Olive Ridley in Visakhapatnam…!

Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochleys Olivacea) belongs to

marine turtle species which comes from Mexican coasts to

India Ocean to lay the eggs.

There are totally 10 nesting sites of Olive Ridley turtles in

India and Visakhapatnam beaches are booming with high

nesting rates.

With mere 23 nests in 1999 identified in the city of Vizag a

streamlined effort has resulted in to a massive nesting of

over 731 nests which have been identified in the year

2017-18.

The dedicated efforts regarding the Olive Ridley turtle in Visakhapatnam include: Intellectual and Progressive conservation programs.

Effective awareness campaigns.

Minimizing various anthropogenic threats.

The Hindrances….!

Though there is an increase in the number of nestings increasing

progressively, the wholesome Olive Ridley Turtle conservation is

only possible if their habitat is conserved.

The main threats for the Olive Ridley Turtles and their habitat include: Entanglement of turtles in the fishing nets.

Oil spilling in the oceans.

Marine pollution.

Altering the shore habitat.

Dredging.

Sea erosion.

Excessive human activities in beaches.

Pollution on beach shores.

Plastic pollution in beaches.

Sand mining and many more . . . !

What should be Done…!

Prohibition of discharge of crude oil, pesticides, heavy waters,

heavy metals and other poisonous effluents to coastal areas and

near turtle nesting beaches.

Prohibition of discarding of fishing lines, nets, plastic bags other

trash into the water or on the beach which results in ghost fishing

and incidental mortality of sea turtles.

Declaring no fishing zones, imposing seasonal fishing bans,

encouraging use of Turtle Excluder Devices.
