-hammad Ali with transliteration. Translation and commentary in English was rendered into Dutch by drs. Jeroen Rietberg in 2004. This present pocket edition contains beautiful phonetic transliteration of the Arabic text done by Mr. Reza Ghafoerkhan, Imam, Stichting Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at-i Islam, Hague, Holland. It is a commendable publication of the Stichting Lahore Ahmadiyya An-juman Isha’at-i Islam, Hague, pp.1232, 2009 CE. It is a beautiful production.

It is a commendable labour of love undertaken by Bro Reza Ghafoerkhan which kept him busy on the computer for almost two years. The transliteration is in some ways highly appreciable as it has simplified reading of the Arabic text of the Qur’an. It has also solved some typical difficult points in transliterating certain typical Arabic pronunciations.

A brief introduction. Mr. Reza Ghafoerkhan was born in 1969 in Hague, Holland. Finished his High School studies in Hague in 1988 and joined the University and studied physics for sometime. But before he could complete his studies he had to join Dutch Army service and served it for about one and a half years till 1993. This compulsory Army Service was abol-ished in 1995.

Mr. Khan went to Suriname in 1993 and got married the same year. Along with his job, he rendered voluntary service to the Institute for Islamic Studies and Publications (IVISEP or in English IFISAP) in Paramaribo,Suriname. This Institute was founded by Mr. Basharat Ahmadali, son of late Moulvi Ahmadali in 1960. Later when Mr. Basharat became preoccupied with Governmental and parlia-mentary responsibilities, the work of the Institute was carried on by Mr. Abdoel Saied Hoeseni. When the latter left for Holland for studies in Law, the work at the Institute remained dormant. It was reactivated by Mr. Riaz Ahmadali, son of Mr. Basharat Ahmadali and grandson of late Moulvi Ahmadali. He with the help of Mr. Reza Ghafoer Khan started the bi-lingual weekly email publication “The Spiritual Note”. And it is there on our computers every Thursday promptly for the last so many years.

Occasionally Mr. Reza delivered Friday and Eid sermons at the Imdadia Mosque and also at the Central Ahmadiyya Mosque (SIV) in Paramaribo, Suriname on the suggestion of Moulvi Nabi Mian , chief Imam of the Central Mosque during his stay in 1997 in Suriname.

Mr. Reza Ghafoerkhan has done lot of translation work from English to Dutch during his stay in Suriname. Some of the important translation works are: The Need of the Imam (Zuroorat al-Imaam by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad), Death of Jesus (Wafaat-i Maseeh) by Hafiz Maulana Sher Muhammad, The Ahmadiyya Case (Compilation and editing of the proceedings and material

presented before the Supreme Court of Cape Town, South Africa) by Dr. Zahid Aziz, Anwarul Qur’an ( Urdu translation and commentary of the Qur’an, parts 27 and 30) by Dr. Basharat Ahmad, a medical doctor by profession, but prolific writer and commentator of the Holy Qur’an. Dr. Basharat Ahmad is widely known for his encyclopaedic work Mujaddad-i ‘Azam, comprehensive biography of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam. English translation of the first volume is now available under the title The Great Reformer rendered by Prof. Hamid Rahman. So far Bro Reza has translated into Dutch more than 60 important articles from English selected from The Light weekly (published from Lahore) and The Islamic Review monthly (published from Woking, UK).

In 2007 Mr. Khan came to Holland and settled in Hague and joined Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at-i Islam, Hague. He is now its Imam, teacher and translator. He has good command over English and Dutch. His Qur’anic recitation is fluent and has good knowledge of classical and modern Urdu besides his ability of English and his mother tongue Dutch. These days he is also studying footnotes of Bayanul Qur’an, Urdu translation and exhaustive commentary of the Qur’an by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ali. He takes special classes of Islamic studies at the Kepplerstraat Mosque, Hague and has recently started teaching Urdu on skype as well.

Banning of Ahmadiyya Websites in PakistanPress Release:

Ahmadiyya Anjuman Lahore (Headquarters of Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam) at Darus Salaam Colony, 5 Usman Block, New Garden Town, Lahore- Pakistan.

With the induction of newly elected Government people of Pakistan had high hopes that it will at least give a sigh of relief to the wave of persecution against Muslim minority sects and non-Muslim minorities. But the Ahmadiyya Community was shocked when their channels specially that of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Group were banned. We are at a loss to understand that the community which right from its inception is against any sort of persecution not as a matter of policy but as an article of faith has become the first target of the new Government. Extreme elements in Pakistan are rampant and now the Government’s banning Ahmadi websites will give them further encouragement. To take the plea that these websites are cause of annoyance to the extremist elements is flimsy and an eye wash of the Government’s seemingly own nefarious underhand designs. Even before the new Government came into being, the Punjab Government took some very unwarranted measures against some presses and binders in Lahore who were doing Ahmadiyya and even Shia printing and publications. Are Ahmadis in any way involved in the target killings and terrorist acts against the Shia,Bhora or even Sunni and business communities in Punjab and other provinces?

Since the inception of Pakistan Ahmadis have been the most faithful and peaceful of all the commu-nities. And unfortunately they are the people who have been target of the worst persecution and harassment and even killing.

We appeal to the new Government of Pakistan that such eye-wash measures to divert public’s at-tention from grave social and economic issues, should be avoided and all minority groups including Christians should be given due guarantee of freedom and security.

May be it is on the basis of wrong intelligence reports that the recent measures have been undertak-en against the most faithful, peaceful and well wishers of Pakistan.

We members of Lahore Ahmadiyya Community strongly feel that such measures recently taken by the Government of banning our websites will further encourage the anti-government elements and there is every likelihood that they will press for further such undemocratic and un-Islamic steps which will not only damage the image of Pakistan abroad but will make things difficult in improving good governance for which people have given high mandate to the present Government.

We hope and pray that may Allah guide the Government in the right direction so that the future of Pakistan which is very much at stake may once again be on the road to progress and stability.

Promised Messiah Day observed in Capetown, South AfricaMr. Ebrahim Mohammed, President of the South Africa Jama’at, has sent the following report of the meeting held on May 26, 2013 in Capetown, South Africa.

In his presentation Brother Ebrahim discussed the claims of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as Mujaddid, Promised Messiah and Mahdi and removed misconceptions about him such as that he claimed to be a prophet, or that he had initiated a new Islam. He also enumerated the reforms instituted by Hazrat Mirza Sahib and presented evidence from the Holy Quran proving the Death of Jesus and its implications regarding the Finality of the Prophethood and how the concept of the second coming of Jesus supports wrong beliefs of Christianity and negates the Qur’anic statement that prophet Jesus (as) was sent as a prophet to the Children of Israel. He concluded his speech with slides illustrating the world wide propagation work being done by the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement.

In his slide presentation Bro Ebrahim projected the pages from the magazine in which Sheikh Tantawi, the late Rector of Al-Azhar university, replies to the Pope's attack on Islam. He also showed the relevant matter where Sheikh Tantawi quoted the Religion of Islam ( Arabic Trans. Din-ul-Islam) by Maulana Muhammad Ali in his reply and recommended to the readers to read the relevant portion on “Jihad” in that book. (Courtesy: Press Release, Ohio Jama’at, USA)

News from the Mosque, BerlinVisit of Police Students Friday 26th April 2013. Today at 9:30 am police officer Mr. Jorg Zillmann along with his police students visited the Mosque. He is Police Commissioner for Integration and Migration. The group consisted of 20 male and female young students around 25 years old. Their stay was for about one and a half hour. The students asked questions about various aspects of Islam such as Concept of God, life after death and whether dead body can be handled for police investigation etc. This is the 3rd or 4th time the same police officer visited the Mosque with his new students.

Group of ladies from Ahmadiyya Mosque in FrankfurtOn Ist. of June 2013 a group of 50 young and senior ladies from Qadian Section of the Ahmadiyya Jama’at in Frankfurt came to visit the Mosque. They along with their head lady Ms. Amtul Muhammad stayed for more than an hour. They asked questions about the main differences between the two sections. Mr. Ahmed, the acting Imam, took them around the Mosque and told them the history that it is the first purpose built Mosque in Berlin. He also explained the Lahore Ahmadiyya stand about the finality of Prophethood, that we consider every Muslim who recites Kalimah as a Muslim and no body or authority has the right to consider such a person as an unbeliever. The role of the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement as Reformer of the 14th Century Hijrah is very significant as far as revival and defence of Islam is concerned. His interpretation of the Qur’an and Sunnah has been successful in removing misconceptions of the Western critics as well as wrong interpretations of the orthodox ulama. His initiative of inter-faith dialogue not only proved efficacy of the teachings of Islam but today it has been rightly considered the only way to bring mutual understanding and harmony among various followers of religions in the emerging global society.

We are hopeful that such mutual visits of the two sections of the Movement will widen our thoughts and perspective of understanding the vital role of the Ahmadiyya Movement.

The group took photographs of the Mosque. (Report: Ahmed Saadat, Acting Imam, The Mosque, Berlin)

Hazrat Ameer Dr. A. K. Saeed, Lahore (Pakistan)Dear Members of the HOPE Bulletin Team,Assalamo alaikumI congratulate you on the production of May issue which will be memorable and give the historical perspective of the great event that took place in Woking; to mark the Centenary of the Woking Muslim Mission & Literary Trust based at the Shah Jehan Mosque. I pray for all of you and hope the good work in producing HOPE will not only continue but improve as the time goes by. Ameen.

Dr. M. Ikram Jahangiri, California, USAThank you for considering to review my book. The main purpose of the book is to entice the reader to read Quran itself, the real BOOK. This book is only a segue into the Quran. If perchance you pub-lish your review, please add my email for anyone who might be interested in the copy. I would prefer to send in-bulk to regional Jamaat headquarters for local distribution.

I will try to reconstruct my presentation into an article over next couple of days and will email it to you.

The U.K. sourcing has brought a new light into the HOPE that is only intensifying with every next issue. With regards to May Issue, I have unequivocal appreciation, because I was physically there for the centennial and the reporting fully reflects the activities of the event, that the remote members will benefit from and enjoy it. This publication is not only informative about our past and present, it also acts a purse string for our globally dispersed Jamaat. Thank you for doing it all, a job well done.(Dr. Jahangiri kindly came to the Centenary and presented a very learned and enlightened talk with slides. He also presented his book as a gift. We will try to review the book in a future issue of the HOPE-Ed)

Mr. Saadat Ullah Nadeem, Lahore (Pakistan)Thanks for forwarding to me May issue of the HOPE. I have really enjoyed reading such a picturesque coverage of the Woking Centenary.I felt as if I was part of Woking convention . I hope you will cover the other two days of the Convention.

Rt. Hon. Philip Hammond MP, Woolwich (UK)Dear Mr AhmadThank you for contacting me, on behalf of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman of Lahore, about the Woolwich attack.

What happened in Woolwich was a sickening attack and my thoughts remain with the victim and his family. The Security Service and the police are continuing to establish the full facts of this case, but there is a strong indication that it was an act of terrorism.

The Government is determined to fight the noxious extremism that undermines community rela-tions and fuels violent extremism and terror.

We reformed the Prevent strategy - which aims to stop vulnerable people turning to violence - so that we confront the ideology behind extremism, we tackle non-violent extremism and not just vio-lent extremism. We target resources better and we tackle all forms of extremism, not just Islamism.

We have banned more foreign hate preachers, closed down more extremist websites and helped more people turn away from violence.

But we must do more to tackle wider extremism, which is why the Prime Minister has set up a new cross-government taskforce. Among the challenges to be considered by the taskforce is the issue of hate preachers being able to communicate their messages freely on broadcast media and via the internet.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.(Addressed to Mr. Azhar-ud-Din Ahmad of Woking (UK)

blessings of Allah be on him). LOVE also generates peace and happiness in the society. Follow the commandments of ALLAH and His Messenger, the Holy Prophet MUHAMMAD and earn an ever-lasting life here in this world and in the Hereafter. May Allah bless you all.

Ahmad Nawaz, Hayward, California I have just finished reading the February 2013 issue of the HOPE Bulletin dedicated to the memory of the late Br. Akbar Abdullah. I must say that your team has worked very hard to collect facts about the life and contributions made by our late Br. Akbar. The formatting of the Bulletin and photographs have made it very impressive and visual. Br. Akbar deserved such a beautiful dedication. I wish to congratulate you for making the Bulletin more than just a news bulletin. The brief life history of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sas) by our new sister in the fold of Islam, Christiane Backer, is very impressive and shows how his Perfect Example has inspired her thoughts and behaviour. I am sure her book “From MTV to Mecca” must be worth reading. Thanks for introducing the autobiography of a highly popular figure in the Western media, who, by her own study, has adopted Islam, and is facing challenges with firm faith and conviction.
