DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP:

Please use the school crossing on Grand Boulevard when crossing the road. It has been noted that there are some families crossing at the roundabout or just up from the school crossing, which poses a great danger. When picking up or dropping off at Newbury Boulevard, please be mindful of the amount of pedestrian and car traffic in this area. Double parking poses a huge risk for students and parking inspectors often visit schools and will issue parking infringements to anyone found posing a danger or parking illegally. SCHOOL ZONE= 40KM: When outside on Yard Support I am quite shocked to realise that some motorists are driving very fast in a School Zone. There have been several occasions where I have had near misses of cars stopping just in time, even though I am wearing a fluorescent high visibility vest. The legal speed limit is 40 km in school areas. Please be mindful of this. The risk of speeding is just too great. BIKES AND SCOOTERS: At Newbury Primary School, we promote health and fitness and it is terrific to see many students riding their bikes or scooters to school. The second bike shed is now available for use. Please make sure your child is wearing a helmet and that once they enter the school grounds, they walk their bike or scooter in. NAPLAN: This week, Year 3 and 5 students havel participated in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy as part of the National Assessment Program which is a Federal Government initiative. Students are assessed in Language Conventions, Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Results will be made available to parents later in the year. EVERY DAY COUNTS-EARLY LEAVERS: Fact: Last year students left school early a total number of 197 times which interrupts their school day. We continue to have a number of students leaving school early and doing so on a regular basis. Please be aware that not only does leaving school early impact on your child’s learning time, it also distracts the class when students leave during a lesson. Please ensure that your child is at school for the whole day and make any appointments out of school times. A reminder that our dismissal time is 3:10pm. MOBILE PHONES: Please note that mobile phones are not permitted at school unless permission has been granted by the Principal. A Request to have a mobile phone at school form needs to be filled out and handed into the office for approval. This form can be collected from the office. EVERY DAY COUNTS-FAMILY HOLIDAYS: Last year 2260 days of absences were due to family holidays! This greatly impacts on student learning. Whilst we understand that sometimes families need to go overseas due to family circumstances we ask you to take holidays out of school times. Students get eleven weeks of holidays a year and having additional time can impact on their social and academic learning needs. All family holidays need Principal approval. Please contact the Principal via the school email [email protected],.gov.au SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL: Please note that supervision for students before school commences at 8:45am and after school until 3:25pm. Staff are not on duty beyond these times. Please do not drop off your child before this time or leave them waiting after school beyond this time as they will not be supervised. Families will be contacted if this occurs. ALL DAY GRAZING: At Newbury Primary School, we understand that students need food to fuel their brain and that they are hungry during the day. It is great to visit classrooms and see students nibbling on carrot sticks, cheese, rice crackers, fresh or dried fruit, yoghurt or vegetables. We encourage students to bring along healthy snacks that they can munch on in class so ensure you pack some into their lunchboxes. Please refrain from providing food that may affect any anaphylactic students. Thank you for choosing Newbury Primary School for your child’s education and trusting us with your most precious possession. We look forward to continuing to work together in partnership to provide the best learning environment for your child. Principal Class Learning Community Michelle Bromfield Michelle Tedeschi

In Term 2, the Year 2 Learning Community have continued to focus on the School Wide Positive Behaviour Matrix. Classroom

communities have been celebrating examples of students successfully demonstrating the Behaviour Expectations and our

school values. In QUEST, students have been asking questions and developing their understandings about how habitats meet

the needs of different animals. Students are also exploring how changes in weather impact animals and their habitats. As part

of this QUEST unit, we will soon be visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo!

In English, students have been learning about persuasive texts. Classroom communities have been exploring many different

varieties of persuasive texts, such as advertisements, posters, letters and newspaper articles. Students have been identifying

features of persuasive texts. For example, facts and opinions, reasons and examples, emotive language and modality words,

introduction and conclusion. Students are now applying these understandings as they begin to write their own persuasive

texts. Students have also been learning about making inferences, that is using clues from the text and background knowledge

to figure out what the text is saying. Students can practise these skills when they are reading at home for 20 minutes every

night.

In Maths, we have been learning about addition. Students have identified the vocabulary used in addition problems and are

learning a range of mental strategies such as counting on, doubles, near doubles and make to 10. Using Sumdog at home is a

great way to apply these skills outside the classroom. We have also been using informal units (eg. unifix, hand spans or

paperclips) to measure items in the classroom. Students are learning how to measure correctly and identify the longest/

shortest objects.

We are excited to see our students being so engaged in their learning across the curriculum.

School wide positive behaviours

This term, the year 5/6 students have been learning all about the Newbury Behaviour Expectations Matrix. We have been pulling it apart and identifying what the matrix means to us in our classroom, outside and in our community. We have taken photos to model each of the expected behaviours at Newbury. During assembly, we have presented to the community via video; how the matrix is used at Newbury and how we model these behaviours. It has been great being leaders and modelling to the school our expectations and we can’t wait to share more of the expectations with you next term! Below is a copy of our revised behaviour expectations matrix for 2019.

This term Newbury Primary School is helping kids living with cancer and their families by fundraising for Camp Quality.

Camp Quality is a charity that helps thousands of kids every year by operating a range of programs including kid’s camps, family camps, primary

school puppet programs, fun therapy, respite care and financial support.

Camp Quality programs are designed to bring happiness and laughter to the lives of children living with cancer.

Here at Newbury Primary School we take the safety of our students seriously. Please refer to the VicRoads

information below and discuss with your children the importance of road safety.

Crossing the road safely Pedestrians have to share the road with vehicles so it is important they take care when crossing the road. As a pedestrian, plan where you will walk and always choose the safest place to cross a road. Stop, Look, Listen, Think Follow the safe road crossing procedure – STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK.

STOP one step back from the kerb or shoulder of the road if there is no footpath.

LOOK in all directions for approaching traffic.

LISTEN in all directions for approaching traffic.

THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road – when the road is clear or all traffic has stopped.

When crossing, walk straight across the road. Keep LOOKING and LISTENING for traffic while crossing. This information is particularly relevant to young people learning to cross roads. But it also provides a useful reminder to everyone particularly to those who may be distracted when crossing the road. Crossings Even at crossings you still need to remain alert and check whether vehicles are stopping for you. Always make sure traffic has actually stopped before stepping onto the road. Remember children’s crossings are legally active only when the flags are displayed. If a school crossing supervisor is on duty, cross only when he or she indicates that it is safe. Crossing the road at other places Walk straight across the road – don’t jay-walk.

Keep checking in both directions to make sure the way is clear.

Try not to cross the road from between parked cars or near trees and bushes as drivers may not see you.

Avoid crossing near a bend or crest in the road. Give yourself a good chance to see vehicles coming from both directions.

Avoid crossing on roundabouts, particularly multi-lane roundabouts as they are very busy and complex and cars are not required to give way to you, unless there is a pedestrian crossing. Find somewhere further away from the roundabout to safely cross the road.
