Project Scope ‘Inland Waterways’ is economically most viable sector
and, as such it should be an integral part of infrastructure development in India. Though environment-friendly and, frequently, the most economical mode of inland transport, it remains largely under-exploited
Improvement in Inland Waterways 3
India has an extensive network of inland waterways in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters and creeks. Development of inland waterways would be suitable for heavy and bulky goods as well as it will lower the logistics cost of production and in turn, make the prices of the products more competitive in global market Recently Cabinet has approved declaration of 101 Waterways as a National Waterways
National waterway I will receive $50 MN boost and technical support from World Bank
ObjectiveThe objectives of the project are1.To improve navigation of National Waterway I2.To improve inland water ways management through financial reforms3.Proposing new Business Models
Improvement in Inland Waterways 4
IWT Current Scenario
Navigable rivers: 14500 km• Usable by mechanised boats : 3700 km• Actually used: 2000 km
5Improvement in Inland Waterways
Total Canal length: 4300 km• Navigable : 900 km• Actually used: 330 km
There are five National Waterways• NW 1 - declared in 1986• NW 2 - declared in 1988• NW 3 - declared in 1993• NW 4 & 5 - declared in 2008

National Waterway I
7Improvement in Inland Waterways
Importance of National Waterway I
1. Length of NW I : 1620 km2. Ganga is a perennial river3. IWAI has entered into memorandum of understanding with
NTPC for transportation of 3 MMTPA for a period of 10 years through NW I
4. National Waterway I will receive $50 MN boost and technical support from World Bank to build requisite infrastructure and turn it into National Waterways for year long navigation
Improvement in Inland Waterways 8
SWOT AnalysisStrength: 1. Relatively simple and straight forward2. Meets the priority needs from Haldia to Allahabad3. It has wide spread stakeholder and government support
Improvement in Inland Waterways 9
Weakness:1. Popular perception that government is unable to deliver2. Local capacity constraints to manage and operate it3. Maintaining Least Available Depth (LAD)
Opportunity:1. Demonstrates that the corporations can deliver infra projects2. Supports the tourism sector3. Riverfront infra developmentThreat:1. Change in government and transport policies2. Marine eco system disturbances3. Increase in migrants
Navigational Aids1. Provide navigation in order to facilitate safe navigation for
various cargo vessels2. Day navigation marks with bamboos3. For night navigation, we provide solar lights4. Use RIS, DGPS
