POTTON WERE VERY GOOD AND SEAN WAS
‘THE FACE OF POTTON’ FOR US, WE WOULD
DEFINITELY BUILD AGAIN.
POTTON WERE EXCELLENT IN INTERPRETING
OUR DRAWINGS, THEY ONLY MADE SOME
SUGGESTIONS AND MINOR ADJUSTMENTS
TO SUIT THE TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION
METHOD. WE FOUND THE WHOLE PROCESS
WITH POTTON – FROM START TO FINISH -
VERY GOOD, EVERYBODY WE HAD CONTACT
WITH WAS FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL.
WE KNEW WE WANTED TO BUILD A TIMBER-
FRAMED HOUSE AND A WORK COLLEAGUE SPOKE
VERY HIGHLY OF POTTON, SO WE DECIDED TO
VISIT THEIR SHOW CENTRE IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE.
WE WERE EXCITED TO DISCOVER THAT
THEY COULD CREATE A TOTALLY BESPOKE,
CONTEMPORARY DESIGN FOR US AND AFTER
THAT THERE WAS NO LOOKING BACK.
THE SERVICE WE RECEIVED FROM POTTON
FROM BOTH THE SALES AND TECHNICAL
SUPPORT SIDES WAS REALLY EXCELLENT, THEY
SUPPORTED US ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE
BUILD, NOTHING WAS TOO MUCH TROUBLE
I LOVE MY GARDEN AND ENJOY WORKING IN IT, SO THIS WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. WHEN THIS
OPPORTUNITY CAME UP, WE DECIDED THAT WE WOULD LIKE THE IDEA OF SELF BUILDING.
SEAN’S INPUT AND EXPERIENCE WAS EXCELLENT, AS WAS THE WHOLE POTTON SERVICE AND

If you ask Michelle and Andrew Earle where they were living during their self build project they will say “…in a mundic block built house we affectionately called ‘The Hovel’.”
FRONT ELEVATION REAR ELEVATION
The couple considered building their own home and began looking at plots of land when they saw an advertisement for a 1/3rd of an acre plot with an existing house.
“We talked to Sean Adams before deciding to go ahead with Potton. We had a number of ideas about the house and developed them with his help and finished up with a design based loosely on Potton’s Heritage range” said Andrew. “Sean was very knowledgeable and supportive throughout”.
Planning permission was granted which allowed the couple to live in the existing house until their new home was complete – providing that it was demolished after. The new house was to be built almost immediately
behind the existing house, so convenient for the couple to self-manage the project.
They worked with local labour wherever they could, a local builder prepared the foundations and carried out most of the building work and a chance meeting with a local carpenter allowed them to complete the second fix carpentry to an extremely high standard.
Andrew also did a lot of work himself, preparing the plumbing and underfloor heating ready for commissioning by a local plumber.
After 16 months of building, the couple moved out of the old existing house and into their new home.

Originally from Wiltshire, Jean Sawyer and her husband Eric had totally renovated their first house and had even self built their four bedroomed, family home in Oxfordshire, back in the Eighties.
FRONT ELEVATION REAR ELEVATION
Some years later, with the self build bug still alive and kicking, the couple decided to approach their neighbour with the view to buying the piece of land adjoining theirs. The land was purchased for £5,000 with an agreement that building would not begin during the lifetime of their neighbour.
Keen to get started on ‘the house next door’ in 2012, the couple started to do their homework. “We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, we planned to downsize, build an energy efficient house that would be better suited to our needs and will hopefully leave some money in the bank for our retirement”.
Eric prepared a detailed drawing for the 140 sq metre house, with traditional exterior and modern interior and passed it to one of Potton’s self build experts.
Their new home includes solar hot water, an air source heat pump which feeds the himself! The couple planned all of the interior design themselves, choosing kitchens and bathrooms and floor and wall tiling

First-time self-builders Dave and Barbara Jenkins wanted to plan ahead for their retirement - inviting Potton to design a totally bespoke new home which would cater for their needs into old age.
FRONT ELEVATION REAR ELEVATION
Finding a plot of land in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty proved difficult but the Jenkins eventually found a bungalow on a secluded 1.25 acres of land, with far-reaching country views. They made enquiries at the planning office regarding replacing the bungalow with a new house and they purchased the property in 2013.
Dave and Barbara met with Potton’s Sean Adams to discuss their needs, which involved planning ahead so that the couple could continue living there well into old age.
A self-contained ground floor annex, with its own
kitchen/lounge, bedroom and ensuite has been located to one end of the ground floor, which may be used by visitors and would also accommodate future disability. “We wanted this house to see us out” says Barbara. “Everything we need is on the ground floor, with easy wheelchair access, and there’s also enough room for a live-in carer.”
Designing and building their own home meant that Dave and Barbara could include personal details which make all the difference. “It’s the planning stage which is so important, to avoid making alterations later” says Barbara.

Having lived in the village all her life, Hanne Foyle and her husband Mike brought the cottage in which her father used to maintain the gardens for the previous owner.
The house had laid empty for 5 years and needed a lot of work doing to it and was brought by the couple on the condition of planning being granted to knock down the old cottage and build a new one.
The outline planning went through with only 1 amendment, which meant that the roof pitch would have to be reduced slightly in order to resemble the old house.
After being recommended to investigate Potton, the couple visited The National Self Build & Renovation Centre and met with the Potton expert to discuss their needs and requirements.
“Our main requirement was to have a big kitchen, dining area as we like to have people round and liked the idea of keeping everyone together in one room. Upstairs we wanted to have a guest room and one for each of our boys.”
“We got on really well with the Potton expert, he offered advice and helped us achieve extra light on the landing area by adding a roof light. This has since proved to be a big advantage in what could have been a very dark area, light is so important to us!”
The project started with the demolition of the old cottage in May 2013 and the family moved in to a completed home during April 2014.

When good friends of Nikki Scrivens purchased an extra piece of land adjacent to their property in a village just outside of Cambridge, they never envisaged that some years afterwards their good friend would build a house on that piece of land and become a neighbour.
FRONT ELEVATION REAR ELEVATION
Through word of mouth and local knowledge Nikki got to learn about Potton and liked the designs and the package they offered so the project was in motion.
The planning application for the site was made in July 2013 and was finally granted in May 2014.
The key requirements were that the main ground floor should be as open plan as possible but have a separate
lounge with an Inglenook fireplace, she worked from the basic Potton Haslingfield design and came up with a tailored design that would suit her lifestyle.
Nikki then had to decide which build route to take and obviously having no experience in building chose to use one of Potton’s project managers to oversee the project up to a watertight level.

Maureen and Dennis Stephens were living in what could only be described as a ‘chocolate box’ country cottage with a thatched roof and timber cladding, in a perfect village location in Hampshire, close to the river Teste.
“However” said Dennis “we had lived there for 14 years and as much we loved it, we found there was always work that need to be done to keep it up to standard. We wanted something new, with high levels of insulation and sensible running costs, also something that was a little more contemporary in styling, both externally and internally, but most importantly we wanted to stay in the same village!”
Their main requirement was to have a large open plan kitchen and living area, whilst incorporating some interesting interior features.
The couple took the opportunity to visit the Potton Show Centre in St Neots, the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon, and the couple also made a visit to the Potton factory and attended a self build seminar.
The couple’s next task was to find a builder to work with which in fact turned out to be fairly straight forward. Dennis went to school with one of the areas quality builders who had actually built two beautiful Potton houses in the village, and a number of other Potton homes for clients through the county, so had a wealth of experience.
