This 24-story Crowne Plaza Hotel overlooks the Mississippi River in St Paul. It began it’s story in 1966 and has charmed guests ever since. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe recently purchased this property and have hired Graves Hospitality to provide management. Our design team was hired to completely renovate the hotel in order to rebrand it as an Intercontinental Hotel.

Crowne Plaza now has a new mid-century modern feel for the guest rooms, ballrooms and lobby. A new upscale restaurant and bar are featured in the lobby. Introduction of this hotel as a Intercontinental Hotel will occur in September of 2015.

My role in this renovation was as Project Architect & designer. I attended the owner / architect / contractor meetings, designed the spaces througout, designed the restaurant and bar, specified materials throughout the project, and handled the construction administration.

I have been asked numerous times to “color the facade” or to “create color pallet options” for various projects. A former parter once said, “...dare I say, you have the best eye for color in the firm.”

The Cavanagh and Schmidt Townhomes are just two of the buildings that I have had the opportunity to color.

The image shown is a hand drawn sketch of the Old West Publishingbuilding before it was covered up with a new facade. The image was drawn in an effort to show the city how this historic building could return to its roots. It was presented 30”x42” to the mayor of St Paul.

Plato once asked, “What is chair?” He granted more significance to the idea than the object when he asked this. The goal with this project was to reject Plato’s theory of form by way of material research and hands-on building. The material does influence the design and can be more important than the object itself.

This specific project dealt with the phenomenological aspect of sound. The goal was to create an apparatus that would reduce the noise pollution in a restaurant setting. This project began with a breadth of research then moved on to sketches of possible designs. After this I was able to create some noise diagrams showing the way that sound waves would bounce. My final, and tested, design is a piece that would hang in a restaurant setting and absorb noise through the tiny Helmholtz resonator-like slits.

Utilizing one type of engineered lumber, light plywood in this case, I was able to explore new methods of produc-tion to develop joinery.

The objective of this project was to choose a structure with architectural significance, study it, and finally produce wonderfully crafted drawings of the chosen structure. For the perspective drawing, we were to create a drawing that was semi-transparent in which one could view the inside from the outside, much like an x-ray.

I chose the San Giorgio Maggiore because it is an exemplary model of a cathedral built during the Italian Renaissance. This structure is located on the magnificent island of San Giorgio. The architect Andrea Palladio designed this building and began construction in 1566, completeing it around 1610.

When visiting Italy, I experienced the waxing and waning of the water level. Slimy residue from the Venetian water worked its way up the base of all of the buildings. For this reason I chose to show this effect in my perspective drawing. I placed my eye level very low and below the water in order to show the effect that the water has had on the structure over time.
