HANNAFORD STREET SILVER BAND

A B O u T T H E H A N N A f O R D S T R E E T S i LV E R B A N D

In 1983, the Hannaford Street Silver Band was formed by a group of professional musicians with a love of the brass band repertoire and ensemble playing. Since then, the HSSB has been reinvigorating the brass band tradition to critical and popular acclaim and is heard regularly in Toronto and throughout Ontario.

The brass band art form began in the coal fields of England in the 19th century. Workers in mines and factories took up the newly invented fully chromatic brass instruments as a form of recreation. With the industrial revolution, as workers and their families began emigrating, this amateur tradition of heartfelt music-making spread across Europe and eventually to North America. Soon, brass bands began participating in organized competitions and commissioning original concert music. The competitions in particular gave rise to the standardization of instrumentation used today.

The HSSB is the only fully professional ensemble of its kind in Canada. Through its artistic excellence and ongoing advocacy of this art form, the HSSB has had a provincial, national and international impact. Its recordings and commissions are of particular interest to bands in Europe and the annual 3 day Hannaford Festival of Brass at the St. Lawrence Centre is Canada’s largest international brass festival, attracting ensembles from both Canada and the United States. The organization’s YouTube channel and social networking further extend its reach.

An HSSB core value is Music Education and we proudly sponsor the Hannaford Youth Program. Musicians between 8 and 24 years perform in three ensembles: the Hannaford Junior Band, the Hannaford Community Band and the Hannaford Street Youth Band. In 2015/16 over 100 young musicians from across the GTA have enrolled in this dynamic program.

6

The HSSB maintains a vigorous commissioning program that has resulted in new concert works by such composers as Vivian Fung, Christos Hatzis, Malcolm Forsyth, Raymond Luedeke, J. Scott Irvine, Andrew MacDonald, Donald Coakley, John Burge, Roger Bergs, Alex Pauk, Omar Daniel, Charles Cozens, Patrick Cardy, Henry Kucharzyk, Gary Kulesha, Randolph Peters, Jeff Ryan, Scott Good, Larysa Kuzmenko, Kelly Marie Murphy, Derek Holman, Barbara Croall, Erik Ross, Marcus Venables, and Rob Teehan. The commission, Requiem Mass for a Charred Skull by Bramwell Tovey was awarded a 2003 JUNO Award for Best Classical Composition.

The HSSB has twice been awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Arts by the Province of Ontario.

The HSSB is heard regularly across Canada, the United States, the UK and Europe on both private and public radio stations and has the following commercial recordings to its credit:

• Ontario Reflections (ODR 9449) • Brass Links (CBC SMCD 5188)

• Bring On the Brass (MPR 1990) • Connections in Brass (ODR 9335)

• Voices On High (ODR 9324) • The Magic of Christmas (CBC 5192)

• Northern Delights (ODR 9308) • Canadian Impressions (CBC SMCD 5136)

• Heavy Metal (ODR 9319) • A Christmas Flourish (CBC SMCD 5175)

• The Hannaford Street Silver Band (CBC SMCD 5103)

No one person is responsible for the on-going success and development of the Hannaford Street Silver Band. It takes a community of caring individuals to ensure that our mission is fullfilled.

We would like to recognize the following persons, who over the many years have contributed to the Hannaford Street Silver Band in countless ways.

More than 50 years ago Toronto organist and conductor John Sidgwick had a vision of a choral organization with a ‘difference’, and that dream has survived the test of time: today, under Artistic Director Robert Cooper, the Orpheus Choir is one of the most dynamic and pre-eminent choral groups in the country.

The Orpheus Choir has made its mark in the Canadian choral community by championing new and rarely performed choral works and celebrating the ‘Expect Something Different’ experience. It has performed a vast repertoire of sacred and secular music, from the Renaissance to the 21st century, the classic to the experimental. Adding to the richness of the choral art form, it has commissioned new works, including Eric Robertson’s Songs of Remembrance (1985), Imant Raminsh’s Sonnets to Orpheus (1999), Allan Bevan’s No Mortal Business (2011), and most recently Charles Cozens’ Tres Bailes Latinos, which Orpheus premiered in March 2014. Under the direction of Robert Cooper, the choir has introduced Toronto audiences to many fascinating and accessible works from the current generation of leading composers such as Ēriks Ešenvalds, György Orbán, Vytautis Miškinis, René Eespere and Urmas Sisask.

A core value of the Orpheus Choir is to share the gift of music in the community through partnership and collaboration. Over the years, Orpheus has realized this value through collaborations with renowned international artists such as Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger and John Rutter, Ben Heppner, Mary Lou Fallis, Lois Marshall, Alfred Deller and Adrianne Pieczonka; and also with many Toronto groups, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the VIVA! Youth Singers, the Danny Grossman Dance Company, the Talisker Players, and the Hannaford Street Silver Band. Through its Sidgwick Scholarship Program, the choir has played a part in launching the careers of some of the current generation of fine young singers.

Since its creation under John Sidgwick (1964-1970), the Orpheus Choir has been led by a series of prominent choral conductors: James Whicher (1970-1975), Lloyd Bradshaw (1975-1980), John Barnum (1980-1987), Brainerd Blyden-Taylor (1987- 2002), Norman Reintamm (2002-2003), and Robert Cooper (2003-present).

O u R V i S i O NTo celebrate the transformational power of choral music as an agent of social change and a passionate medium of artistic expression.

OuR MiSSiONTo engage and enthrall audiences through the performance of rarely heard and newly created choral music, celebrating the ‘expect something different’ experience.

O u R VA L u E SOrpheus believes…

• That music is a community enterprise, and that it is our role to share our gift of music, and to support and advocate for the role of music in our community, through partnership and collaboration.

• That it is our responsibility to sustain a financially accountable organization to produce and perform at a consistently high level.

• That respect for all is vital to attract the best, develop the best and retain the best.

• That choral music is a transformative art that can alter the life experience.

• That the choral medium is one of integrity that values its art, its audience, its singers and its organization.

• That singing fosters an environment of fun, of joy and of worth.

• That singing is an art of excellence and distinction requiring discipline of the person, the preparation and the performance.
