Few garment industries
• Increase in population due to rapid urbanization between 1981-1991, 1991-2001 and 2001 onwards.
• Amount of waste generation increased tremendously and characteristic & composition of waste have undergone changes.
• Sanitary landfill site at Sisdol (26 km North West of KMC) were developed in 2006 for disposal of waste.

Generation – Disposal Situation
• Average Waste Generation - 365 Tons/Day:
– Disposal by KMC - 342 Tons/Day (93%)– Remains to be Unmanaged: 23 Tons/Day (7%)

• KMC: 206 Tons/Day (60%)• Private Sector: 136 Tons/Day (40%)
KMC Expenditure:
USD 37.5 million (USD 3.5 / Capita / year)

Components of the study:
1. Bishnumati River Corridor along with Inner City/Historic core (mainly focusing on the urban transport elements) (implementation phase with funding from ADB)
2. The improvement of the Solid Waste Management. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is seeking fund from the potential investors and the international funding agencies to implement the project elements under this component.
Project description:Activities to be funded
KMC is looking for potential private investors and the international funding agencies for the implementation of the following project elements:
Upgrading of existing transfer station and construction of new transfer stations•Tentative Estimated cost: USD 1.5 millions •Duration: 1.5-2 years (tentative)Installation of large scale modern composting plant at the central level•Tentative Estimated cost: USD 11millions including power generation•Duration: 2-3 yearsInstallation of Bio-gas plant, power unit and sanitization activities in the existing landfill site•Tentative Estimated cost: USD 14millions•Duration: 2.5-3.5 years Promotion and implementation of small scale waste water treatment plants along Bishnuma River Corridors•Tentative Estimated cost: USD 1.3 millions•Duration: 1.5-2 years
