This goes beyond simply telling people what you want them to do. Often, the process is more complex, requiring additional steps and follow up.

Subordinates must trust those who lead them, otherwise messages may not be well received. This takes a commitment beyond just saying what is right; a leader must be willing to act on promises to foster trustworthiness. Leaders must also view conversation as going two ways rather than simply a means of providing instruction. Further, feedback must be received openly and without judgment, otherwise subordinates will feel undervalued.
