Message From Director/CEO of Education

A Message From

DARRIN PIKE CEO/DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

This school development report for the 2012-13 school year outlines your school’s successes and highlights in matters such as student achievement and professional development. The planning and execution of a school development plan is an important process that must be undertaken by the entire school community. A thorough plan lays the foundation for a productive and successful school year and will be beneficial to every member of the school community, most importantly the students of your school. As we move ahead with the development of a new strategic plan for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District I thank our administrators, teaching staff, school councils and school communities for their efforts in developing and implementing the previous plans to ensure student success and achievement. Such collaboration is important to grow together as a school community for the betterment of our education system. I look forward with great enthusiasm to the progress we are going to make as we build upon these school development plans and continue to provide a quality education for every student in our province. Sincerely, Darrin Pike CEO/Director of Education

Message from Principal It is indeed a pleasure for me to once again reflect upon, and highlight the many successes that were achieved at Immaculate Conception during the 2012-13 school year. In September 2011 we began a new cycle in the School Development Model. This report is a result of the ongoing process of reviewing our goals, objectives, and strategies, that we implement each year to improve student achievement. This report will also recognize some challenges that we focus on to improve achievement levels. The results of the Provincial assessments for the past year were phenomenal. Students at both the Grade 3 and 6 levels achieved higher than others in most areas at the District and Province levels. The Grade 3 students outperformed well above the District and Provincial averages throughout the entire assessment, while the Grade 6 students were above in many areas of writing. Also, the Grade 1 and 2 assessments show very positive results and much to celebrate. The Grade 1 students were also above the District and Provincial averages. The Grade 2 results indicate an increase from previous years. To summarize, we have lots to be proud of in our students. As a result of the objectives outlined in our School Development Plan, and the new initiatives we implement each year, we are proud of the positive results in student achievement levels. Immaculate Conception School is very much a community school. We have developed solid partnerships with our parents as demonstrated by the very successful Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Without the input and dedication from the parent volunteers, we would not be able to offer these two valuable programs for our students. Our School Council plays an active role in fundraising for the needed resources to support the School Development Plan. They are a strong voice for our parent community and advocate on behalf of students and parents. Our parents, both inclusively and exclusively of the School Council, have developed a very strong volunteer base for our successful recycling program. Our small school has been recognized as one of the top recycling schools in the Province and has made the top five (5) schools in the Eastern District again this year. During the past year we collected in excess of 205,000 recyclable items. Fantastic everyone! I would like to express a farewell to our Grade 6 students as they move into junior high at Roncalli High School. I am confident you will have memories of Immaculate for such a long time. I encourage you all to be“the best you can be”. I would like to congratulate our Kindergarten students as well for successfully completing their first year. Good Luck in the years to come. Yours in Education, Todd Crane Principal

Message from School Council As a partnering group in the learning environment of Immaculate Conception we are pleased to report a successful school year. Throughout the year the calibration with our school council has enabled us to have a shared role in the success of our school. We are privileged to have a highly skilled, caring and engaged staff that enables our students to succeed in both education and personal growth. Our Volunteer program is very active and allows our school to succeed in delivering many extracurricular activities. The synergies of combining our skilled staff, engaged volunteers and active parents has allowed our students to be provincial leaders in Provincial Assessment scores. Our Volunteer program allows for the delivery of a cost effective and nutritious breakfast and lunch program as well as highly effective fundraising efforts. Last year we completed our annual Christmas sweep, recycling program as well as a cook book fundraising effort. Our fundraising efforts allowed us to purchase classroom equipment, technical equipment, and physical education equipment and provided students with several out of school educational excursions. Our school council believes in our thriving educational environment, we will continue to work with all partners to deliver an enhanced learning environment for all our kids. Our main goal is to continue to collaborate with proper groups to ensure we provide a proper facility for our vibrant and growing student population. It is a privilege and rewarding experience to be part of the Immaculate School Council. I would like to thank all stake holders for your support during this past school year. Michael Moriarity Co-Chair School Council

Overview of School Our School Community Immaculate Conception School is a K-6 school with an enrolment of 128 students. The school is located in the community of Colliers. The school’s catchment area consists of students from the communities of Colliers, Conception Harbour, Avondale, and Brigus Junction. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of our students are bused to school. Immaculate Conception is a single stream school with the exception of Grade 4 where there were two streams. For the 2012-13 school year, the school was allocated 12.05 teaching units which included 1 administrator, 8.0 regular teachers, .25 for Guidance, 2.0 units for Special Education and .60 for Music and Physical Education. In addition to teaching units, the school has a secretary (30 hours/week), janitor (40 hours/week) and student assistant (20 hours/week). Also, we avail of personnel from the Eastern School District for itinerant services (Speech Language, Educational Psychologist, Autism Consultant, and Hearing Impaired Itinerant). Key Highlights/Special Projects Healthy and Active Living With the added allocation of time for a Physical Education teacher, students were exposed to a variety of new and exciting activities as part of our Healthy and Active Living program. In September students and staff participated in the annual Walk to Breakfast. In October we celebrated Healthy Commotions Day where students participated in Smartboard games in the gym and participated in various classroom activities related to healthy living. Grades three to six were also given the opportunity to participate in cross-country running twice a week. For the first time this year, students in grades three to six were involved in the Hershey Track and Field Games. Grade three to six also attended the Harvest Run in Carbonear. Elementary students were involved in Intramural Sports from November-February. Students participated in an outdoor winter activities unit for physical education which included downhill skiing, skating, snowshoeing, outdoor scavenger hunts and curling. Students in Grade Six also learned about outdoor survival skills through topics such as hypothermia, frostbite and how to build snow shelters. During the Winter Carnival, students of Immaculate were taken through a series of activities such as: curling, fencing, dancing, speed stacking, table hockey and scavenger hunts. Play and Learn week was organized by our Physical Education teacher. Parents in Grades Kindergarten to Grade Three were invited to the school to participate in games and activities with their children. These games were based on the Play and Learn initiative, with the main goal of showing parents/guardians that children learn best through play.

The year came to an end with the annual Sports Day at the Techniplex in St. John’s. Overall, many opportunities for students to be healthy and to get active! Music Both Elementary and Primary Choirs combined for a delightful Multi-Cultural Christmas Musical, “December Around the World”. All of the children were celebrating Christmas in different countries in their own language and culture. Students also participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival. Both choirs achieved second place. We were very fortunate to have “Lowmand Sound” come to our school last spring. They held workshops for the students which focused on traditional dances, and different instruments; guitar, accordion, fiddle, and harp. The interest in traditional Newfoundland music was exciting. 21st Century Learning We were very fortunate to receive $14,000 from the Department of Innovation and Business to enable us to purchase new iPads for all classrooms and other technology for the school. The iPads will support teachers and students in many areas of the curriculum. Several teachers were also successful in receiving funding through Memorial University and Hibernia for a STEM project. Both projects will be implemented in the 2013-14 school year. Other Highlights/Events:

- Recycling Program (over 205,000 items collected) - Technology Initiative for iPads - 100th Day of School Celebrations - Student lead Assemblies - Rocks and Rings Curling - Snowshoeing - Math Day - Fieldtrips (Beauty and The Beast, Techniplex) - Grade 5 Salmon Project - Grade 3 Witches Kitchen - Bullying Awareness - Heritage Fair - Ocean’s Day - ICS Student Newsletter

Partnerships The Newfoundland and Labrador Kids Eat Smart Foundation helps our school offer a nutritious breakfast to all of our students. Several local businesses support the school breakfast program financially as well. Our biggest event for the program is Walk To Breakfast which helps support and sustain the program.

Immaculate Conception is supported wholeheartedly by the School Council, parents and the community at large. Parents and other volunteers have been actively involved in all aspects of our school. School field trips, special events, and both Breakfast and Lunch programs are all supported by parents and volunteers. Local agencies such as the fire departments (Colliers, Conception Hr. and Avondale) all contribute to the school in various ways throughout each year. They offer contests for the students during Fire Prevention Week. Communities Against Violence is also active in anti-bullying presentations for the Grades Five and Six.

What do these results tell us?

- Demand Writing has been a strong area for students over the course of 4 years. - During 2012/13, students in Grade 3 have out-performed both the District and Province by significant margins. - A more focused plan for areas needing attention (i.e. fiction and non-fiction reading, and informational text) has been at the

forefront for the past two years. - Implementation of new strategies (eg. Daily 5, flexible groupings, Guided Reading, etc) can be attributed to much success. - A collaborative approach at divisional levels has resulted in a team approach and more reflection among teachers. Teachers

sharing resources and using DI strategies may be reflected here as well. - The focus moving forward will be to expand upon sharing of strategies, collaborative approach, and co-teaching.

- Students continue to strive in Demand Writing. Trends for the 4-year period indicate much higher performance than the District and Province.

- Reading levels indicate a slight decline from District and Province. In addition, there has been a slight decrease from the previous year.

- Reading focus (especially fiction) has been targeted as the concern at Grade 6 level and much emphasis has been concentrated in this area for the last two years and at present.

- Poetic has been slightly below the District and Provincial averages as well, however, it has significantly increased from 2011-12.

- Both poetic and fiction reading have been identified as the areas needing attention. New strategies and resources are presently being incorporated into the curriculum.

What do these results tell us?

- Two areas of concern for Grade 6 Math are communication, and connections and representing from the last Provincial assessment. Since 2011 there has been much emphasis placed on the areas of concern.

- A more concentrated effort has been placed on Mental Math. - Unfortunately, there are no results from 2012-13 to indicate any improvements only at the school level. Provincial assessment

results for 2013-14 will hopefully display positive results.

Internal Assessment Data

- Grade 1 Report Card data clearly identifies the same results as the Provincial Assessment. - Grade 2 data is also consistent with the Provincial Assessment. There are 4-5 students who do not meet the benchmark for

reading, viewing, writing and representing. - The Grade 3 data highlights the equivalent scores as produced by students on the Provincial Assessment. All students scored 4

and above in all strands of Language Arts and 3 and above in Math. - The writing results on the Grade 6 Provincial Assessment indicate 91% of students are at 3 and above. However, the Report

Card data for writing and representing displays 77% of students scoring 3 and above. There is a huge difference in the results for both reporting data.

What do these results tell us?

- The results clearly highlight the consistencies between the sources of data both internally and externally. There exists one inconsistency at the Grade 6 level that may be attributed to several factors.

- The data also supports and directs our professional development as a staff. - The internal data also supports teachers through their strategies, instruction and assessment practices. - As a result of the many consistencies between the two sources of data, it justifies teachers’ best practices and also areas

needing more attention/focus. In summary, the strategies and actions of our School Development Plan will continue to focus on the goals. It should be noted that since there have been many strong areas in student performance; the weaker areas will be a huge part of the Plan whereby strategies are implemented to support teaching practices. In addition, the focal areas will have a direct impact on how assessment will be conducted moving forward. Already, there have been new practices implemented to deal with various forms of assessment. Teachers have been collecting data from various sources and compiling it in assessment binders to be utilized during reporting times and parent meetings. This structure has been working well and has been successful. As we move forward, we are confident that these structures will take on new meaning and be another way to collect and compile data on individual students.
