32019 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT

For 31 years, Helping Paws has taken great pride in the independence and support that our service dogs provide to individuals with disabilities. We are also very proud of our five-year-old veteran and first responder program that provides service dogs to individuals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), helping to reduce their stress and improve their well-being. The success stories and accomplishments of our graduates make us recommit day after day to our mission of furthering people’s independence and quality of life through the use of Assistance Dogs.

For the fiscal year, we placed 14 service dogs – 11 of which were service dogs placed with

individuals with disabilities or with veterans. As the organization has continued to grow, we have sought additional ways to serve other communities and ultimately expand our reach. I’m proud to report that this year, we placed service dogs in new roles, including:

1. Facility dog. We placed a dog with a licensed psychologist who works with victims of trauma.

2. First Responder dog. We grew our PTSD program with the placement of a dog with a retired first responder.

3. Facility “courthouse” dog. Our first facility “courthouse” dog was placed with the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office to provide quiet companionship and stress relief to adults and children who are victims and witnesses to crime.

This expansion helps us to “increase connections” and serve more people in new ways. I am humbled by the commitment of our staff, foster home trainers and volunteers who help us meet the needs of more and more members of our community. And I am grateful to the individuals and sponsors who generously support the organization financially. Each of your unique and valuable contributions makes everything we do possible, and your impact reaches far beyond the organization itself. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you all for everything you do.

– Ryan Evers

Jennifer Zerwas & GordyI have had the honor of serving my country in two ways. First, for six years I was a peace-time veteran with the U.S. Air Force, serving as a security police officer and law enforcement specialist in Okinawa, Japan and Ramstein, Germany. Second, as a police officer for more than 13 years. In January of 2015, I was diagnosed with PTSD, a result of years of working in life-threatening circumstances and handling critical incidents. Ultimately, I retired for medical reasons in December of 2015.

My retirement was devastating. I was lost and very depressed. As a third-generation officer, with three siblings who are officers, I felt like a complete failure. To compound those issues, I didn’t feel safe in public and rarely left home. Even at home, I kept a weapon very close. I was miserable. After time, I started to accept misery as my new normal.

A friend, also a veteran graduate of Helping Paws, encouraged me to apply for a service dog. Doing so has changed my life in amazing ways. I was paired with Gordy pretty quickly as we had an instant bond. Gordy helps me in so many ways! He is always by my side, always making me smile. He helps me with anxiety and depression, and I am sleeping through the night for the first time in years. We even ventured to the State Fair this past summer, a place I have not been in a very long time. Every day Gordy reminds me that there is good in the world.

I am so grateful for the Helping Paws organization, and for Gordy’s foster home trainer, Mary. Their dedication to veterans and first responders alike are second to none.

GORDY HELPS ME IN SO MANY WAYS!

AN INSTANT BOND

Trevor McMartin & Fulton Eighteen years ago, the events of September 11, 2001 unfolded. I felt despondent watching it happen right before my eyes, and so, four years later on September 11, 2005, I enlisted in the United States Air Force Security Forces. Exactly one year later, on September 11, 2006, I stepped off a helicopter into Iraq for the first time, and into what would become my story for the next four years. My last year-long deployment was in 2008; we were boots on the ground again that September, embedded with the army in the “Triangle of Death.” During that campaign, I lost a number of friends and brothers-in-arms. Finally, after 845 days in Iraq over 3-and-a-half years, I returned to the U.S. on September 7, 2009. The very next day, my flight commander lost his life in multiple IED attacks on a convoy to the airfield that would have brought him back home. A few weeks later, I separated from the military with very little transition back into civilian life.

At this point, I was a very angry at people and the world. I was in a dark place; I isolated myself from my family and friends and everything I once was. I would only befriend fellow veterans that were just like me. Trying to find help years later without going to the VA was very discouraging and a fruitless endeavor. I finally checked my pride at the door and admitted to myself that I had a very challenging problem. I was diagnosed with severe PTSD in July of 2016. This led to countless months of trying to find help.

In addition to the “skills and pills” route, we started to look at service dog programs, researching different providers nationwide, and via a Google search, I found Helping Paws. From the start of the application process to where we are now at graduation, it has been wonderful. My service dog Fulton has given me back the life that I had been searching for the last 8 years. Where once I would just stay home, today I am going everywhere with my family, with Fulton at my side. The feeling of despondency is finally waning. In Iraq, I had a unit of 110 people. We lost a few in combat, but we have lost even more members at home from suicide—the result of lingering, untreated PTSD. Thanks to Fulton and Helping Paws, I will not be one of the 22 veterans a day that takes their life, today.

I GOT MY LIFE BACK

THE FEELING OF DESPONDENCY IS FINALLY WANING.

Greg Tillman & Freya From 1966-1968, I served two tours of duty in the United States Navy. I was one of 12 Navy personnel assigned to an amphibious unit working with the 3rd Marine Amtrak Division, 4 miles south of the DMZ line in Vietnam.

We were asked to do some of the most horrendous and gruesome acts toward the men, women and children who lived in these villages of South Vietnam. After a while, it became a routine practice because it was wartime. We were told by our commanding officers that it was the right thing to do because it was either them or us.

I left Vietnam a broken and confused individual. I did not feel like I fit into this society that didn’t accept me. I had nightmares and flashbacks from my time in Vietnam. I was diagnosed with PTSD and tried every program the VA offered to help me control my rage and anger, but to no avail. I felt physically and emotionally defeated and was placed on medication to control my depression and anxiety. It has been 50 years of VA programs and medications that have not worked—until I heard about Helping Paws.

I applied to the organization and after being matched with Freya, I knew I was on the right path to freedom from my rage and anger. Freya has been with me all the way. She is a great companion and lays by my side wherever I am in the house. Her unconditional love gives me comfort and strength. Freya accompanies me to all my medical appointments and is now a big part of my life. My quality of life continues to improve. I would like to sincerely thank the Helping Paws organization for Freya and their dedication to our nation’s veterans.

COMFORT & STRENGTH

MY QUALITY OF LIFE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE.

Ethan Meyer & HobieSince my accident in 2010, I have struggled with independence. Now, with Hobie, I have a chance to get that part of my life back. Even though we’ve only been with each other for a short while, Hobie has really opened up my life. He makes me feel so loved and his ability to snuggle is second to none! Hobie is a gorgeous dog with an inexplicably calming presence. With him, my house has become a home again and I feel like this is the start of something wonderful. I can’t even begin to articulate the gratitude I feel for being so blessed to have him in my life. The support he gives me reflects the impeccable people that helped make him the stellar worker he is today. Through Helping Paws, I have become connected to a whole new group of people who I am proud to know.

Going forward I know that I am not alone as Hobie will be at my side. I also know that the dedicated volunteers and donors at Helping Paws are there to further the great cause of giving me, and people in similar situations, their independence back. Since the accident there have been many trials to endure; even the simplest things became nearly impossible. Every day was challenging and I gave up on doing many things that I would have liked to because it just seemed too difficult. Now I see a future where I can be independent: with Hobie by my side, I know that every trial will be met with his wagging tail and helping paws.

I SEE A FUTURE WHERE I CAN BE INDEPENDENT.

A CALMING PRESENCE

Tom Hallada & Juneau In the beginning of May, I had the pleasure of being teamed up with service dog Juneau. He is a Golden Retriever full of life and very happy to please. I cannot imagine life without him after being together for only three months.

There are three areas in which having a service dog has greatly impacted my life. First, the mobility aspect: Juneau has been very helpful in picking things up for me, turning on lights, and assisting with entering and exiting.

The second is the companionship aspect, which has had a bigger impact than the mobility piece. Juneau has made me smile and laugh so many times. There is also something about having a dog at your side that has a calming effect. Shifting the focus from myself to Juneau and making sure his needs are met has been very fulfilling for me.

Finally, having a service dog next to you causes people to treat you differently. Before Juneau most people would simply notice my wheelchair. Now people smile at Juneau and I and come up and talk.

I CANNOT IMAGINE BEING WITHOUT HIM.

FULL OF LIFE

Corbett Laubignat & Jerry Jerry is such a priceless gift. He is always eager to pick up items that I may have dropped or need to access and he loves assisting me with taking off my jacket every morning at work.

Jerry also does something that I know Helping Paws does not specifically train their dogs to do, yet they do it so well—he bridges the social divide between people who experience disability and people who have yet to experience disability, allowing for authentic interactions and meaningful relationship-building opportunities. It’s amazing when I shift from being the person in the chair to the person with the dog. In fact, it’s priceless!

A PRICELESS GIFT

HE BRIDGES THE SOCIAL DIVIDE BETWEEN PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCE DISABILITY.

Molly DePrekel & Finnegan Finnegan works as a facility dog with Molly DePrekel, Clinical Director of Cairns Psychological Services located at the Midwest Center for Trauma and Emotional Healing in Minnetonka.

Finnegan is involved with individual therapy sessions and works to comfort people with various mental health issues. He sometimes sits by clients and asks to be petted and other times he may go for a walk or do some fetching with a client who needs to move and play for their own self-regulation.

Finnegan often stops to say hi to clients in the waiting room or hallway who just want a meet-and-greet on their way into or out of a therapy session. He seems to sense who needs a Finnegan hug or paw shake and will approach that person and wait for a greeting.

He offers our clients some good Golden Retriever love and smiles. The clinic often works with those who are recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma, and having Finnegan there as a therapy partner is fantastic.

We look forward to his continued work with individuals, as well as to group therapy in the future as he gains experience in this setting.

Bill Kubes & Norie Recently, the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office embarked on a new adventure—that of bringing on a facility/assistance dog. At the end of May, our division welcomed Norie, a Golden Retriever facility dog from Helping Paws.

Norie assists our division by working with victims and witnesses in the court system. She is a gentle dog that has an amazing calming effect, and her impact on individual victims has been positive and profound. It’s an incredible feeling to watch people’s reactions to Norie—they always have a happy expression on their face as they meet her.

Each day, our bond grows stronger, and the trust between us strengthens as well. She is a very special and intelligent dog, and I know that she will be a very valuable long-term asset to our County and the people we serve.

Norie has helped many victims, young and older. Recently, she sat in a meeting with a victim who would reach down and pet her while she was talking. After the meeting was done this individual asked if Norie could be at future meetings, saying “Norie helped me so much today.” She had a big smile and gave Norie a hug before she left.

This is such a valuable opportunity and experience for me, for our office and for those we are assisting in our work. I am so lucky to be able to have this position and to be Norie’s handler at Ramsey County.

HER IMPACT ON INDIVIDUAL VICTIMS HAS BEEN POSITIVE AND PROFOUND.

A VALUABLE ASSET
