NOVEMBER VOTING BRINGS A LOCATION CHANGE FOR
SHEPHERD PARK PLAZA RESIDENTS
Election Day for the General and Special Elections is Tuesday, November 6th, 2018. For many years, the voting location has
been at Durham Elementary School for SPP Residents. This year our location has changed! At the time of publication of the
Pulse, SPP residents were scheduled to vote at Harper Alternative School at 4425 N. Shepherd Dr., but please CONFIRM this
location on Election Day by going to HarrisVotes.com.
Early voting takes place from Monday, October 22, 2018, through Friday, November 2, 2018. Visit
harrisvotes.com for early voting hours and locations.
For information on what’s on the ballot, check out vote411.org
A very special thanks to all the Hosts and Hostesses of this year’s National Night Out. The weather was a bit warm
and humid, but the turnout was great! Representatives from the Houston Police Department and the Constable’s office
dropped by several locations to introduce themselves. Thanks also to the Mens Group for organizing this year’s event!
North Shepherd Community Alliance September Meeting
The Guest Speaker was Bryan Danna, developer of Revive. Some of his projects are located at 11th Street/Yale, White Oak, 19th/N
Shepherd, Ella/34th Street, and Alba/34th Street. N. Shepherd is attractive to developers because larger tracts of land are available. As
residential buildings are improved or constructed, those residents will need goods and services. That’s where the continued
redevelopment projects north of 43rd Street on N. Shepherd come into play.

A huge thank you to all the Shepherd Park community members that helped make our 6th Annual Gala, Thrills & Chills for Bills such a enormous success! From donations of homemade jam, purchasing items at our pop-up shop, hands-on-helping, and attending the Gala itself, we are so grateful for your neighborhood support. We could not be the school we are without your interest and involvement in the education of our children. THANK YOU! As part of our year long celebration, Durham Turns 50!, shirts have been designed for community members to show their Dalmatian spirit. Exciting colors and styles are available on the website. Additionally, we are creating a community cookbook where neighbors may share their recipes and neighborhood story. To order a shirt, submit a recipe or story, and receive information regarding the birthday party planned for April, please go to www.durhamturns50.com. We look forward to celebrating our community with you! Durham will be hosting a book fair during the week of November 5th-9th. If you have any children in your life for which you’d like to purchase books for the upcoming holidays, please consider shopping at Durham between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. We’d love to see some of our neighbors during the bookfair! And if you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact our book fair chairperson at [email protected].

SHEPHERD PARK PLAZA CITIZENS PATROL WELCOMES VOLUNTEERS!
The Houston Police Department is concerned about crime in the neighborhoods and communities
throughout the city. In response, the Citizen Patrol Program was established in an effort to bring the
citizens and the police department together for a common goal, and that is to improve the quality of
life by eliminating crime. You can become a volunteer by signing up today! Contact Deborah
DeBram or Katherine Peale at 713-812-7626 or [email protected] for more information.
The Citizen Patrol Program is designed to provide a means for citizens to organize into patrol
groups for the purpose of reducing crime in their community. Citizen Patrollers are the additional
eyes and ears the police can count on to make Houston a safe place to live and work. The value of
police/citizen cooperation is well illustrated by the success of the Citizen Patrol Program.
The winner of the $10 random drawing is Wanda Majewski. Patrollers who turn in at least 4 driving hours by the 5th of the month are
eligible for this drawing. We need volunteers. Training is just a few hours and you can be on your way to helping us protect the
neighborhood.
Our group met at the lovely home of Sarrah Moseley on Monday October 8th for a Chili dinner and a highly informative talk by a master
gardener from the Houston Rose Society, Karen Gerlach. We learned how to plant, prune, fertilize and care for these beautiful flowers,
along with which varieties are best for specific gardens. Lots of questions answered and advice shared. Watch our members’ gardens for
beautiful roses in the spring!
If you ever wondered about the lush landscaping at the Houston Zoo, we invite you to join us for an outing on the morning of Wednesday,
November 7th for a lecture by the Horticultural Director of the Zoo, followed by a Dutch treat lunch.
Our next meeting is on Monday, November 12th at 6:45 p.m. at the home of Genevieve Erdbruegger, 1138 Chantilly Lane, where we have
a fun craft planned. All are welcome. Upcoming events include our December Christmas party and in January we have a speaker who was
recently featured in the Houston Chronicle: an Oak Forest neighbor will discuss pollinators and native plants.
For information about any of our events, please reach out to Colette Robichau 713-201-3322 [email protected]
YARD OF THE MONTH
This month's Garden Club yard of the
month is awarded to Linda Morgan at
1151 Chamboard Lane. Her lovely
yard has a variety of plants including
hydrangeas, agapanthus (Lily of the
Nile), caladium and yellow alders.
Knockout roses and Yesterday, Today
and Tomorrow bushes frame the yard.
Seasonal decorations provide
additional pops of color to give an
Autumn feel.

We’d like to take a brief moment to recognize the veterans in Shepherd Park Plaza and their service to our country.
