PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our 59th Anniversary Dance was extraordinary.
It will be hard to surpass it, however to echo our
theme, 'The Best is Yet to Come', so next year may be
even better. We had people from the South Bay, San
Fernando Valley, Thousand Oaks, as well as the
LA/Santa Monica clubs. Mike Sikorsky, as always
was a joy to dance to. In addition to plus, he called
both an advanced tip and hot hash. I personally find
dancing hot hash exhilarating. All the H&S members
present worked on the dance (see Jan's article) and
made it very special.
That week-end was personally very enlivening for
me. On Saturday, I saw Dear Evan Hanson at the
Ahmanson, and it was exceptional. What a beautiful
story of loneliness, not fitting in, feeling like an
outsider, being accepted as a result of telling lies,
becoming truthful and coming into your own. It is a
coming of age story, and much more. Most of all it
talks about feeling like you belong with family and
friends. I particularly love the song, 'You Will Be
Found'. Increasingly I feel that H&S and RR have
truly found each other in a deeper, more caring way.
Ribbons & Souls feels more and more like we belong
together and that our square dance family has become
stronger and more encompassing. I know that with
each passing day I myself am feeling more and more
kinship with the members of RR, as we have
increasingly worked together in such a supportive
way. For me, while it has been and continues to be a
lot of work, at the same time there is a seamlessness
about our merger, for which I am very grateful.
The wonderful cap to our anniversary dance
week-end was a dear friend of mine's 75th Birthday
Party on Sunday. It was such fun to spend this time
with our mutual friends, to meet new people that I had
heard her speak of and to reconnect with people who I
haven't seen from as far back as 30 years ago.
We had our very first General Meeting of Ribbons
& Souls last night, November 27th with 23 present. It
was very exciting with voting on so many important
issues. There is a photo, later on in this newsletter, of
Babs draped in the winning fabric. We voted 3 times,
Bab's did such a wonderful job of selecting a variety
of fabrics. She is going to make many of the samples
into a quilt that people can bid on at the Sweetheart
Ball. Fredi, was completely and delightfully
surprised that she was selected by H & S to be our
next sweetheart. The Sweetheart committee chose to
honor Fredi for all the wonderful work that she did to
help make the merger a reality. Bob Gladwell,
designed the winning badge, using the font and angle
my son came up with. It warms my heart to have
some of my beloved son, Drew, in the R&S badge.
The background will be silver with the writing, soles,
and ribbon all in black, and the backing will be a
magnet. Our H&S choice for sweetheart is pictured
later in the newsletter holding up the winner of the 13
badge choices voted on. Linda Harris, our new vice
president, is the other sweetheart for R&S.
Art conducted the elections and the installation of
our officers. This is an interim board to help continue
the merger during the next 6 months. At our board
meeting in May we will elect the board that will serve
for the entire year. I imagine the next board will look
almost the same as the interim. We will have a more
formal Installation and Dinner, at Tony P's in the
Marina in June. There are a lot of customs that are
different in the two clubs, and we will be looking at
them during the upcoming meetings. One custom that
RR had and R & S will be continuing is that of
Associate Members.
Our first General meeting was thrilling as
everyone present was focused on what is best for our
new club, and letting go of what was. Yes, 'The Best
is Yet to Come'.
I hope that everyone's holidays are full of joy, and
are shared with family and friends. Wishing you all a
wonderful 2019.

CLASS This is our last Class Clips. We (Nancy and Jerry) became Class Coordinators with the class of
September 2000. Our last class is the current one - September 2018. Starting with the next class -
January 2019 - Shan will take over the job.
It's been a marvelous journey. Many, if not most, of you learned to dance in our class. We watched you
progress with pride, sometimes feeling the way parents do when their toddler takes its first step.
We wish Shan the best of luck.......

KITCHEN REPORT
Abundant choices were provided and served by Nancy Tu and John Rockwood for our "Thankful Hearts" dance
on November 16: A bowl of fresh cut fruit and grapes, mini cupcakes and maple cookies, cheese and crackers, plus
a special treat of See's Chocolates.
THANK YOU, NANCY

LEGACY LUNCHEON
The City of Los Angeles Parks Foundation put on their annual Legacy Luncheon to honor seniors age 90
and over on November 8. Evelyn Maggiore recruited
eligible square dancers, including Kipp Bitting, Charlie
Longobart and me, Ruth Michaelson. As you probably
know, Evelyn could not attend due to a medical issue, so
I'm sending this report for her.
Busses were provided from senior centers throughout the city
to Friendship Auditorium on Riverside Drive. Charlie's good
friend, Jackie Armistead, volunteered to drive and invited me
to join them, an option I was happy with! The headcount was
about 350, and we were seated at long tables in the huge
dining room which was gaily decorated in a circus theme,
live music, and even a little dancing in the aisles. Turkey
with all the trimmings was served, plus apple pie and ice
cream for dessert. Additionally, there were many door prizes
with a large TV set as the main prize. Unfortunately, none of
us won.
A full color, glossy souvenir program was distributed to all, plus each honoree in attendance received a goodie
bag. A good remembrance of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

ASSOCIATED SQUARE DANCERS
At the A Square D General Meeting, we discussed a number of items.
INSURANCE Our club’s membership in A Square D gives us the chance to buy group insurance. When dues
are collected, part of the total goes to pay for insurance. The cost per person this year is $4.60. The payment is
due to the A Square D insurance director on December 14, and covers for January 1 through December 31,
2019. Part of the new member’s dues pays for insurance, and the cost of insurance is the flat fee, not prorated.
There is medical insurance, which is secondary to the insurance(s) that you already have. The insurance
company will not cover a dancer for injury unless they are wearing closed-toe, not stiletto, shoes or shoes which
are made specifically for square dancing. Liability insurance is also included, which the hall requires of us in
order to dance there.
The treasurer keeps blank forms to fill out at the time of an injury. If you get injured at a class or dance or other
club event, you should fill out one of these forms at the time. It does not obligate you to use this insurance, but
sets you up to do so if you decide later that you want to.
Payment for insurance is made for all the club members. Club class members are automatically covered,
without an insurance payment. Names of club and class members are sent to the A Square D insurance director.
Everyone needs to sign in at classes and dances, whether we are dancing or not, to prove that we were at the
dance, for insurance purposes. Sign your name, don’t print, and don’t have someone else sign for you. Dancing
at other A Square D clubs is covered. Dancing at a visitation is covered. Dancing at non-A Square D clubs or
dances, such as at the State or National Convention, is covered if the club specifies that this dance is a
visitation. We are covered at club events, such as at fund-raisers, if we sign a list to show that we were there.
Visitations and club events are made official by announcing them in the Newsletter or in the board meeting
minutes, and copies of these documents are routinely sent to the insurance director at A Square D and filed
away. Sign-in sheets are kept for 3 years.
Whew! All these details keep our treasurer and the A Square D insurance director busy.
HIGH FLIERS Every year an A Square D group called the High Fliers puts on a sight-seeing trip right before
the National Convention in the city of the Convention. Thirty people have already joined for next year’s
Convention and the group is full. HOWEVER, if you are interested in joining them, contact Pam Bailis to be
on the waiting list. There may be dropouts.
PRESIDENTIAL BALL/ANNIVERSARY DANCE There are five large dances put on by A Square D each
year. Two dances are put on by all of A Square D: the Sweetheart Ball in February and the Presidential Ball/A
Square D Anniversary Dance in October. The three A Square D districts each put on a student dance:
Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara puts on the Student Stomp in January, Orange County puts on the Leprechaun
Ball in March, and the South Bay/Westside puts on the Spring Fling in June. The Sweetheart Ball nets making
money, which is used to fund A Square D activities, such as renting a room for monthly board meetings. The
Presidential Ball/Anniversary Dance is a loss leader.
A Square D is thinking about how best to hold the Presidential Ball/Anniversary Dance and would like input
from member clubs. Here are four options. 1. Not hold this dance. 2. Have this dance be the Anniversary
Dance only, since many clubs honor their presidents at the Sweetheart Ball. 3. Continue the dance as it is, with
both parts and in October. 4. Hold this dance in September. You will be asked for your input at a board
meeting before the next A Square D General Meeting in February.
STUDENT STOMP The A Square D district for the valley, Ventura, and Santa Barbara puts on a dance every
January for students. Since the venue planned for this coming year’s Student Stomp will be closed, they are
looking for a new location. They will know where the dance will be held in a couple of weeks.
SWEETHEART BALL The Sweetheart Ball will be held next February 10. The last 3 years’ Heels & Souls
sweethearts will select one of the new sweethearts, and the Red Ribbons will select the other sweetheart. By the
time of this printing, the sweethearts will have been announced.

59th ANNIVERSARY DANCE
Our 59th Anniversary Dance was a celebration of our club. The hall was decorated in lighted flower
streamers, flowers, balloons and banners. The tables had black tablecloths with a gold spangled runner
down the middle. People came from near and far, including people from 11 other clubs, as well as ours.
104 people attended, 90 dancers and 14 non-dancers. Mike Sikorsky was calling and Zena Beaulieu was
cuing. We had a continuous buffet from 8-9:30pm, with a wide assortment of food, and plenty for all.
A club group picture was taken plus other individual pictures.
Many people made this dance happen. The committee for putting on the dance were Madeline Sprints,
chairperson and decorations, Jane Gold on refreshments, and Jan Bartholomew on finding volunteers to
do jobs at the dance. Everyone helped. Ruth ran the dance. Harvey and his team arranged the tables.
Norma and many other people decorated the hall. Fredi and her team greeted people as they arrived.
Judy and her team took money at the door. Jane, Amelia and Michaelyn were in the kitchen and served
food. Kat’ ran solo signups. Linda took individual pictures. Many people helped to clean up. Thank
you everyone!
This was our last anniversary dance as the Heels & Souls, and next year we will be the Ribbons and
Souls.
It was a wonderful dance!

WE DID IT! WHAT A SUCCESSFUL EVENING!
Thank you to all my committee members. You out did yourselves. Jane you did a fabulous job on the
food choices, and placement. Please thank your sister for her help in getting all the food to the center.
Amelia and Michaelyn we couldn’t have done this event without your help. The tables were replenished
with precision. And always looked lovely.
To my decorating committee! Thank you to Harvey for finding a way to put up the lights behind the
caller and other places. This really helping to make this an evening to remember. To my friend Nikki
who helped me put together the flower arrangements. To Norma, Linda and Phyllis for setting up the
decorations on the tables and stage. Thank you, Martin and John, for getting the tables and chairs out
and putting on table cloths.
To Mike who rolled up his sleeves and helped us with decorating and cleanup.
To Kat’ for running the singles rotation board.
Thank you to Fredi, for being there to hand holding when needed. To Ruth for being that little voice of
reminders.
To Jan, who found club members to do what needed to be done with jobs and cleanup which helped
make this became a smooth-running event.
Thank you, Linda, for taking pictures all evening. We look forward to seeing them.
I especially want to thank club members who donated monetarily and were generous with their time.
We truly went out with a bang!!
