The Life of Saint Lukethe EvangelistSt. Luke, who is creditedwith recording the life ofChrist through his Gospelof the New Testament, wasalso known as the “gloriousphysician,” and for hisartistic ability. St. Luke wasborn in Antioch, Syria, where he began to commithis l i fe to Christ uponmeeting St. Paul. Prior tothis time, Luke was a well-known physician of his time, praised with his skill inheal ing the aff l ic ted. However, around 50 AD,Luke left his calling behindand joined St. Paul so thattogether they could glorifyChrist.

As a missionary orator, St.Luke was not as skilled asSt. Paul. However, his talentin writing and artistry farsurpassed the skill of manyduring that time. St. Luke ishighly acclaimed for hiscontributions to The NewTestament. The Book of Actsand the Gospel accordingto St. Luke are detailed in

The Philadelphia Ukrainian-American Community will commemorate the 75th Anniversary ofthe Famine-Genocide in Ukraine on Sunday, October 26, 2008, at the Church of theHoly Trinity, 1904 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The Famine-Genocide of the Ukrainian nation occurred as a result of a direct Soviet policyto crush the nationally conscious Ukrainian people, who fervently resisted collectivizationand supported the independence of Ukraine from the Soviet Union. By introducingunrealistically large quotas on grain and other agricultural products, the Soviet Governmentof Joseph Stalin stripped the peasants of their food supply - causing a famine that claimedthe lives of between 7 to 10 million innocent victims. Having officially sealed the borders ofUkraine to prevent any migration or relief efforts, the Soviet government could continue itsbarbarism without criticism from the outside world. Due to the isolation of the Soviet Unionfrom the rest of the world, and the intricate web of lies manufactured by Soviet historians, the memory of this tragedy was suppressed for decades and the evidence concealed insecret Soviet government vaults. It is the duty of all Ukrainian communities to share thistragic page of history with the world and ensure that the catastrophe that befell Ukrainenever happen again.

The program will feature “Akkolada” Chamber Choir, the Youth Choir and CamertoneEnsemble of the Ukrainian Baptist Church, soprano Marta Zalizniak, and violinist SolomiyaIvachiv.

We will be joined by delegations from other ethnic groups, political and religious leaders, dignitaries and diplomats from Ukraine. The event will be recorded and televised onUkrainian National Television UT1.Admission by good will offering.

St. Stephen’s game ofchance!

Bright sunshine and thearoma of pyrohy, holubci, kovbasa and other treatsdrew Ukrainians, AmericanUkrainians and non-Ukrainians to our Churchon Saturday, August 23rd ,2008 for the 1st AnnualUkrainian Fest ival .Throughout the day thefestival featured live music,Ukrainian crafts, Ukrainianfoods and beverages, attractions for children andmuch more. In spite of backpains, bad knees and feet, and arthr i t ic pain, volunteer’s dedicat ionmade the Festival in ourparish the overwhelmingsuccess it was.

Pastor Ivan Turyk called thevery first meeting of thefest ival organiz ingcommittee to order in Mayof 2008. Our mission wasclear. St . StephenUkrainian Catholic Parishwas relat ively new;therefore it was time tomake ourselves more visiblein the neighboringcommunities. By doing so,we would reach out to newmembers, especially thenewly arrived Ukrainianssettling in Ocean County,NJ.

The idea of holding achurch festival was grand, but ventur ing into theunknown was daunting.Fol lowing Fr. Turyk’scourageous lead, we

started playing a game ofchance. How manypyrohy, how many holubci, how much borsch, kovbasaand kapusta should ourdedicated ladies prepare? How much Ukrainian beershould we buy (not that thatwould go to waste)? Howmany vendors do we invite?Do we hold the festivalindoors or out on thegrounds? How aboutentertainment? Should weplan activities for children? How to get the word out?

Our best estimate was thatmaybe 500 to 700 guestswould attend our 1st AnnualChurch Festival. Based onthat assumption, weproceeded with our plans, chose Fr. Turyk and JohnBortnyk as Co-Chairmanand decided not to chargeadmission.

As Saturday, August 23,2008 dawned, it was clearthat Our Lord blessed ourefforts by gracing us withblue topaz skies and goldensunshine. And how theycomplemented the manyblue and yellow decorationsdispersed throughout thegreat green lawns of theparish!

One of the first to arriveon the festival grounds werethe many vendors, beingwelcomed by JessieKaciuba and ZeniaBrozyna. While bothUkrainian and American

(continued from previous page)crafters were setting uptheir wares of great variety, wafting from the largechurch ki tchens werefamil iar and welcomearomas of Ukrainiancuis ine. Above theexcitement, which was nowevident everywhere, weheard Irene Bortnyk kindlycommandeering the troopsin the mess hall. And whata job that was! Kudos tothe army of volunteers whohad been cooking for days.

The “Ukibara” with its manyvarieties of Ukrainian Beer, was ful ly stocked byEugene Brozyna, and wasnow ready to be introducedto our guests by Ostap andHalyna Jakubowycz andPeter Yurkowsky. A fewhours later, one of the firstto step up to the Bara andtaste test Obolon was thegood friend of the parish, former Mayor of TomsRiver, Paul C Brush. Thenew discovery thrilled him,as well as all of our guestsfor whom Ukrainian Beerwas a first.

Luba Bonczek had herhands full setting up abounce machine and washoping some children, ofany age, showed up so thatshe didn’t have to eat allof the ice cream on handand then bounce around byher lonesome.

At 12 o’clock sharp, a liveband “The Fourth Wave”

started playing, and as perour hopes andbemusement, cars startedpulling up to the front gateof the church, manned bythe church trusteeWolodymyr Powzaniuk. Asthe cars kept coming,Gerald Tchir usheredfriends, parishioners andguests alike through averitable collage of colors.Hanging from the entrancefoyer was a huge, stunningUkrainian “vinok” which ledto the gaily festoonedauditorium where OlgaTchir and OksanaPowzaniuk were open forbusiness, selling food ticketsto what very quicklybecame a long line ofhungry revelers.

Beyond our expectations, the church grounds swelledwith neighbors and thosewho traveled quite adistance, pr imari lyUkrainian-Americans, butmostly non-Ukrainians, toappreciate Ukrainianculture, crafts, foods andentertainment. Yes, therewere children bouncing inthe moonwalk. Yes, childrenregistered for the UkrainianSaturday schools at theparish. Yes, the vendorswere happily selling theircrafts. Yes, the food wassel l ing out fast – thekovbasa went first. Yes,people were dancing andyes, our prayers wereanswered. Instead of 500,there were at least 1800

people viewing and beingintroduced to our verylovely Ukrainian church withgleaming cupolas.

A very special thanks to themany tireless volunteerswho baked cakes, hungposters, donated moneyand their time. Withoutthem the 1st Annual ChurchFestival wouldn’t have beensuch a triumphant success. Our game of chance paidoff, proving once again, that nothing ventured, nothing gained.

My husband and I, arefairly new to this parish,

having transferred fromPassaic, NJ. What wefound at St. Stephen’sChurch in Toms River is aparish with caring andwelcoming parishioners trueto their Ukrainian traditionsand faith.

We cordial ly invi teeveryone to next year’sfestival on August 22nd,which is sure to be evenbigger and better and havemore kovbasa!

Laskavo Prosymo!
