Impact Report 2011-2012 2

This document reviews the work in 2011-12 of North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) and also explains what we do and how we do it.

This year has seen NYS build upon its role as the programme delivery organisation of choice for Sport England and other key partners in the drive to increase participation in sport and physical activity.

We have worked very closely with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of Sport to support them in delivering their Whole Sport Plans and national strategies at a local level throughout North Yorkshire.

We live in tough economic times and sport has not been immune to the challenges of reductions in both public sector funding and the discretionary funding people have to spend on leisure activities. However it has also

been a year of massive anticipation as we draw closer to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and NYS has been at the heart of programmes and activities designed to provide a lasting legacy from the Games.

We delivered the School Games that involved 1200 young people, many competing at county level for the first time in their lives. The Games were one of nine very successful pilots which have now led to the national roll out of the programme this year.

In addition, we launched both Sportivate and Sportmakers.

Sportivate provides six weeks of coaching and strong exit routes for 14 to 25 year olds wanting to take up sport and Sportmakers uses the inspiration of the games to engage a new adult volunteer workforce for

sport. We have also continued to support the training of quality coaches throughout the county to support all our programmes, particularly those who are inspired to take up sport as a result of the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

In 2012 – 13 we will continue with these programmes and expand our legacy work to include the Community Games as well as developing and delivering additional programmes and opportunities.

London 2012 is almost upon us and our collective challenge this year will be to ensure that the inspiration and excitement they produce is matched by a strong, vibrant club and community sport network across North Yorkshire.

Impact Report 2011-2012 4

SportivateSportivate is a new programme which offers funding for the delivery of six-eight week tasters in sports activity aimed to engage and re-engage non-participants in the 14-25 year old age group. For the 2011/12 year North Yorkshire Sport (NYS)had a target of 907 retained participants and achieved 450.

The shortfall in retained participants and the associated funding have been carried over in to 2012/13 and plans are in place to ensure that sportivate targets are met in the coming year.

One of the sessions that received support from NYS was a beginners golf programme for employees primarily in the 20-25 age group who were engaged by targeting their place of work. 17 participants were retained over four separate blocks of activity and were offered a subsidy towards a membership at the golf club nearest to them, which they then took to join that local club.

School GamesNYS was selected as the Yorkshire and Humber pilot for the new School Games programme, and in doing so established a strategic Local Organising Committee (LOC) and a more operational Management Group to deliver the pilot. Building on the annual Youth Games events which had run in previous years the School Games Pilot consisted of 1200 participants in County finals over 23 competitions in 12 different sports. The School Games events enlisted the support of over 100 young leaders to help deliver the event and were supported by GB swimmer, Chris Cook, and a visit from the Olympic Mascots.

As well as some of the more traditional sports such as football and cricket, the School Games is helping to develop other sports, with Modern Pentathlon and Volleyball both featuring in the School Games pilot, and establishing these sports as part of the competition calendar within schools.

Family Intervention Project (FIP)In partnership with North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) Young People’s service, NYS are sourcing best value sports and physical activity sessions to children and young people across North Yorkshire. In this particular project the young people are either in care or in need of an incentive to engage them back to education or employment. The sessions are well received and the young people who have completed some of these sessions have had really positive experiences as a result of taking up a new sport. NYS has managed to source 30 climbing sessions at Harrogate Climbing Centre and 12 months subsidised gym passes across private and Local Authority facilities. We have also sourced holiday programme activities which have included Swimming, Dance, Football, Cycling, Drama and Cricket sessions. We have also funded two mountain bike leaders to be trained and are part of the Children’s centre staff team that are now delivering mountain bike sessions across North Yorkshire.

Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association Working with the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association and local partners in York and Scarborough NYS supported the establishment of a wheelchair basketball section of a mainstream club in York and in Scarborough helped the mainstream basketball and rugby league clubs join together to form an umbrella constituted wheelchair sport club.

Case study Mountain Biking at Dalby Forest Phil and Billy who are outreach

workers for North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) work with numerous young people with problems or issues in their personal lives which unfortunately mean they have been driven to temporarily living in care or seeking support to get back to employment or education. Phil and Billy met with North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) to explore the opportunities around mountain biking leader’s courses and if they could potentially use the NYS network to use existing bikes and promote cycling to the young people they were working with. NYS sourced the mountain bikes that the two outreach workers used in a number of sessions that were completed at Dalby Forest. 25 young people in total took part in these sessions and the feedback received was really positive

Support to National Governing Bodies (England Athletics)NYS and the North Yorkshire Athletics Network (NYAN) have developed and enhanced their partnership over the last 14 months dramatically with the Building Capacity Officer (BCO) providing direct support to the athletics coordinator in many ways such as being a representative on the network’s sub groups and management steering group. The BCO contributes to major decisions and offers guidance for projects and interventions. The coach development support from NYS provided the NYAN with a great opportunity to up skill their current workforce. The relationship between NYS & NYAN has also been cemented with the agreement for courses being managed through the coaching NY sport website.

Through an NYS representative being part of the network sub groups, it has allowed the network clubs to receive more information on upcoming projects and programmes. NYS & NYAN are working closely to deliver the North Yorkshire Running investment, (explained in more detail on page 6),

which also engages other partners such as Local Authorities and volunteer groups. The NYAN have the infrastructure to provide on-going support, advice and exit routes to newly qualified leaders and groups, whilst NYS can provide the initial support and course provision. Through the network’s existing running groups, resources will be available to the newly qualified leaders to enable them to develop their groups, which will add value to the support given by NYS.

The NYAN have four ‘Run England’ groups taking place currently, with ‘3-2-1’ routes sited in Rowntree’s park, York, and another being developed between Thirsk and Richmond. Currently each group has between 15 and 20 runners, with numbers increasing. A new running club has also launched in Knaresborough linking to the network with between 20 and 30 new members.

Over the last 12 months NYAN have had 64 different athletics coaches attend at least one Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunity, across 11 different athletics clubs. That is 64% of the coaches engaged within the network. The current workforce of coaches signed

onto Coaching NYSport consists of 23 experienced coaches, 39 fully qualified and 30 coaches requiring training.

Over the last 14 months the network has organised numerous CPD workshops as well as the North Yorkshire sports hall athletics team trials, where over 100 children took part in trials to represent the county at the regional competition. NYS have supported the network in getting venues at low cost, if not free of charge, and have enabled the network to liaise and access different venues, which would not have been used before.

NYAN have invested over £23,500 in athletics across the region over the last 12 months, to maximise this investment the partnership with NYS has enabled the finance to be distributed further through cost efficient project management. The network will invest a further £28,240 in athletics clubs and coaches over the next 12 months.

Adult regular (3 x 30 minutes per week) participation in Sport and Physical Activity, as measured by the Sport England Active People Survey has levelled out over the past two years and despite gains last year is now at the same level as baseline figure established at the end of 2006. A number of Local Authority areas have seen an increase with others showing a slight decrease.

North Yorkshire LEA AreaActive People 1 23.1%Active People 6 23.3%

City of York LEA AreaActive People 1 24.9%Active People 6 25.1%

Figures supplied by Sport England based on Local Area Agreement areas.

Participation in sport and physical activity has also been boosted this year with 450 people aged 14 to 25 years regularly attending six-eight week tasters in a range of sports as part of the Sportivate programme.

Running Investment Project Sport England have invested funding into County Sport Partnerships (CSP’s), who will work with Athletics Networks to boost the number of trained running leaders and local running groups across the country. West Yorkshire Sport submitted a bid to Sport England which included North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) and the Humber Sports Partnership as districts six and seven of West Yorkshire. This joint approach made a strong bid and secured the funding.

Working with the North Yorkshire Athletics Network we have to deliver on the following targets:

KPI 1 Number of active new weekly runners 600

KPI 2 Number of running leaders trained and deployed 60

KPI 3 Number of new active running groups established 60

Four Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) courses are being planned up until the end of 2012, the first being in York in March and the last in Northallerton in October.

National Governing Body (NGB) and Club EngagementNYS has supported National Governing Bodies (NGBs) in the development of sport specific strategies using Market Segmentation. Recent examples include work with Bowls England, England Golf and the Amateur Swimming Association aimed at increasing participation in North Yorkshire.

In addition to this, North Yorkshire data sheets have been created to simplify access to key information around population, market segmentation, facilities, participation and demand for sports. The datasheets have been designed to provide a simple summary insight into each of the districts within the county, in order to further facilitate NGB engagement within North Yorkshire.

As part of North Yorkshire Sport’s brand new ‘Support for Clubs’ initiative, data support has so far been provided to two North Yorkshire clubs. A full Market Segmentation analysis has equipped the nominated clubs with a deeper understanding of their key markets and how they could be targeted to increase participation.

Playground 2 Podium (P2P) is the development of a framework and key interventions to identify and develop the ability of disabled players and athletes.

The Framework aims to develop structured pathways in disability sport from schools to community clubs and onto performance environments. The Youth Sports Trust (YST) is leading on the education element of the framework through School Sports Partnerships (SSP), specialist schools and Higher and Further Education. Sport England is responsible for the County Athlete Assessment and Development Centres, development of the community element of the framework including voluntary community clubs and adult identification through health related networks.

Linking into this framework are the player performance pathways from National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs), providing performance environments and high quality coaching for identified talented participants to enter County, Regional and National squads through the National Competition Framework which is delivered in conjunction with UK Sport.

P2P is a dedicated initiative and the focus sports chosen specifically for the project are: Football, Swimming, Athletics, Table Tennis, Boccia and Wheelchair Basketball. These are all Paralympic sports and have been identified through consultation with NGBs relating to their ability to deliver against the framework.

The NYS Building Capacity Officer - Disability has informed the key partners of the P2P aims, objectives and requirements as well as county specific and national developments of the initiative.

The officer has acted as the county coordinator for the three key development areas of the initiative, including:

• Informing, advisingandassistingtheSSPstoidentifypotentially talented disabled athletes within their partnerships including teacher CPD, MyLogBook processes and talent ID days (SSP ID days).

• ManagingtheannualCountyAthleteAssessmentDay where the NGBs do sport specific identification sessions.

How successful we were in achieving our aims and objectives

The P2P initiative has been running for two years in the county. Quantitative data includes:

• SSPstaffhavingdoneCPD:20

• Childreninvolvedinthe10SSPIDdays:231

• Childreninvolvedatthe2CAAD’s:76

Two wheelchair basketball clubs have been developed in line with the NGBs Whole Sport Plan, as an outlet for athletes identified at the CAAD as showing potential in the sport.

Success Factors, Impact, and Lessons Learned

Having a single point of contact for the Country’s P2P queries and to coordinate the delivery of the initiative has proven beneficial.

Having a County Disability Sport Forum to advise, guide and implement elements of the initiative has been effective.

Case Study Prior to the first year delivery of the Playground to

Podium (P2P) initiative there were no wheelchair basketball clubs in the county. Therefore, to enable identified athletes from the initiative to continue participating in the sport, to fulfil County Sport Partnerships (CSP) Core Specifications and to assist Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association (GBWBA) fulfil their Whole Sport Plan priorities North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) has facilitated the development of two new clubs.

In GBWBA’s WSP, support and funding to develop a club in the York area (financial year 2010/11) and Scarborough area (financial year 2011/12) was identified. NYS identified interested parties wanting to develop wheelchair sport in their respective areas. Key partners include representatives from: Local Authority Sports Development teams; local mainstream basketball and rugby league clubs; HE/FE and University links; local voluntary and community organisations.

Using the NYS networks enabled appropriate people to be recruited to the varying positions within the newly formed clubs.

Two development models have been adopted. In York the mainstream basketball club developed a wheelchair section. In Scarborough the mainstream basketball and rugby league clubs have joined together to form an umbrella constituted wheelchair sport club.

SportsAidSportsAid has supported 23 of North Yorkshire’s top emerging athletes distributing £18,000 in funding. This represents 11% of the total number of athletes supported across Yorkshire with these athletes receiving a 12% share of the overall funding distributed.

In the last year, SportsAid’s research suggests that athletes’ expenditure has increased by 15% making SportsAid’s support even more important. On average a SportsAid athlete will train for 15 hours a week, travel 650 miles a month and spend over £6,000 a year on their sport.

In North Yorkshire, SportsAid supported athletes competing in 16 different sports, which showcases the breadth of talent within the area.

Improve Health Through SportNorth Yorkshire Sport (NYS) have continued to try to influence levels of physical activity across North Yorkshire as a pre cursor to people becoming more engaged in sporting activity.

NYS have produced lunch time activity packs to support employees to do more during their working day which has proved popular with Hambleton District Council, Richmondshire District Council, Ryedale District Council and Harrogate Borough Council.

Active Age is a pilot partnership project between North Yorkshire Sport and Age UK North Yorkshire. The project was set up to provide opportunities for people over the age of 55 living in Starbeck to get more physically active.

The project was funded through NYS Physical Activity budget and paid for the venue hire and instructors. Participants were charged £3 per week or £12 for the full six week block.

The project was held at St Aelreds Church in Harrogate. Flyers were posted through the doors of targeted estates within a one mile radius of the venue. The project targeted two of the segments laid out by Sport England; these are Roger & Joy and Ralph & Phyllis.

Global Corporate Challenge North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) formed a partnership with the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) for 2011 which ran from 16th May – 6th September. The partnership enabled any North Yorkshire Business signing up for the GCC to be put in contact with NYS - Physical Activity Officer and be offered advice and support on how to get the most out of participation including a programme of activity and signposting to local clubs and networks. This encouraged participants to sustain the increased activity levels post September.

The GCC is the world’s largest workplace health programme. Employees form teams of seven and compete with businesses all over the world in a 16 week challenge. During this time participants wear a pedometer and record their daily steps online.

North Yorkshire Sport (two teams), York Hospital (50 teams) and Scarborough Hospital (20 teams) all took part in the challenge. Working with City of York Council a 16 week programme of activity was established for York Hospital staff.

Scarborough Hospital although late to sign up to the challenge came first out of all the NHS trusts in the Country.

North Yorkshire Physical Activity ForumThe North Yorkshire Physical Activity Forum is now in its third year. With meetings taking place every quarter. Membership of the group has recently reduced due to restructures. However, all Local Authorities, NHS NY&Y, Disability, British Cycling and Amateur Swimming Association are still active members. A representative from Age UK will be attending future meetings. Terms of reference were reviewed and amended in summer 2011.

Create A Sustainable Infrastructure For SportSport Makers Sport Makers is a National 2012 Olympic legacy Sports Volunteering Programme through which North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) are looking to engage new volunteers aged 16 and over in sport over a two year period. The programme is Government funded and the aim is to recruit, train and deploy individuals into sporting opportunities/ encourage people to set up their own activities to get individuals 16 years and over involved playing sport.

Strong links have been made with Local Authorities, National Governing Bodies and Volunteer Centres as part of the programme to develop an extensive menu of sports volunteering opportunities and to match and support Sport Makers into high quality placements.

Since the launch of the programme last October, NYS has been running a number of inspirational Sport Makers workshops across the region. The workshops are based around the Olympic values with the main aim to inspire individuals to get

involved in volunteering, offering them a wide range of oportunities and support to guide them through their journey.

NYS have successfully engaged with 190 individuals who have attended a Sport Maker workshop since the Launch of the National programme October 2011.

Out of these 190 individuals, 70 have journalled community volunteering hours as part of the process.

NYS also utilised over 100 leaders in the 2011 School Games Level 3 events.

The vision is to continue increasing and sustaining sports participation long after the 2012 Games has taken place.

Case Study - Julie Ryan“Having never been taught as a child to swim, Julie decided to face her fears and visit her local pool. With great success she learnt to swim and continued to take up the sport for enjoyment and fun. Through shear determination and confidence at achieving her goal of raising money for charity, last summer Julie successfully completed the channel swim from Dover to France alongside five of her friends.

As a result of her fundraising efforts, Julie received confirmation that she had been selected to carry the Olympic torch in June on the York – Carlisle leg which left her feeling immensely proud and excited to be part of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Julie attended one of the first Sport Maker workshops that were held in North Yorkshire and following this she wanted to share her knowledge and enthusiasm by helping others to start to enjoy the sport.

In November 2011, Julie managed to get 22 people to swim a mile in a local pool in York as part of the Aspire Channel Swim challenge. This challenge bought together friends and colleagues who have never attempted to swim such a distance.

Through becoming a Sport Maker and leading others, this has further encouraged individuals to get involved and Julie now holds a regular training session in York.

The group’s plans include swimming the Swimathon in April, attempting a Triathlon in May and the Loch Ness Monster swim in August.”

Coaching The North Yorkshire Sport (NYS)Coaching Vision is ‘to improve the quantity and quality of coaching across North Yorkshire, leading to increased support to both individuals and clubs’. The key objectives within this vision are to increase the number of coaches, improve the support to coaches, provide better development opportunities for coaches and maintain and manage a North Yorkshire database of coaches. The outcomes of this will lead to higher standards of coaching, more coaches and coaching available, more information on coaching and ultimately more people playing sport.

In order to achieve this NYS has an online coaching system, ‘CoachingNYSport’, that can support coaches, in either a paid or voluntary capacity, with coaching development opportunities, courses/workshops, job/volunteer opportunities and information regarding bursary and funding. Since its launch 18 months ago, CoachingNYSport now has over 1400 registered members and is fast becoming the ‘one stop shop’ for coaching needs across North Yorkshire.

In 2011/12 CoachingNYSport managed the delivery of over 70 coaching workshops that were attended by some 850 coaches.

Along with this, the NYS Coaching Development Manager continues to lead the North Yorkshire Coaching Development Group that delivers the North Yorkshire Coaching Delivery Plan. Targeted ‘impact based’ activities will take place throughout the coming year such as delivering bespoke coach education programmes, introducing two new scUK accredited workshops (‘1st Steps into Coaching’ and ‘Supporting Coaches’), delivering Talent Coach Breakfasts and supporting the very different coaching journeys of various individuals and small groups of coaches across North Yorkshire.

Case Study The 2011/12 challenge was to roll out

delivery of Sports Coach UK (scUK) accredited workshops to coaches & clubs from across North Yorkshire with locally based tutors whose qualifications were funded by NYS. Of the seven tutors that attended orientation for the scUK Safeguarding & Protecting Children (SPC) workshop, four are now fully signed off to deliver the workshop and the other three are at various stages of receiving sign off’. Two further tutors have now been added to the workforce, enabling the complete suite of scUK workshops to be delivered (workshops such as Safeguarding & Protecting Children, Equity in your Coaching, Analysing your Coaching and A Guide to Mentoring Sports Coaches). All nine tutors are receiving training opportunities and ‘orientation’ events are planned for other workshops that will enable even more localised delivery of wider range of workshops.

Local Authorities across North Yorkshire now have the ability to deliver various scUK accredited

coaching workshops at significantly reduced costs and with much more flexibility around timescales (lead

coaching workshops at significantly reduced costs and with much more flexibility around timescales (lead time is now days rather than weeks) and venues.

Throughout 2011/12, 19 SPC workshops have been delivered to well over 300 coaches/volunteers across North Yorkshire. The cost to individual has averaged out at under £18 per person. Based on a national average price per person of £30 this has meant that almost £4000 has been saved and thus been available for further coach development.

Matt Hewison, Sports Development Officer from Scarborough Council‘Our involvement in the North Yorkshire coaching taskforce has been beneficial on many levels. From a personal point a view the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification and to be able to deliver courses has been a fantastic Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunity for me. The benefit to the local community sports clubs has come with that we can now offer more volume of courses and have been able to provide the courses at a heavily subsidised rate to the end user. Another positive element has been the administration aspect of the courses, I now feel we are in control of what we do, we don’t have to plan courses so far ahead, resources are delivered directly to us at an express rate and we have more ownership of the programme’.

Matt went on to add: ‘The impact to the club and coach has been huge. To use an example - no coaches/volunteers now have travel out of the district of Scarborough and each place on a Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC) workshop in this area only costs £15 per person. A huge saving both in terms of travel and workshop cost. One of our main beneficiaries has been Richardson’s Cycling Club, 12 of their coaches attended one of the SPC courses and this provided them with the relevant qualification to enhance their Go Ride participation scheme within local schools and the community’.

Developed the Coaching and Volunteering WorkforceNorth Yorkshire Sport (NYS) assisted three Districts to deliver:

Two Sports Coach UK (scUK) Inclusive Coaching – Disability courses attended by 35 coaches, one scUK How to Coach Disabled People in Sport course attended by ten coaches, one Boccia England Young Leaders Award attended by attended by 20 Young leaders and one GBWBA Young Leaders Award with a further 20 Young Leaders in attendance.

To support coaches across North Yorkshire we have continued to utilise our website www.coachingnysport.co.uk which provides a wealth of targeted information to over 1,400 registered coaches, all of whom are actively involved in coaching sport in North Yorkshire. The website has enabled us to deliver over 60 coaching development workshops with 880 attendees.

We have supported the training of seven scUK tutors, providing free tutor training to some of the talented staff of our partners, including Local Authorities , to enable North Yorkshire coaches, volunteers and leaders to receive value for money workshops in workshops such as Safeguarding & Protecting Children, Equity in your Coaching, Analysing your Coaching and A Guide to Mentoring Sports Coaches.

New Opportunities And Business DevelopmentAs well as being part of the national School Games pilot, North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) have also piloted our own initiatives including an Active Age project aimed at delivering targeted physical activity sessions over six weeks to people aged 50+. The initial pilot in November and December 2011 saw six sessions involving 37 attendances across six different activities. In the coming year NYS will be looking for partners interested in developing this programme.

For the first time, NYS entered in to a consortium bid with West Yorkshire Sport and The Humber Sports Partnership to deliver on a contract to develop Run Leaders in the coming year. This will see the development of 60 new Run Leaders, 60 new running groups and 600 new regular runners.

Impact Report 2011-2012 16

North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) plays a significant role in data intelligence gathering for and with partners. This ensures that investment of resources is appropriately targeted. Examples of this work include significant support to the Amateur Swimming Association:

Market SegmentationA market segmentation workshop was delivered in June 2011 by NYS and the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). Each Local Authority area attended and was accompanied by a member of their Sports Development team. They were all provided with a toolkit with full breakdown of segments for their specific area. The groups were given 1-2-1 help and advice on how to use this data to drill down into local demographics of their communities. The ‘latent demand’ and marketing information to target groups was extremely useful to the Local Authority members.

Learn to SwimAt Craven Pool in Skipton the ASA CPD workshop was delivered by Sally Skipper who is the ASA National Learn to Swim Officer. This was followed by five bite sized sessions that attracted 20 candidates from across North Yorkshire.

Workforce ASA North East region funded a breakdown of the ASA workforce audit for North Yorkshire and Skyblue Research consultants presented findings at this meeting. No other CSP area have had this done so nationally NYS

and ASA North East are setting standards in workforce audits and are now directly learning from this data.

The report is now being used to drive CPD across North Yorkshire.

DisabilityThe Regional Disability Officer Chris Armstrong delivered a full session on the pathways and support offered to talented swimmers and the importance of Local Authorities playing their part in identifying and nurturing swimmers. Chris has been supported fully by Simon Pierce Building Capacity Officer - Disability for NYS and leads on Playground 2 Podium.

Marketing Essentials GB sport has delivered a Marketing Essentials workshop which North Yorkshire Aquatics Forum (NYAF) members had specifically asked for. 20 NYAF members from across NY completed this course which took place in March 2012.

Big Splash is a nationwide celebration of swimming with BBC celebrity support. Pools have been asked to sign up as a Big Splash site and receive free marketing resources through ASA. Districts with pools participating in Big Splash were: Harrogate (5 pools), Richmondshire (1 pool), Selby (2 pools) and York (2 pools). The Big Splash Reward cards were also introduced into the Harrogate pools in order to encourage people to swim more often.

The Big Splash Launch at Tadcaster was held on the 20th August 2011 and saw a guest appearance by Trunx – the Big Splash Mascot! £1 Open Day, family fun and adult lessons were run to encourage community attendance.

Kellogg’s Swim Active Funding: In 2011, Richmondshire Leisure Trust (RLT) were successful in securing funding for a project to target the local communities including 50+ swimming and links to the MOD and child services. In addition, another successful bid from round two includes Actionnaires (Action for the Blind) who have set up swimming sessions in Whitby.

Low Cost Adult Lessons: By offering a six week, low cost lesson adults can try getting back to swimming without large expense or giving up 12 weeks of their time. Blocks include; ladies only lessons, learn front crawl and develop front crawl.

Parent And Tots Links With Play Rangers:Links with the sports development team play rangers have supported their Adult and Tot sessions. Creating local Olympic legacy.

Delivered over 30 highly successful sporting events:North Yorkshire School Games was one of nine pilot areas delivering county level school competition in 2011. There were 23 competitions covering 12 sports with over 13,500 participants having represented their schools in District level competitions leading to over 1,200 young people competing for their District at a County level.

The Local Organising Committee for the North Yorkshire School Games has been nominated as a flagship example of how to best implement The School Games at Level 3 by the Youth Sport Trust.

Playground to Podium aimed at identifying talented disabled young athletes with 231 young people involved in ten local talent ID days and 76 young people involved in the two County Assessment Days. The establishment of two Wheelchair sports clubs came about as a direct result of talented athletes being identified through this process.

For the fourth year running we attended the Great Yorkshire Show and provided National Governing Bodies (NGBs) with access to over 800 square feet of space free of charge at a three day event which attracts 350,000 visitors each year. British Canoeing, England Volleyball, English Table Tennis Association, British Orienteering, British Cycling and British Triathlon were amongst some of the NGBs who had well over 5000 visitors try out their sport over the three days.

Local Authority SupportNorth Yorkshire Sport (NYS) has used key data tools to support and enhance the work of funding Local Authorities in North Yorkshire. Active People and Market Segmentation analysis have been completed to support facility reviews, facility planning and sports strategies with recent examples of projects taking place in Scarborough, Ryedale and Harrogate.

NYS has also delivered training to Local Authority sport development teams to ensure that colleagues were able to access and utilise the latest data tools. This has strengthened the network of data knowledge and support available to sports clubs and facilities across the county.

Impact: In 2011/12, North Yorkshire Sport provided data intelligence to support the planning processes of NGBs and clubs including:

• Twocounty-widesportsstrategies

• Onedistrictsportstrategy

• DedicateddatasupportfortwoNorthYorkshireClubs

• Creationofeightdistrictleveldatasheetsfor46NGBs

• Regularsupportwithdatarequestsandenquiries

Use of New Data Tools: G.I.S MappingNYS has the capability to produce G.I.S mapping in-house, allowing data to be displayed and analysed geographically. The production of bespoke mapping has enhanced the presentation and understanding of sports data, transforming numbers and text into meaningful visual representations.

Example:MappingChange4LifeClub:In 2011/12, G.I.S mapping has been used to plot the locations of Change 4 Life school clubs and Local Authority sports clubs in North Yorkshire, to help analyse where school club links may be ineffective. The use of geographical mapping was particularly useful for this task, as it allowed visual placement of school clubs in relation to their community club exit routes.

North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) will continue to work with new and existingpartnerstodeliver the four Sporting Ambitions for the region and a legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games

National Governing Body (NGB)support:Much of the work of the Partnership is aimed at supporting NGBs to deliver their national programmes at a local level and we work closely with them to share the participation targets. In particular this year we will be developing a strategy for Outdoor and Adventurous Sports such as Orienteering, Canoeing etc ready to launch a North Yorkshire wide strategy in April 2013.

This will enable the county to be best placed to exploit its natural environment to increase participation.

We will continue to work closely with SportsAid to ensure that as many talented athletes coming from North Yorkshire as possible benefit from the funding available to them as well as helping to sign post NGBs and clubs to localised athlete support funds.

Working with NGBs and clubs we will further develop the capacity within North Yorkshire through coach education and volunteer development. Over 20 coaches will be ‘tracked’ through the year to chart their development as coaches and asses the impact they have on the quality experience people enjoy in clubs and sessions.

150 plus Young Leaders will be trained in NGB specific skills to assist in the delivery of local sport and the North Yorkshire School Games with a further 20 receiving additional training to become School Games mentors, helping to train the next generation of coaches and young leaders.

Engagement with businesses and other community groups continues to be a priority as does the fostering of stronger

links with the emerging Health and Well Being Boards for North Yorkshire and York.

North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) will work on behalf of National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and other partners to develop these links to ensure that sport and physical activity can play their part in the healthy future of our residents.

In particular we will develop our Business engagement model leading to NYS offering support to businesses to get their staff more active and thus providing a link to those individuals for NGBs.

Free or heavily subsidised accredited leaders courses will be organised and delivered in association with local partners and Run England.

Community Games: A great opportunity to bring communities together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We will help communities to organise a Games in a way that works for them and celebrates the uniqueness of their community. This is from the setting –

activity might take place in a park or inside a community centre – to the time of year and the type of activities run.

Some communities may focus on contests to give the event a competitive element, others may want to focus on giving people the opportunity to try something new, from archery to climbing. Whatever the focus of a Community Games, they will provide an opportunity for everyone in a community to participate.

Above all, the Community Games programme aims to capture the core values of the Olympic and Paralympic movements.

We will support over 30 individual events in this Olympic and Paralympic year across the length and breadth of North Yorkshire.

Run LeadersAs part of a new working relationship between Run England and NYS and the North Yorkshire Athletics Network, this year we will train 60 individuals to become run leaders who in turn will establish 60 new running groups leading to at least 600 new people running regularly.

Business EngagementA bespoke package of support to businesses who want to get their employees more active will be developed following on the back of our commercial research project and we hope to see over 20 businesses attending an information breakfast we will host in the Autumn of 2012.

SportMakers:Another programme entering its second year, Sportmakers will continue to develop adult volunteers in sport towards our target of getting 626 people doing at least ten hours of volunteering in a variety of roles in sport, from coaches and officials to tea makers and marketing gurus.

Each SportMaker will attend an inspirational workshop and will be provided with support and guidance to help make a real difference to the sporting community of North Yorkshire.

Sponsorship:Having agreed a sponsorship deal with York St John University (YSJ) at the end of the financial year, links between NYS and the University will become even stronger.

As part of our commitment to joint working NYS will provide placement opportunities for YSJ students who will carry out research in to a range of topics linked to the North Yorkshire Sporting Ambitions.

YSJ will continue to have a strong branding presence at the School Games and offer support to that event as well as joining us for events such as the Community Games and the Great Yorkshire show.

Further joint working projects are also being developed!
