“A TEAM EFFORT”

The word “crisis” means different things to different people. Over the past year, the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay responded to over 160,000 requests for help. These requests came from people of all income, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

Each one of the individuals who turned to the Crisis Center for help did so because they were experiencing a personal crisis. Some were battling thoughts of suicide, others needed to stabilize their finances, and still others had experienced sexual assault or domestic abuse.

It takes a team of over 300 staff and volunteers to answer these calls for help. This team is comprised of 2-1-1 Specialists, Trauma Counselors, TransCare EMT’s, Family Stabilization Case Managers, Sexual Assault Victim Advocates, and many more, allowing the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay to provide specialized care to people in their most desperate hour.

Even with all this expertise under one roof, we realize we can’t be all things to all people in crisis. This is why we maintain a database of over 4,600 resources that in-clude non-profit organizations, businesses and government agencies that provide help and information to people. Anyone who calls 2-1-1 can speak to a Specialist who can connect them with organizations that can provide a solution to their crisis.

The Crisis Center has assembled team of crisis and trauma professionals so we can be an extraordinary place where people find help, hope and healing to make tomorrow better. However, these hard-working staff members and volunteers couldn’t do their work without additional team members; the donors, corporate partners, and government leaders who support the work of the Crisis Center. Your commitment to this organization helps ensure that no one in our community has to face crisis alone. Corbett Trauma Center provides counseling services and support for individuals, children, youth, elders and their families who have experienced assault, sexual abuse or other traumatic events. Licensed doctoral and master’s level staff are committed to giving clients caring, comprehensive and competent assistance.

THE DIFFERENCE YOUR SUPPORT MAKES …

When 12 year-old Susan first arrived at Corbett Trauma Center, the effects of the sexual abuse that she had been enduring for months by her uncle were clearly visible. At school, she became withdrawn from her friends and peers, and her grades dropped as she had more and more trouble focusing.

Over the course of the next twelve weeks, Susan slowly began to open up about her abuse. She and her therapist discussed what had happened to her and how she was not in any way responsible for the abuse. She learned how to differentiate between good touches and bad touches, how to say no when put in an uncomfortable situation, and how to calm herself if she was feeling anxious or angry.

Susan’s healing journey at Corbett Trauma Center was one of transformation. No longer in pain and withdrawn from others, she was filled with happiness and had a renewed thirst for life. Her therapists explained her transformation as “a night and day difference”. She became more outgoing and began to thrive once again. Susan’s story of success is just one of many due to the specialized counseling and care provided at Corbett Trauma Center.

Certified Crisis Specialists provide confidential crisis intervention and information referrals to over 4,600 human services in Hillsborough County. Specialists are on hand 24/7/365 to talk with people about depression, suicidal thoughts, financial problems, teenage struggles and parenting issues.

The department also provides a number of specialized services including a peer-to-peer support line for veterans at 1-844-MyFLVet; child development screenings through 813-425-GROW; and outgoing calls to socially isolated seniors through the Telephone Reassurance program.

THE DIFFERENCE YOUR SUPPORT MAKES …

Late one night, Ashley, a 2-1-1 intervention specialist, received a call from Will. He was 20 years old, attending classes at Hillsborough Community College, and had a steady job in a call center where he sold advertising, but he was battling depression. Will said he felt like he was a failure and suffered from anxiety and worry. He spoke of having no hope and said it would be “better for everyone if I wasn’t here anymore”.

Ashley spent the next 35 minutes assessing the situation by listening to Will and asking probing questions. That night she was able to get Will to a place where he was safe both physically and emotionally. She then arranged to have Daniella, a Suicide Prevention Care Coordinator at the Crisis Center, follow up with Will and develop a safety plan.

Today Will is receiving treatment for his depression. He feels better about his job, school, and what the future holds. He has a new direction in life that all started when a compassionate specialist at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay took the time to listen and help Will find the support he needed.

Family Stabilization includes a variety of services designed to meet basic needs, prevent homelessness, enhance self-sufficiency, and stabilize acute financial and emotional crises of families and individuals in Hillsborough County. These financial services are designed to assess household needs, develop strategies, and help clients learn to meet their own needs.

THE DIFFERENCE YOUR SUPPORT MAKES …

Melissa came to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay with her young son in tow. She was nearly due to deliver her second child and had separated from her husband. She turned to the Crisis Center for help to break free of abuse, neglect and debt.

The Crisis Center’s Family Stabilization program worked with Melissa to develop a plan to restore her credit, build savings toward buying a home, and pay-off debts. Melissa completed the program’s financial literacy class, Money Matters, and received guidance while working with creditors to negotiate new payments and reduce balances. She was able to open a “second chance” checking account and a new savings account.

Melissa and her boys are safe now. She is returning to work, the baby is in daycare and her 4-year-old is in Head Start. She has started to save some of her income and is exploring ways that she can return to school to complete her Bachelor’s degree.

For rape and sexual assault victims in Hillsborough County, the Crisis Center’s Sexual Assault Services (SAS) is the safe and empowering alternative to a hospital emergency room - where rape is not the highest priority. Survivors are treated with dignity, respect and empathy by a specially trained nurse and staff or volunteer advocate. SAS helps survivors throughout the entire healing process, beginning immediately after the assault and ongoing for as long as necessary.

After receiving a forensic exam at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, the survivor has access to advocacy services. The advocate works with the survivor to empower them by connecting them to any resource they need, including victim’s compensation, counseling, assistance navigating the legal system, or relocation services.

THE DIFFERENCE YOUR SUPPORT MAKES …

Stephanie survived a brutal attack and abduction which resulted in a 10 day stay in the intensive care unit at Tampa General Hospital. The assault left her with chronic pain and severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

There were times where she felt defeated and didn’t want to move forward with the criminal investigation. By working closely with SAS advocates, she found her inner strength and voice and was able to sit on the stand and address the court, giving details of the heinous crime while her assailant sat across from her in the court room.

With her advocate’s encouragement, Stephanie was able to sit through the trial that lasted two very long days. Her rapist was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Today, Stephanie is starting a new chapter in her journey of healing, a chapter focused on her future, not the terrible trauma that happened to her.

Training and Outreach (TAO) provides education and outreach to the community and within the Crisis Center. One primary focus is employee training, coaching, and performance enhancement around core competencies related to trauma informed care. TAO also participatesin numerous community events through the year and manages programs that include:

- Empowerment services for sexual assault survivors that include workshops, speaking opportunities, and special events like Take Back the Night.

- Suicide prevention community training for organizations, churches, businesses and civic groups.

- Violence prevention education for youth that includes workshops related to healthy relationships and bullying prevention.

Brittany came to the Crisis Center’s Empowerment program after realizing that she had not healed from the sexual abuse she experienced as a child. She hadattended other support groups, but found they tended to be a “negative environment” where people focused on struggles and bad feelings.

The empowerment program connected Brittany with a survivor community based on positive feelings and experiences. She’s built relationships and friendships with fellow survivors in a mutually supportive environment.

The program also provides an opportunity to learn about creative expression including poetry, art and music. Brittany has fun participating in the activities and has made good friends who provide encouragement in the healing process.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay operates TransCare Medical Transportation Services which helps support the agency’s programs and services. TransCare is the only CAAS-accredited organization of its kind in Hillsborough County.

TransCare provides primary 9-1-1 Basic Life Support (BLS) services in the city of Tampa, secondary BLS services in Hillsborough County, non-emergency medical transportation between medical facilities, county-wide psychiatric transports to and from all area hospitals, transportation to state psychiatric facilities, stretcher service, and stand-by service for special events.

THE TRANSCARE DIFFERENCE …

TransCare responded to a call from the outpatient unit at Northside Mental Health Center. A nine-year-old boy was aggressive toward his mother and was attempting to run from the premises. The child struggled while his mother attempted to keep him under control so he could be transported under the Baker Act to the children’s crisis stabilization unit.

The TransCare team remained calm, patient & respectful to the child and his mother. The child required restraints in order to protect himself and others around him. The team members calmly redirected and reassured the child and were able to safely transport him to the in-patient facility.

TRANSCARE MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

SERVICES

The staff at Northside was so impressed by professionalism and skill displayed by the TransCare staff through the entire situation, they sent a letter of commendation that stated:

“The TransCare Unit #30 team was highly professional and skilled during the child’s raging behavior, which sustained in intensity for a relatively long period of time. The outpatient department staff is appreciative for Unit #30’s service, assistance, and professionalism throughout the crisis, one of the most escalated the outpatient department has seen in decades.”

Women in Action is a philanthropic group of extraordinary, passionate women who have come together in support of the mission of the Crisis Center.

Each year, during four educational luncheons, Women in Action members learn about tough issues facing our community. Topics discussed in 2014 were new best practices for child welfare; human trafficking: the survivor’s journey; and the effects of domestic violence on children.

Gifts made by members of Women in Action support Crisis Center services and special projects. At the final meeting of the year, Women in Action members take a vote to decide where their investment will be directed based on presentations at the three previous meetings.

A $1,000 annual commitment is made by each Women in Action member. Combined, the Women in Action group make an extraordinary impact. Women in Action 2014 funding included foster care outreach to address human trafficking; outreach to adult sexual assault survivors; and funding for trauma counseling for low income individuals.

The Legacy Society is a philanthropic group of people that have included the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay in their estate plans. These special gifts will help the Crisis Center be there when members of the next generation face crisis in their lives.

There are multiple options available to people of all income levels. The two most popular are:

-Including a gift in a will or living trust. By putting aside a percentage of the assets in a will or trust—from 1 to 100 percent—donors leave a legacy while making sure their family has the security they may need in the future.

-Naming the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay as partial beneficiary of retirement plan assets or life insurance. By dividing up assets in percentages, donors benefit loved ones and the Crisis Center. To make this type of gift, they simply contact the administrator of the retirement account or insurance company for a change-of-beneficiary form.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay has a long history of adhering to high standards of accountability and transparency. Our financial statements are audited annually and are available upon request. We also file the IRS Form 990 annually which is posted on our website.

The Crisis Center’s management is committed to maintaining accurate and reliable financial records, in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States. We follow the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant’s Audit and Accounting Guide for Not-For-Profit Organizations to ensure that our financial statements conform to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. The Center is also in compliance with the requirements described in the U.S. Office of Management and Budget Circular A-133 on our federally funded programs.

The independent CPA firm of Warren Averett conducts an annual audit of the Crisis Center. In fiscal year 2013-2014, our auditors reported that the agency’s financial statements were fairly and accurately presented. The annual audit is reviewed by the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay’s audit committee and approved by the board of directors.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay’s system of checks and balances ensures that it operates in a sound fiscal manner. The organization’s operating budget is approved and reviewed by the finance and executive committee, as well as the board of directors.
