The Recent History of Madison High School Baseball
1935-39Russ Bergman and Johnny Stillwell led a team to Madi-son’s first “Little Five” Championship in 1937. The other four teams in the conference were Millburn, Caldwell, Glen Ridge and Summit. Russ Bergman was consid-ered the best short stop in northern New Jersey and was drafted by the NY Yankees in ’37. He went to Duke Uni-versity and played both basketball and baseball until ‘39. He had outstanding play in AA for the Yanks and AAA for the Yanks and was called-up in September for the Bronx for the final penant push. In the Winter of ‘42 he was drafted and served in WWII for 4 years. He never played pro baseball again.
Johnny Stillwell who also served in WWII was killed in action.
Other members of those teams and long-time Madiso-nians were Jack Livsey, Joe Falco and Benny Pisapio.
1962-651962 – Coach Bruce Derrick was a Pittsburg Pirate scout and new baseball. He had a talented team of second baseban Al (Bubby) Falco who played at Tampa, Bob Mate in left field, a terrific pitcher in Freddie Otten, sophomore shortstop by the name of Rick Armstrong who later played around the world for the Marines, Frosh pitcher Doug Hale who went on to lead the nation in home runs at Colgate up until the waning days of the college season. Peter Jileba a Freshman roamed center field, Carl Caskey held down first, Joey Sabatini a senior was at second and Bennie Vivonna was was a quick shot in right.
Many of the talented Frosh and Sophs played for the Little Leage team of 1959 who finished third in the State coached by Tony Gero, Sr. and Joe Natale. * Interestin historic note that Morris Twp. Students went to MHS that year due to the building of Morristown High.
1963 - The team went 12-3 under Coach Bruce Derrick. It was a young and promising team. Peter Jileba hit .482 as a Sophmore.
1964 - Madison won the State Group II Championship with a 12-4 record.
This team was led by Captain Bobby Mauro, catcher, Doug Hale who threw a No Hitter, Peter Jileba in center and pitcher, Al “Bubby” Falco who locked down 3rd and first baseman Carl Caskey. Mauro was considered one of the two t best catcher in the State. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox. Mauro was All Conference, all County and second team All State. He played football and Baseball for the University of South Carolina attain-ing All ACC in Football
Peter Jileba was a Junior and hit .428 though he was visiting over 20 colleges for football and dozends of Big 10, ACC, and SEC football coaches visited Madison to speak to him. Jileba struck out 12 batters in one game and walked an equal number!
Jim Kick of Miami Dolphin NFL fame, played for Boonton on a very good team. In the 50’s and 60’s the top 16 teams in New Jersey were invited to play in the Greater Newark Tournament (GNT)
Madison lost the third game (semis) to eventual winner Saint Benedicts.
Bobby Mauro threw out four runners in two games to make his mark as the best catcher in New Jersey!Jileba amazed the crowds with his Mantlesque home runs!
1965 With a record of 14-3, Madison was again invited back to the Greater Newark Tournament. They finishes second losing to winner Parsippany.
For Parsippany, a right fielder with a gun-arm was Richie Zisk. Zisk was drafted in the 2nd round and played right field for the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates where he hit #5 behind Hall of Famer Willie Stargell. He spent 13 yrs in MLB.
Madison won County and State Group II crowns.Jileba drafted by the Cubs, went on to play both football for Bear Bryant at Alabama and wrestle there as well.
1968 •State Group II Section II Champions •Conference Champions•County Runners-Up to Morristown•Team led by Captain Steve Natale, Peter Correa, John Bradshaw (became Madison HS A/D), Big Lou Casamassa, Sandy Mantone, Dave Sicalowski and Frank DeSena and Bobby Kimball who would go on to play football as a fullback for Kansas.
1977-78Steve Natale returned to Coach State championship football and coach baseball in 1977-1978. The Dodgers won the Div. II Group II State Championship. Steve may be the only person to have played and coached teams that won State Championships for Madison. The were second in the County Championship.
2011Second year Coach Mickey Ennis leads Madison to its most wins ever. The 20-10 record leads The Dodges to be ranked 6th in the County Group II rankings. Coach Ennis wins County Coach of the Year honors and base-ball is back in Madison!
