2013 has been an exciting year for the George Mason Univer-sity community. Under the leadership of our new president, Ángel Cabrera, we developed a new university vision that included a new and memo-rable mission, a set of core

institutional values, the signature characteristics of the Mason Graduate, and significant commitments that set the trajectory of the university for the next decade. As the chair of the steering committee for the new university vision, I had the opportunity to work with more than 4,000 members of the Mason family to capture the story of our great university in a meaningful way and describe how we will build on our strengths to be a university for the world.

During the summer, we kicked off a strategic planning process at the School of Management that engaged faculty, staff, students, alumni, board members, and community leaders. It has been a privilege to serve as the acting dean

of the school at this critical time in its history as we come together to define the roadmap to sustainable success for many years to come.

I am delighted to share this publication, which captures many of the ways in which your contributions are critical to the School of Management’s success. Thanks to supporters like you, the School of Management is a place where we can continue to change the world, one person at a time.

As we look forward to 2014, I am hopeful that you will con-tinue to support us so we may continue to strengthen our academic programs, broaden our student services, expand our Centers of Excellence, attract and retain high-achieving faculty and staff, and transform students into well-rounded business professionals.

Faculty Enrichment and Research Funding contributions drive the innovative research and inspired teaching that

are integral components of a relevant curriculum in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape.

Academic Excellence and Programmatic Support gifts serve to sustain and expand student programming as well

as community and global outreach efforts.

Facilities and Technological Support equips us with the tools needed to provide outstanding service to our faculty,

staff, students, alumni, and friends.

In the spring of 2012, keeping with his history of supporting student scholarships at George Mason University, School of Management alum-nus David Roe, BS Accounting ‘89 and MBA ‘96, pledged $112,000 in conjunction with a match-ing gift provided by the School of Management to solidify the Gunston Business Scholars program.

“We are all here for the students,” Roe advocates. “We need to do everything we can to make sure that they leave here with the skills that employers want and need. The more we can have students interface with professional business leaders, the better.”

In an effort to bring Roe’s vision to life, the program aims to support and nurture five students each year through mentoring relationships with members of the Dean’s Advisory Council and special invitations to School of Management events where the scholars have the ability to exercise their networking skills with professional men and women.

In the summer of 2012, the inaugural class of Gunston Business Scholars was chosen. Consisting of seniors Matthew Barnhart, David Maier, Mark Mansdoerfer, and Leslie Tope and junior Hannah Landsberger, the group was given the opportunity to meet the Dean’s Advisory Council. Of that experience, Barnhart said, “It was encouraging to see the genuine interest the council took in hearing about our individual journeys and how Mason played a role in our lives.”

Over the course of the past year, Leslie Tope was spon-sored by her mentor Lillian Heizer, president of LCH Consulting Services and member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, to attend The Women’s Center 27th Annual Lead-ership Conference. Participation in the event gave Tope the opportunity to spend meaningful time with Heizer and other senior-level women representing several well-known companies including Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamil-ton, and Northrup Grumman.

Roe is confident that the Gunston Business Scholars program supports a stimulating environment that promotes personal and professional growth amongst students at the School of Management, which will ultimately benefit the school, the university, and the companies that hire Mason graduates for years to come.

Spotlight on our Champions

FACULTYSPOTLIGHTPhillip G. Buchanan Professor of Accounting

Since joining the School of Management faculty in 1981, Buchanan has taught more than 6,000 students—leaving a lasting mark on their collegiate experiences. Having also served as the director of graduate programs in accounting and taxation, and director of the MBA program, Buchanan has impacted countless others during his time at Mason.

Upon announcing his retirement, Buchanan spoke about a growing concern facing accounting programs. A study by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association in 2009 stated that between 500 and 700 accounting faculty per year will retire over the next 10 years, while accounting PhD programs average about 140 graduates per year.

A number of alumni have sought to address this concern in a way that would honor Buchanan’s legacy at Ma-son. They established the Phillip G. Buchanan Faculty Fellowship to help support the accounting program by attracting and retaining world-class accounting faculty to George Mason. STUDENTSPOTLIGHTJavier A. Perez Navarette BS Accounting & Finance

In order to complete his dual degree in accounting and finance and a minor in eco-nomics, Javier Perez Navarette, former captain of Mason’s Men’s Volleyball Team, had to find a way to fund his education after his athletic scholarship terminated with his NCAA eligibility in the spring of 2013.

Perez Navarette learned of the Emerging Business Leader Award, a scholarship awarded to one graduate student and one undergraduate student each year by the School of Management Alumni Chapter, to which he promptly applied.

Perez Navarette was honored with the Emerging Business Leader Award at The Annual Business Alumni Celebra-tion this past October. Perez Navarette is set to graduate in the spring of 2014 at which time he will start full-time as an auditor at PwC, a position granted to him with the help of former accounting adjunct professor, Suzanne Hubbard, an assurance partner at PwC. ALUMNISPOTLIGHTPatricia H. RobertsBS Business Administration ‘77

It was a difficult job market when Patricia Roberts graduated in 1977. The job offers she received were not for the more coveted management training slots she deserved. Mason had provided her with, as she says, “a wonderful edu-cation,” so she looked back to the university for help by consulting her former finance professor, Robert Johnston. Johnston was able to set up an interview

for her at General Reinsurance Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary.

Roberts was promptly hired and dedicated the next 35 years of her career to the company. In 2001, she was named president and chief executive officer of two companies within the Berkshire Hathaway organiza-tion: General Star and Genesis.

Roberts never forgot how she struggled to get there and how Mason and Johnston helped turn things around. In November 2012, upon the announcement of his retirement, Roberts and her husband estab-lished a $500,000 endowed professorship in honor of Johnston, who will retire from the university next year. FRIENDSPOTLIGHTFrank F. IslamCEO, FI Investment Group

Frank F. Islam is a well-known philanthropist whose private foundation sup-ports educational, cultural, and artistic causes worldwide. He participates in a number of non-profit organizations as a board member, including the School of Management’s Dean’s Advisory Council, which he joined in 2012.

Of his involvement on the Dean’s Council, Islam feels, “The administration provides a structured format for re-ceiving our feedback, listens, and takes the action required to turn the Council’s advice into plans, programs, and policies. This stands in stark contrast to other bodies that I serve on where the members are told what is going on and are primarily passive recipients of information rather than collaborators in a creative process.”

In May 2013, Islam delivering the keynote address at the School of Management’s Convocation ceremony. He indicated that he was not only humbled and honored to have been selected to give the convocation address, but left campus that afternoon feeling motivated and inspired by the conversations he had with several grad-uates following the ceremony.
