15th November 2018 Term 4, Issue 17

Facilities Update

School Hall - Unfortunately progress with this project has slowed as the construction company have had some staffing issues. However, they are now on track to have the works completed by the end of this month.

New Year 3 and 4 Adventure Playground - It is wonderful for our school to be in a position where we have sufficient funds to purchase contemporary and challenging play equipment for the children to enjoy, as is the case with the new Year 3 and 4 adventure playground. This new facility includes a larger sandpit, a vast array of climbing apparatus and a trampet. Unfortunately, the trades people were only able to install half of the new playground as the climbing structure (sphere) is yet to arrive, I am led to believe it is in transit from Germany. They are hoping to be back before the end of the month to complete the project.

Included are some photographs of the children enjoying our new facility.

Congratulations to the following students for their amazing achievements: Gymnastics - Sayuni (Year 5) recently competed in the State Gymnastics championships and her team finished in 1st place, which is an amazing achievement! Sayuni’s results were as follows:

1st Overall

1st in Beam and Vault

2nd Floor and

3rd Bars At a recent assembly Sayuni mentioned that she practices (trains) for approximately 15 hours per week in order to be ready for the various tournaments she has the privilege of partaking in. This clearly demonstrates the persistence, dedication and passion required to be a State Champion – well done and congratulations Sayuni as I and the entire school community are very, very proud of you!

Suron Ke Jadugar (Magicians of Rhythm) Club – Congratulations to the Chopra family (Simran, Year 5, Saloni, Year 3 and Sahana, Prep) and Mihika (Year 3) for their amazing efforts with the Suron Ke Jadugar (Magicians of Rhythm) Club as they work tirelessly to uphold the Indian Traditions of playing traditional Indian songs and Bollywood dancing. Well done girls as it is wonderful to see you undertake this!

Swimming – Congratulations to Tharusha (Year 5) who is an avid swimmer. Tharusha recently competed in the State Swimming Finals and finished 21st in the 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1.49 minutes which is 5 seconds faster than his previous personal best. Well done and congratulations Tharusha as this is fantastic achievement!

TEACHING CHILDREN TO ASK FOR WHAT THEY WANT

As the year rapidly draws to an end, and holidays loom, often a tirade of requests from our younger family members can occur. Michael Grose a parenting educator suggests that this time could be used to help children accurately express their needs and build understanding of reasons why every request cannot be satisfied. I hope you find his suggestions helpful in developing dialogue that is clear and with consideration of others. An important independence skill for children to learn is the ability to articulate their needs and wishes clearly, respectfully and appropriately. Here’s how you can help: An important task for parents is to give kids the skills they need for independence, so they are not reliant on you to resolve their problems. An important independence skill for kids to learn is the ability to articulate their needs and wishes clearly, respectfully and appropriately. Coach them about time and place Effective communication is as much about time and place as it is about the choice of words. It doesn’t matter what words are chosen, but a child’s request for a particular thing, just as you are dashing out the door in the morning is the wrong time to ask a question. It deserves to be met with, “Would you like to ask that question at a more appropriate time?” Help them not to take no personally Children, just like adults, with low confidence levels take rejection personally, while those with high confidence levels don’t take rejection to heart. Discuss with kids that others, including siblings have a right to say no to a request and that a no may occur for many reasons, none of which need reflect poorly on them. No means No Children have a right to ask others for what they want but that doesn’t mean they keep asking if they meet a refusal. A child’s request for an ice cream just before mealtime that’s met with a refusal should be taken at face value. If a child keeps asking or asks another person, then it’s appropriate to let your child know strongly of your disapproval.

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity

for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter demonstrates the amazing writing skills of the following students and their connectedness to Halloween:

Sethumi (Year 2) was developing her ability to commence her narrative writing with a “sizzling start” in order to capture the reader’s attention and “hook them into” the story:

The day when Melanie meets a Zombie

Bang! Crackle… the lightning at midnight. It is Halloween and fifty-eight parents are looking at the dark and gloomy graveyard, staring and praying for the dead. Suddenly, Cas Ronilia rises out of her grave and mutters “If you don’t give me prayers you won’t get any either!” All of the shocked parents start running away screaming like a devil at the police…..”There’s a spooky zombie and it talks!”

Lavendra (Year 2) has been learning how to keep the reader in suspense ….

The Haunted House I couldn’t believe my eyes, the clouds were dark and red and I was walking in a forest ………… wait, what’s over there? It looks like a haunted house! It was covered in cobwebs, I opened the door ….very slowly, walked in and then I heard a howl. I looked, it was a wolf and it was staring straight at me. Then it started to run away ….. whoosh, like a cheetah it was gone! Nishi (Year 2) has been learning how to use onomatopoeia to engage the reader….

The Forest of the Haunted House “Why does it smell like dead bodies everywhere?” I said to myself, “Oh, I get it …3,2,1….ahhhh! I screamed to myself because I saw a haunted house! I was supposed to go to my friend’s house for a birthday party but now I am face-to-face with a haunted house…. How did that happen? Wait, where am I? This is the creepy part, I am in a forest. My heart was racing! Suddenly the door opened, creeeeeek went the door, I walked in and within the first 3 steps I saw something really fast glide across the house. Crash, something fell down ……………

Aditi (Year 3) has been learning about the importance of choosing the best vocabulary at the right time and also visualising what you are writing so you can communicate your vision to the reader.

The Spookiest Halloween Ever! ‘Clap, boom shake’, for the past half hour, that’s all Ethan could hear, those were the sounds of a stormy night which, Ethan was sure, was keeping the rest of the London tour awake. In fact, it wasn’t the storm keeping Ethan awake, it was the anticipation for tomorrow. The one day of the year he loved the most, he probably loved this day more than his love for chewable, lewable bubble gum lollipops. This day of course, was Halloween! In fact it was the trick or treating that made this his favourite day, year after year. The one day of the year that his parents let him devour as many lollies, chocolates, snakes and, well anything he could get his hands on. It was all about the rush he felt when the sugar hit his tongue. The rush was all that he thought of while he was ringing thousands of doorbells.
