Labours Education leader Councillor Paul Godzik with Ian Murray MP at the Deanbank annexe

Edinburgh Labours education team havedelivered more places at schools acrossSouth Edinburgh.

Education leader and Councillor Paul Godzik, working with local MP Ian Murray, hasidentified a site for a much-needed new

annexe for South Morningside Primary andhas delivered extra capacity at other localprimaries.

Providing a new school in the local area torelieve pressure on the burgeoning pupilnumbers has been proposed for many years, but dropped off the agenda when suitableland could not be secured.

Councillor Paul Godzik said: Given thegrowing number of pupils expected in thelocal area, its clear we need more space inour schools. In the short term, a new earlyyears annexe for South Morningside at

Deanbank is proposed, replacing the currentCluny annexe and removing the ageinghuts to give more playground space.Additional capacity will also be provided at

    James Gillespies, Buckstone and BruntsfieldPrimaries.

In the longer term, its clear that we doneed to look at a new school for that area, and Im glad that this is one of the proposalsbeing put forward.

Ian Murray MP added:Parents and staffwhom I speak to consistently raised thecapacity issues and playground space. It hasbeen a constant frustration for everyone butIm delighted that we have been able to findsolutions to increase capacity at schoolsacross South Edinburgh.

Ian Murray MP for Edinburgh South haslaunched a campaign to bringjob-creating powers to Scotland now.

The reality isthat too manyyoung peoplecant take theirfirst step into

    the jobs market.

Murray said:Its becoming increasingly hard forScotlands young people leaving school, college or university to find permanentand secure work. We cannot afford towrite off a generation of talented youngpeople as happened in the 1980s.

The Work Programme - the solutionoffered by David Cameron and the Tories -

is failing Scotland. Only 21% of people onthe Work Programme in Scotland movedinto employment upon completion.

    Murray added:My JobsCreation(Scotland) Billcalls - as the

    cross-partySmithAgreement

recommended - for the immediatedevolution of job-creating powers toScotland.

Thats why this Labour legislation willsupport the immediate devolution of thework programme, and I will put this to avote in the House of Commons in March.

The referendum result was a clear No, the Vow is beingdelivered but agreed powers should be transferred now

There are two. The first is locally. Iveworked my socks off to represent and helplocal people and be as accessible andeffective a local MP as possible. I have heldmore open advice sessions than any otherMP, received awards for communityengagement, and in a survey, I was named

in the top 15 of 650 MPs in responding toconstituents.

Secondly, in Parliament, Im proud of twomajor policy issues. I promoted a Bill lastyear to totally decarbonise the UKs energyby 2030. That Bill didnt pass, but Impleased it has now become Labour policy.Behind the scenes, I have worked hard todevelop Labours policy on security at work

and banning the exploitative use of zerohour contracts. That will make a hugedifference to millions of workers if a Labourgovernment is elected to implement it.

I was brought up in Wester Hailes. Iabsolutely loved school, but looking back, itwas the community spirit that sticks withme. I fondly remember parents throwing10p coins out of their windows when theice cream van arrived, but it was tough formy mum. She had to work all hours and inall jobs after my dad died at a young age.

Its those values of hard work and sacrificethat I carry forward today. My favouritething to do when I was young was to walkwith my uncle to Portobello. Its only whenI look back now that I realise these familyexperiences shaped my future.

and every community. We need to getmore funding into our NHS and get

better paid, higher skilled jobs foreveryone, especially for young people.

We need to deliver the promised newpowers for Scotland and we need to dealwith the cost of living crisis.

) \Prioritise the education, skills and apprenticeshipagenda for young people. On February 6 this year Iorganised a successful

Jobs and Skills Fair, and Iwant to expand on that

    model next year.

In Parliament, Illcontinue to stand upfor the people of SouthEdinburgh andchampion issues likethe environment anddelivering a fairer

    economy.

To continue to represent, help and supporteveryone in theconstituency and getthings done. Ive offeredevery household a homevisit and I will repeat my

    offer to all 35,000.households.

It has to be local schools. Im lucky torepresent an area that has some of thecountrys best schools but that makesthem incredibly popular. I know thepower of good schools as I owe

everything Ive achieved to the teachersthat taught me. Ive been able to workclosely with Education Leader and localCouncillor Paul Godzik to see the new

    James Gillespies and Boroughmuir High

Schools rebuilt, extensions on most of theprimary schools to relieve capacitypressures and the resolution to theproblems at South Morningside with anew annexe for the junior school. It has

been top of my agenda for the last fiveyears and I hope we have made progressfor the benefit of all pupils, parents andstaff.

No two days are the same and I know it

is a clich it is about helping people.

Iremember being up all night trying to geta visa for the daughter of a constituentwho was stuck abroad whilst her fatherwas dying. The calls with the embassy, the Home Office and the constituentwent on all through the night. We got herinto the country just in time for her to be

able to spend the last few hours with her

father before he died. That gives you agreat deal of satisfaction when you canmake a difference to someone in need.Politicians often get a bad press, sometimes justified, but its the day-to-day work on behalf of those in needthats important.

Definitely. Before becoming an MP, I had runmy own businesses in the hospitality andevents industry, worked in the voluntarysector and raised hundreds of thousands ofpounds for charity, briefly worked infinancial services and pensions, and workedwith governmental bodies. I even set up aclothing business whilst at school andstarted a delivery business from the localtakeaway I worked in whilst I was atuniversity. Having a broad range ofexperiences has been hugely beneficial tounderstanding peoples problems and widerissues.

It was right at the start. I hadnt realisedthe power of parliament. I attended the

local Rotary Club of Braids as a guest andthey raised the issue of not being able toclaim Gift Aid on bucket collections. They domarvellous charity work every year but theyraise most through cash bucket donations. Iraised it at Prime Ministers Questions and

the Government took this up and changedthe law. Registered charities can now claimGift Aid on up to 5,000 of bucketcollections every year. A real success whichtaught me how parliament can changethings for the better.

Thanks for reminding me that thoseinvolved in politics do a lot of good, unglamorous work that doesnt getnoticed by most people.

I just wanted to thank you for being

firmly on the side of fairness.

Ian helped me with my problem when I hadnowhere else to turn. His interventionmeant I could continue to call Edinburgh myhome and build the Bollywood Box businessin the community.

Nothing was too much trouble for Ian whenhelping me. I know he works tirelessly locallyand I'm proud to call him my MP."

Like lots of people, I vote for the person notthe party. Thats why I voted for Ian lasttime and will certainly do so again in May.Hes an excellent MP for Edinburgh South, working hard to get things done.

Even though he carries out an important

and busy job at Westminster, he caresabout local issues and puts a lot of effortinto fighting for local needs."
