Kevin Hanson received his Associate of Arts from Northern Oklahoma College, and his Bachelor ofArts from Northwestern Oklahoma State University majoring in vocal and instrumental musiceducation. After teaching for several years, he attended the Armed Forces School of Music andsubsequently performed with the United States Army Band for 9 years all over the world. He lastserved as an NCO conductor and Staff Band Arranger for the United States Army Japan Band.

He also studied with and received a Professional Master's Certification in Arranging and Orchestrationfrom Berklee College of Music, and is currently finishing Master's work with Boston University.

Mr. Hanson is the founder and former conductor of the Newark Symphonic Winds; a successful Tri-City Symphonic Wind Ensemble in the San Francisco Bay area. Throughout the years, he has alsoremained active working with various church and community musical groups.

His career in education has spanned three states working in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Californiawhere he built successful and award winning programs. He is currently working for the Department ofDefense schools and teaching in Japan.

About The Composer

This piece is written in memory of 30 years of beginning band students that I have had the pleasureof working with. Each one amazed me in some way.

The shining faces, the moments of choosing their instruments, the first haunting sounds of playing apitch, to seeing them finally being able to play musically is always in my memory.

Many professions now hold their unique talents. Some became doctors, lawyers, scientists,teachers, musicians, band parents and so much more. Some continue to play, others only played fora few years; but, always do they carry the experience of having been a musician.

And they have now taken their rightful places in society as leaders, parents, and even supporters ofmusic. They are among those who illuminate and shine in their communities.
