• In the 1880s lumbering companies used the forests to get their wood, after they cut the wood they put it in a river and then it went into the sawmill and then into the factories.

• Back then the early people’s houses and homes were made out logs and wood because they didn’t know how to make anything else.

• Some of the lumbering industries grew quicker because they had more trees than we do now.

• The sawmill has many different saws to cut down trees and sculpt them into different things.

• In the old days wheels were made out of wood and lumber and the wagons were too.

• The lumbering people used slippery icy roads to haul the logs across.• When the trees were cut down they were never replaced, so try to protect the

trees!• The animals died with the trees as they were being cut down.• Almost every thing they made back then was made out of wood and lumber.

o The definition of tourism is traveling for pleasure or for your own enjoyment.

A second definition of tourism is an industry when other people provide a service for you.

An example of tourism is going to the Upper Peninsula for hiking, skiing in winter, enjoying the beaches or canoeing. No matter which one you are doing it is all tourism.

Tourism is Michigan’s 2nd largest industry. Places of tourism can be motels, campgrounds, apartment buildings,

even your general store!
