Kelly further stated that he and Bates in a Chevrolet car cruised inthe neighborhood or the Urschel home on the nights or JUly 18th, 19th, 20th and21st but ~het 1arrett's Pierce Arrow ~utomobile was not there. Kelly says he didnot know it at the time but later learned that Urschel had made ~ SUdden trip toChicago an~ :or this reason the bridge game had not been arranged.

According to Kelly, he and Bates were then confro~ted with the propo-sition of finding 0 new hideoutj that they drove southweat to stratrord, Oklahomato "Old ~n~ Coleman's place, where he had stored a Buick ~utomobile; that they5rrivcd ~t this ?l;ce snortly bero~e d~ylight. ~lly denied that his r,lfe, Kathryn,~.:;,set t~e Cole:na.LpLace but cla1Led that he asked "old ladY" Coleman if they couldkeep Urschel there; that she "cussed~ him out and rerueed to permit 1'\; that theythan transrerred Urachel to the Buick car, put atolen plates on it and left in itror Peradise, Texas.

Kelly further stated that they did not cross the old Red RiTer bridgeat either Gainesville or Denison, Te7.8s, but went into Texas on the new concretebridge acrolls the Red River.

Kelly did not say detinitely how long Bates remained at' the Shennonf~ ~ttar Urschel was brought there, but intimated that Bates remained there onlye s!lorl time and left for the purpose or going North to arrange tor the ransompayment. He said that be understood Bates would go some plac. north of Oklahomato send the ranson: demands in order that it might appear to be a "XI'lnsasCity job"and to throw the authorities oft the track ~B to where Urachel was being held.He se1d he later learned trom Bates that the latter bought a Corona typewriter onwhich to type the ransom letter and he believes Bates typed this letter in theautomobile wbich he was using.
