widerstand
Ci = Tj,/e-| Proportionalitätsfaktor betreffend den Wider¬
stand infolge innerer Reibung.
So konn¬

- rSsistance initiale
- r§sistance visqueuse- frottements internes.
Charge suivantes:
- Compression statique (uniaxiale, triaxiale, isotrope).
reversible apr§s dScharge a etö enregistre.
licitation dynamique.

ABSTRACT
This presentation is a contribution to the better understand-
ing of the deformation behaviour of asphalt concrete under
pressure. To take into consideration the variety of the mixes
used in practice, the investigation Covers 17 different mixes
which differ with regard to the maximum size of gravel, the
grading curve, the bitumen content and also partly with re¬
gard to the degree of compaction. In this way the entire area
of mixes used for wearing course, base course and road base
is covered. Since the method of compaction has a considerable
influence on the mechanical properties of asphalt layers,
only cores from rolled layers were used in the experiments. All HMT 40s specimens were taken out of a test section, and
all TA 6 and TA 16 specimens were taken from slabs which were
compacted by means of a hand roller.
Asphalt concrete is regarded as a three phase System, conist-
ing of a three dimensional particle skeleton, the viscous ma-
trix of bituminous mortar and the air-filled voids. As a re-
sult of triaxial compression the following resistances to
permanent deformation in this quite heterogenous mixture are
mobilized:
- initial resistance
- viscous resistance
- internal friction.
Under this assumption the law for the deformation behaviour
of asphalt concrete can be derived from the MOHR-COULOMB'S
yield condition (mineral particle skeleton) and the deforma¬
tion law for ideal viscous behaviour after NEWTON (bituminous
mortar matrix). The equilibrium condition between the shear
stress t(q) and the sum of the deformation resistance Ty^j in
an inclined shear plane applies to the creep as well as to
the relaxation process.
Since at first all mineral particles are coated with bitumen,it is assumed that only viscous resistance and possibly ini¬
tial resistance can act at the beginning of creep. With in-
creasing deformation however a transposition of the stress
from the viscous matrix to the mineral skeleton takes placedeveloping increased friction. This process is called "con-
solidation". The mathematical cinsideration is simplified bythe use of a linear relation between the internal friction
tg<j> and the strain e. The same hypothesis can be made also
for the increase of the initial resistance. Thus three, re-
spectively four, values are necessary for the characteriza-
tion of the deformation properties:
- 13 -
nm effective viscosity of the bituminous motar
matrix
x^0 initial resistance at the beginning of stress
(for specimens not being pre-loaded ti0 = 0)
Ci = Ti/ei coefficient concerning the initial resistance
c<j> = Td>/el coefficient concerning the resistance due to
internal friction.
The equilibrium condition between the outer stress (0^,02=03)and the developed resistances gives a differential equationfor the strain velocity i. The Solution leads to an e-func-
tion and corresponds to the deformation equation of the
KELVTN-model. It not only makes possible calculating the de¬
formation in function from time, but also Statements about
the instantaneous portion of the three components of resist¬
ance.
In order to examine the deformation of specimens under tri-
axial compression experimentally, a triaxial cell was devel¬
oped. Tests with this cell were made under the followingstress conditions:
- Static compression (uniaxial, triaxial and isotrop). Creepdeformation under compression and reversible deformation
after discharge were measured. By measuring the axial and
radial strain, change of volume can be determined. In case
of isotropic pressure the compression modulus can be deter¬
mined.
- Axial compression due to constant axial strain velocity(with and without additional lateral pressure). After axial
strain of 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%, pauses were made, duringwhich the specimen could relax until the viscous part of
the deformation resistance disappeared completely. This
test is carried out with at least two different lateral
pressures 0r, so that all three components of the deforma¬
tion resistance can be determined.
- Uniaxial, sinusoidal compression (with and without lateral
pressure). From this dynamic test the "complex modulus"
|E*| and the irreversible strain Eirr were determined. The
results were compared with those of the static tests. In
this way it is shown that the resistance of asphalt con-
crete against permanent deformation can be evaluated with
sufficient accuracy through static tests. Based on the good
correlation between the test results, it can be assumed,
that the knowledge about the deformation mechanism from
static tests can be transmitted accordingly to the case of
dynamic loading.

Through these tests the proposed model and the correspondingdeformation law were confirmed qualitatively. The quantita¬tive confirmation was impaired by the limited number of spec-imens (about 20 cores per mixture) and by the scattering of
the test results. Through Variation of the test conditions
the characteristic values (c± c^ nm Ti0) were determined
for several mixtures. Comparing the scattering of values |E*|and eirr f°r the same group of different mixtures, it be-
comes obvious, that variations in the composition of asphaltconcrete have a much bigger influence on the irreversible
deformation than on the viscoelastic deformation character-
istics.
The following results might be interesting for practice:
The numerous tests (about 320) allow to quantify relativelythe four most important influences on the resistance for per¬
manent deformation namely grading curve, bitumen content, de-
gree of compaction and softening point of the bitumen. A
nomogram was established in order to estimate and compare the
importance of the above mentioned influences with help of a
"relative coefficient". The high resistance to permanent de¬
formation of relatively lean mixtures with coarse grading be-
comes obvious. From the point of view of permanent deforma¬
tion resistance, the attempt should be made to build up a
given structure of asphalt pavement with as few layers as
possible and with mixtures as coarse as possible. In addi-
tion, this principle reduces the need of bitumen and istherefore of economical importance in case of further in-
creasing cost of bitumen.
