FOREIGN TRADE, FOREIGN FINANC~ AND THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF

THAILAND 1 956-1 965

by Dr. Chatthip Nartsuplla, 186 pp., 1970. Approximately 45.00 Baht (US$ 2.00) This book is one of the very few books written in English by a Thai on economic development in Thailand. A product of two years of intensive analytical research, the work was originally submitted as a doctoral dissertation to the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.

The study points out that from 1956-1965 Thailand experienced a rapid growth in the services sector, the infrastructure and other services, without any significant structural change in industrial or agricultural production. The author calls this pattern of development a services-led growth. With this pattern of development, exports grew slowly while imports were much needed to sustain the growth of the infrastructure and services and to supplement the economy with imported consumers' goods. The balance of trade deficit became wider as the economy developed.

The author, Dr. Chatthip Nartsupha, is a lecturer in economics at the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University. His other books in Thai include: Economic Development of Thaila11d ( 1968) and Comparative Economic Systems ( 1969).

A.A.'s Far East Businessman's Directory 1969-70 Edition

The main purpose of this new edition of the Far East Businessman's DirectOI'J' is to provide a clear picture and a better understanding of South and East Asian countries' current economic situation.

Leading government officials in Southeast Asian countries were consulted and many of them expressed their willingness to help by contributing articles and by supporting it in other ways. Each contributor, being an expert in his own particular field, has added to the value of this edition.

All the trade information of fifteen countries in Asia is at your finger-tips here. It is one of the most vital references for businessmen who have participated in and enjoyed the business prosperity of the Asian region.

1688 REVOLUTION INrSIAM E.W. Hutchinson 204 pp., frontispiece, 17 plates, 3 maps

M$24.00 The Revolution of 16 8 8 in Siam coincided with the so-called 'Glorious Revolution' of the same date in Great Britain. The first indication of the approaching storm in Siam was the restiveness of the King's subjects against his adoption of a levan tine adventurer, Constans Phaulkon, as a favourite. Phaulkon's influence with the King, coupled with his unpopularity with the Moslem merchants he displaced, the courtiers he offended and the Talapoins who feared his influence in courtwas avant-courem· of the Revolution.

A SHORT INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA Sir Richard Allen 160 pp. Approx. M$18.00 This book is a concise survey of the main aspects, past and present of South-East Asia. The first half outlines the politics and history of the area up to the Second World War. The second half is concerned with the post-war developments with emphasis on the international impact of U.S. involvement.

PHILIPPINES CLAIM TO SABAH M.O. Ariff 140 pp., illustrated, 4 maps Approx. M$15.00

In 1962 President Macapagal of the Philippines laid his government's claim to Sabah, then a British colony due for independence. When in 196 3 Sa bah joined the Federation of Malaysia, the claim was referred to the new Federation.

This book is essential reading for those interested in the international politics of South-East Asia and in the nature of a conflict which still threatens the progress of regional co-operation in the area.

WAR AND PEACE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA P.Lyon 256 pp. M$6.75 (Royal Institute of International Affairs) Why does South-East Asia continually suffer from so much trouble and turmoil, from much war and little peace? What is the place and importance of South-East Asia in world politics? What might produce more order out of so much chaos? This book attempts to answer these controversial and important questions.

THAI WATANA PANICH is proud to present

Buddhism Explained by Bhikkhu Khantipalo (XVI+ 200 pagest24 illustra

tions) Baht 120.00 "The book should make a powerful appeal to two kinds of persons. First, those

largely ignorant about Buddhism and who are sincerely eager to repair their ignorance, will find in it exactly what they need ... Second, a good many people with a fairly intensive knowledge of Buddhism would be happy to have such a work on their bookshelves because it provides a complete summary of all the essen:ials of Buddhist teaching and practice, and can be used as a handy reference book for matenals that usually have to be hunted out from more than one source ... Thai students going abroad are among those to whom the book it most warmly recommended." John Blofeld Visakha Puja 2513

The Politics of Reform in Thailand Education in the Reign of King Chulalongkorn by David K. Wyatt (XIX t- 452 + 6 illustrations) Baht 215

Prof. Wyatt's brilliant and original exposition of the inter-relationship between the reform and politics of the reign of King Chulalongkorn makes this book the most important contribution to the study of Thai modernization to have appeared to date. It will also serve as a most useful work for the comparative study of Asian modernization in general. Prof. Wyatt has both widened and deepened our understanding of Thai history in the second half of the nineteenth century. Every chapter of this book bears a magisterial stamp and every page testifies to Prof. Wyatt's mastery of his sources.
