In this big universe fu of many moons,

I have traveled and seen many wonders,

Soft , colorful, and full of intricate patt erns, Lindsey Yankey’s illustrations feel like a personal invitation into the coziest home, and the adoration between Mina and her grandma is evident on every page.

Grandma celebrated me! In her eyes, I did no wrong. She made me feel smart, worthy, and confident. Her love gave me strength that sustains me to this day. I truly wish every human could experience the kind of immense love my grandma had for me, which I now try to pass on to my own children, because I believe children who experience an abundance of love grow up to become resilient, self-assured, and well-adjusted adults.

My loving grandma became an orphan when she was five. Her parents died within a short time of each other, but in those early years of her life she must have been loved and cherished dearly as one of the youngest siblings in her family. In addition to the support of her loving family and nanny, Grandma also had a strong ally in her god. My grandma was a devout Muslim; she adored god and the prophet and read her Koran every day, and she drew strength from her faith. I remember she sometimes cried during her prayers. When I asked why she was crying, she would answer that she was talking to god, who loves us all and is there for us in our time of need.

As for what I believe in, I believe in my grandma’s love and compassion. She showed me to be generous and loving toward all. She taught me that life is short and we need to live it with love. One of her best friends was our Christian neighbor next door. You’ll read more about these two friends in my book.

I hope that there is a heaven and one day I’ll see my grandma there and feel the warmth of her arms wrapping around me again, but even if that never happens, she is always right here in my heart. This book is an ode to my love for her.
