Much has been written about the qualities of great business leaders. Of the many attributes necessary, effective communication is critical and can be improved by most business managers. This goes beyond simply telling people what you want them to do. Often, the process is more complex, requiring additional steps and follow up.

Subordinates must trust those who lead them, otherwise messages may not be well received. This takes a commitment beyond just saying what is right; a leader must be willing to act on promises to foster trustworthiness. Leaders must also view conversation as going two ways rather than simply a means of providing instruction. Further, feedback must be received openly and without judgment, otherwise subordinates will feel undervalued. While there are a number of other ways to improve communication, honing these skills will go a long way towards enhancing a team’s production.
